MGoFish: Next DC Expected to be a "3-4 Guru" and a Slamdunk Hire
Team Harbaugh is apparently giving some recruits information on who the next DC will be, and I suspect we will be very happy with the decision based on these rumblings:
#Michigan expected to hire a "3-4 guru" as their next defensive coordinator https://t.co/7dN9QAtBZW
— Garrett Fishaw (@MGoFish) December 15, 2015
Also, MGoFish is hearing positive things about Bush and Walker. While the dude can be over optimistic at times, his sources seem to be fairly solid.

The majority of the coaches who have been discussed as DC candidates are 3-4 guys.
December 15th, 2015 at 11:18 AM ^
who would it be, irrespective of MGoFish?
December 15th, 2015 at 11:22 AM ^
IMO, things seem to have been pointing toward Lance Anderson. Jim Leavitt doesn't make sense to me, because the hire could have already been made/announced.

but without knowing his family situation, seems like a hard pull to AA (albeit the #1 college town) from Palo Alto. Of course, any hire would likely move on after a couple years.

Trying to run a D he didn't get, he had Texas looking OK when he came in. I don't want him back, but he isn't as bed as he seems from our point of view.

I don't get his comment about Bush and Walker:
Will say more once the decisions are made but lets just say if one or both choose to commit elsewhere, bridges could be more than burnt.
I'm guessing it's just hyperbole, but given the meaning of the idiom, how can a bridge be more than burnt (ie, a relationship damaged beyond repair)?
December 15th, 2015 at 10:09 AM ^
Once the bridges are burned, they pour salt on the bridges so that no other bridges can ever grow in that location again. SCIENCE!
December 15th, 2015 at 10:11 AM ^
I can see the burnt bridges comment pertaining to Bush more than Walker. Just guessing considering the relationship with his dad and the school and taking fliers on his teammates.
December 15th, 2015 at 10:23 AM ^
Satellite camp set up there, taking 2 lighter regarded kids from his dad's HS team, some vague rumors about hiring dad for staff at UM, etc. Could see that for sure.

If it has nothing to do with the family then it's the coach/school and Harbaugh would be out of his mind to burn bridges with DePaul. It's one of the big 6 Parochial powers of North Jersey. If Walker goes elsewhere you let it slide and say maybe next time.

I thought you need a man eating NT to effectively play a 3-4 defense and those guys are rare. Obviously, you need 4 linebackers and isn't that the weak point for us?
December 15th, 2015 at 10:34 AM ^
The linebackers may very well hold the key to whether the 3-4 is situaitonal or base perhaps, but offhand I am fine with the next guy being a 3-4 guru. Durkin ran a one-gap 3-4 which worked well enough when you had Glasgow that could disrupt the line and Ojemudia at the "Buck" / OLB that could come around and swallow guys whole in the backfield. One of the other ways a 3-4 allows some flexibility is that the fourth rusher doesn't need to be one of the OLBs (e.g., a safety or corner blitz), but you still want speed on the outside and I think the board discussed speed and LBs quite a bit later in the regular season.

3-4? NFL? Slamdunk? Obviously Belichick. It all fits.

3-4 guru? We have the LBs to run anything but a 5-1-5?
December 15th, 2015 at 10:39 AM ^
Would be something like this... Taco and Marshall/redshirt from Florida/Kemp at OLB. Gedeon and Furbush/Winovich/McCray/freshman at ILB.
Challenges would be getting Taco and former buck backups comfortable playing in space more than they have.

Is a 6'6 270 lbs a typical 3-4 LB? Taco is a big man. I don't see him playing without his hand in the dirt (artificial rubber pellets).

Woodley is 6'2, 256 aka Carlos Kemp size. That's a different body type than Taco.
December 15th, 2015 at 11:43 AM ^
Julius Peppers is the best comparable. 6'7". 287. Packers pretty successfully transitioned him to OLB from DE. He's a total athletic freak, though, far more than even Taco.

Alabama used Ed Dickson as an outside LB at 6'6" and 250-260 rather effectively. Not typical, but possible.
December 15th, 2015 at 11:02 AM ^
Most teams who run a 50 have one big outside linebacker (like, say, LaMarr Woodley) and one smaller outside linebacker.
