MGoBlog is a Joke

Submitted by Cam on October 19th, 2019 at 11:47 PM

Every year since its inception, MGoBlog has failed to function during high-traffic periods.  The only conclusion to draw is that Brian and his employees simply don't give a shit. What do we have to do to fix this? Recruit analysts for a new site? No other business could function like this and stay afloat.

A funny joke, or a not funny joke?

I think "we" can draw conclusions other than Brian doesnt give a shit, but we can draw one conclusion about whether you might be making an angry post after an emotional football game.

If money’s the problem there should be an option to donate for better servers, functionality, etc. Or they should just sell the site (which I would buy for a fair price if Brian sees this) to someone who cares about it.

But considering all the ads and the number of clicks especially on days like this I don’t think money’s of concern.

Edit:

I guess there actually is a place to donate lol. A dollar amount should be listed to donate for upgraded servers. Link below though.

Who is obsessed with the ad revenue? I'm just pointing out that they are running a profitable business, not a charity. The fact that it is "free" does not mean the users can't have expectations about the quality or that the site is underfunded.

I'm not even complaining about how the site handles traffic. I think it is much better than it used to be. I suspect the challenge for them is the enormous variance in traffic from normal days to days like this where there is a huge game and a loss. If you pay for a setup that handles X users and then you get 5X users on some days, you're going to have an issue.

I don't really think Brian runs this site so people can post inflammatory drunken rants after games. He runs this site for the great information he posts everyday during the week.

Brian is probably sitting back telling you to fuck off right now.

It's incredibly hard to stay engaged when, the moment something goes wrong, half the users on this site start screaming "everything is everyone else's fault."

They're taking their frustration out on a BLOG EDITOR, maybe the best one in college football, for the temerity to run a free website that occasionally can't handle the massive number of people taking their frustrations out on a blog editor who runs a free website.

This comment won't be here long. Once the moms catch up with the shitshow this post will disappear. That's a good thing.

Jesus, there are some toxic people here. I've learned to stay away from the game threads in tough games, and the message board seems like the mLive denizens have all found it.

I can't blame Brian for disconnecting. Can't stop the trainwreck, so just get out of the way and clean it up when the fires burn out.

Eh, I left it up to save your comment.

Traffic from people pissed off after the game ends doesn't make us that much money. Ad revenue from the board on weekends is 1% of what we'll get from the high engagement from the game column on Monday and Neck Sharpies on Tuesday. The longform editorial drives the business, and the server bandwidth, which is higher and more expensive than it's ever been, and more than sufficient for a big commitment, isn't worth the expense of going higher just for the postgame rage after one of Michigan's 3 or 4 losses a season. It's already more than any writer takes home from the blog.

Or it could be the editors are more lenient about people trashing us than players or other readers. We're adults, we're capable of handing criticism, and when it's for a conscious decision that bothered a reader, eh, let him say his piece, even if it doesn't change anything. We could put more money into server bandwidth just to handle people who want to shitpost after losses. We chose instead to hire a guy who runs a basketball recruiting service to cover basketball recruiting.

I like the crashes. It kind of reminds me of the old days when the blog struggled multiple times a game.  It makes me feel like something important is happening.

Who cares anyway?  It’s the middle of a football game. Chat with your buddies or text a friend if you need instant feedback from people.

Well, there are 10 cross-site trackers on this page.  Of course, if you were worried about your personal data you would block them.  Instead, you create this thread.  I love irony.

I have a serious question about all the negative posts about every single thing:  how old are you guys?  This place was never this negative before and that includes when hoke imploded.  My theory is that most of the negativity skews young as it seems it’s all the rage to have really strong opinions and call for people’s heads these days rather than have a discussion based in facts.

So lately I've perfected the art of making a hamburger. It's not just an art form, its also a science. One of my go-to methods is to pre cook bacon in a skillet, then pan fry the seasoned patty in the rendered bacon fat. I also carmelize a thick sliced onion and place it under the patty for the complexity of flavors. Top with Munster, bitter lettuce, a thick heirloom tomato slice instead of ketchup, thin sliced raw onion and pickle to cut the fatty goodness, topped with classic yellow mustard and a1. I use potato rolls I make, and sometimes I fry them in anchovy butter before assembling. Heaven in a bite. I try to pace myself, but almost always end up devouring it until it's gone, gasping for breath.

Do you think they're sitting in a hamster wheel running to make the servers work?  I don't think you get how this works (or how much it costs them and doesn't cost you).
