MGoFish: Next DC Expected to be a "3-4 Guru" and a Slamdunk Hire

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Team Harbaugh is apparently giving some recruits information on who the next DC will be, and I suspect we will be very happy with the decision based on these rumblings:

#Michigan expected to hire a "3-4 guru" as their next defensive coordinator https://t.co/7dN9QAtBZW

Also, MGoFish is hearing positive things about Bush and Walker. While the dude can be over optimistic at times, his sources seem to be fairly solid.

I don't get his comment about Bush and Walker:

Will say more once the decisions are made but lets just say if one or both choose to commit elsewhere, bridges could be more than burnt.

I'm guessing it's just hyperbole, but given the meaning of the idiom, how can a bridge be more than burnt (ie, a relationship damaged beyond repair)?

But should Bush really feel indebted to us because we offered two of his teammates and they accepted? (If we'd be disappointed taking them without Bush, should've never offered them IMO.) Or because we worked with his father for a satellite camp that was clearly mutually beneficial? I want him to make the decision to come here because he actually wants to, not feels pressured to.

I thought you need a man eating NT to effectively play a 3-4 defense and those guys are rare. Obviously, you need 4 linebackers and isn't that the weak point for us?

The linebackers may very well hold the key to whether the 3-4 is situaitonal or base perhaps, but offhand I am fine with the next guy being a 3-4 guru. Durkin ran a one-gap 3-4 which worked well enough when you had Glasgow that could disrupt the line and Ojemudia at the "Buck" / OLB that could come around and swallow guys whole in the backfield. One of the other ways a 3-4 allows some flexibility is that the fourth rusher doesn't need to be one of the OLBs (e.g., a safety or corner blitz), but you still want speed on the outside and I think the board discussed speed and LBs quite a bit later in the regular season.

Think of it not as 4 LBs, but 2 OLBs/2 ILBs. OLBs need to provide edge rush, set the edge and be able to play in space a bit more than the buck in the current scheme. ILBs are traditional LBs, ability to blitz a bonus.

Would be something like this... Taco and Marshall/redshirt from Florida/Kemp at OLB. Gedeon and Furbush/Winovich/McCray/freshman at ILB.

Challenges would be getting Taco and former buck backups comfortable playing in space more than they have.

Could be a great fit, Mone/Glasgow at NT. Wormely/Henry would be great 3-4 ends. Then LBs you have Taco as the rush LB. Ben inside then just need to find 2 more. There would be more competition from the young DEs we've recruited who wouldn't need the size with existing LBs.
