Meta: What brought you here?
Feeling a bit reflective this morning given the long road getting back to this point. Was thinking what a special place this is and wondering how others happened upon it.
I know I started reading during the 2006 season and it's probably why the Eleven Swans post is the one that is permanently seared in my brain as the quintessential MGoBlog post. Don't think I started really posting until a few years after that but I am thankful for this weird little community.
So what brought you around these parts?

Brian "Scoop" Cook breaking the Lloyd Carr retirement news.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:43 AM ^
Right around when I started. My brother linked me to something here. I think it was the news or rumors Rich Rod was the new hire. I don't remember my start date on the board but didn't make an account for like a year.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:52 AM ^
I first heard about mgoblog from overhearing a conversation about how Ryan Mallet shoots lasers out of his eyes while walking into the App State game. When Carr retired, the constant updates was the only thing that made that search somewhat tolerable. Then, Brian did a good job of explaining RR's offense.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:04 AM ^
I started reading during the LC retirement and subsequent coaching search.
Basically I came for the rumors and stayed for the shenanigans that followed...
January 8th, 2024 at 10:25 AM ^
I did the same. Peanut Butter Jelly Time is stuck in my head as a result of that search. Early on, the Wolverine Liberation Army posts kept me interested. It has been a fun ride.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:39 AM ^
During that time, a national publication (NYT?) linked to a story on MGoBlog. I read the story and haven’t stopped reading the Blog ever since.
January 8th, 2024 at 3:26 PM ^
My origin story was the 2005-06 crazy recruitment of Jai Eugene.
Oddly enough, he has a son of the same name who is at Tulane now.
January 8th, 2024 at 11:00 AM ^
Same for me. I had a friend who wrestled at Michigan, so I asked if he had any insider info on the coach search, and he pointed me here. Been reading it ever since.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:43 AM ^
Someone sent me a copy-and-pasted line from a UFR and I had to know where it came from.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:44 AM ^
It was the Michigan Bar Locator. Back in 2010 or so. I attended grad school at Michigan in '07 and '08. I think I was traveling for work and I wanted to watch the game in a Michigan environment and I think I found Duffy's in Chicago from MGoBlog.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:45 AM ^
I joined the Blog to keep up with the coaching search that culminated in Harbaugh. It's now my primary source for all things Michigan football.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:47 AM ^
Joined date checks out.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:41 AM ^
Haha, on the topic of Join Dates checking out... I was one of the original visitors and posters on this site during the Halo Scan days. When it evolved away from that format, I did a self-check-in and recognized that I was spending way too much time on the site and vowed not to create an account.
July 2, 2009 marks about a week or two into my bar exam prep study. The drudgery and rote memorization and the mnemonics (and 90% of the campus being gone by that point in the summer) broke me and I fell off the wagon. The bar exam was conducted at the end of July 2009 and I dutifully spent all of July on this site although didn't post much.
It still gives me a smirk when I notice my Join Date.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:37 AM ^
How'd the bar go?
January 8th, 2024 at 8:45 AM ^
It was exactly when we hired Rich Rod. I was desperate for Michigan content and I stumbled across MGoBlog (I believe in a link from ann arbor news dot com).
I've been here ever since.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:58 AM ^
Wow. Youve been here since Rich Rod. I can only imagine all the things posted here during that era. F's given must have been at an all-time high. lol
January 8th, 2024 at 9:02 AM ^
Honestly the worst part of that era was the factions. It was like 2020.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:12 AM ^
I felt bad for younger kids who had never lived through a time when Michigan Football owned OSU, MSU and was dominant in football.
Those were some pretty tough years. But dang if we weren’t alway fairly optimistic for the next season.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:46 AM ^
Lloyd Carr retirement/Coaching search that resulted in Rich Rod hire.
It took a few years to create an account once they switched over to this platform, but this has always been the best sports blog/website regardless of sport or level on the internet for a long time.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:47 AM ^
It was during the post Carr coaching search for me. Since then, it is usually a daily click for me to see what's new with anything Michigan. Go Blue!
January 8th, 2024 at 8:50 AM ^
brian's great writing.
EDIT: my join date says 15 years 5 months...which would put me into 2009, at the start of the first rodriguez season. i don't think that's correct, fwiw. i absolutely remember being on here well before that, when lloyd was coaching chad henne ("beep, beep, throw to left, robo-qb engaged" type stuff) and mike hart, and the coaching search, and...well, i was definitely here before 2009.
EDIT 2: math is hard. i started in 2008, which was rodriguez' first season. but i was here long before that, anyway.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:58 AM ^
You might be referring to the 2007 MSU game column, and one of my favorite MGoBlog quotes ever: ". . . various servos and hydraulics kicked in. Henne flung a pass into Z45PASCTETERHM's outstretched arms, declared GOAL COMPLETED, and initiated nailcoeds.exe."
January 8th, 2024 at 10:55 AM ^
that's the one!!!
January 8th, 2024 at 10:54 AM ^
Me too, indirectly, due to the writing. I’d pick up the Every Three Weekly when visiting my son at West Quad, and really enjoyed the writing. My son, who saw my M fanaticism first hand his entire childhood, told me that I would like this blog due to the writing and subject matter. Boy, was he correct. I appreciate and love the writing so much, especially Brian’s but Seth is great as well.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:50 AM ^
Heard there was scoop on the forums for who was winning the starting job between Wilton Speight and John O’Korn. Been here ever since. Although all the “scoops” seem to have vanished a few years back.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:51 AM ^
I came here because I was writing long social media posts about Michigan football, and my friends were like, "Hey, that's cool and all, but nobody else really cares that much about Michigan football."
So I had to find like-minded folk.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:51 AM ^
I’m not sure how I got here , just happy I found it ..
January 8th, 2024 at 8:52 AM ^
The coaching search that lead to RichRod brought me here. I lurked for a few years, then started posting sometime during the 2010 season. After his firing I didn't post much again until the 2013 season. Been here an unhealthy amount since then.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:45 AM ^
Same story for me, I came during the RR search, lurked for a while and then finally made an account. It's been quite the ride.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:53 AM ^
I started following in 2006 during the football season after a friend/fellow UM student showed me. I stopped lurking and got an account a few years later. Been my #1 site for years now. Countless thanks to everyone and anyone who has ever contributed to this site.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:53 AM ^
2007 App State unfortunately.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:55 AM ^
I just happened across it one day while scouring the internet for Michigan football news sometime during the Hoke years. The content—UFRs, diaries like “Best and Worst”/“This Month in MGoBlog History”/“Ecky Ptings data diaries”, and of course you sarcastic assholes on the board—had me hooked right away.
I lurked for a few years before creating an account, then a few more years before making my first comment.
Thanks for all the good times, MGoBloggers.
Go Blue!
January 8th, 2024 at 9:13 AM ^
How have you racked up that many points as an initial, long-time lurker? Truly made up for lost time.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:21 AM ^
I spend an unhealthy amount of time here. 😊
I'm pretty sure that my first post wasn't until 2019, but I'm not sure how I can go back and find out.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:59 AM ^
You joined 7 years 2 months ago. If you click on your user name in post, it will take you to your profile page with that and other detail.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
I knew about that. But the dates are all messed up when I try to find my first post. Looking under the "activity" tab, it says the oldest post was 2 years and 4 months ago and the dates appear to be out of order.
As far as I can tell, my first post was actually in 2020, so I lurked for almost 4 years after creating an account and at least 2 more before that. I'm like a damn cicada.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:55 AM ^
The coaching search updates leading up to the Harbaugh hire are what brought me, I was a longtime lurker before staring to post
January 8th, 2024 at 8:56 AM ^
For years before I knew this site existed I was on ESPN and Mlive forums. Twitter and youtube were the next best places to read and comment with other fans. Found this place during the 2021 season by accident and read comments for a year before joining. I have to say the mix of personalities makes this forum interesting lol. Its also the quickest way to get any Michigan news happening and its great to be able to share times like this with fans on all levels.
Have fun tonight everybody and lets hope this team finishes the job. Its been too long of a wait for us to see success like this but these boys have been a pleasure to watch no matter what happens tonight.
Go blue.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:57 AM ^
I don’t remember since 14 years was a long time ago lol.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:16 AM ^
Maturity beyond your years.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:58 AM ^
I started reading when rumors were swirling about a certain WVU coach boarding a private plane bound for Ann Arbor. I created an account and became an infrequent poster somewhere around Brady Hoke's 1st Spring game.
January 8th, 2024 at 8:59 AM ^
I have been here almost from the beginning. I started lurking in 2005 - Haloscan days - and became an official posting member in 2007 for the post-Lloyd coaching search.
(Below is the first thing I ever posted on MGoBlog. I have no idea why I thought to screenshot it at the time. I must have known something.)
I picked up on MGoBlog from being on MLive. As a data analytics guy, I appreciated the data-driven approach to its analysis. But what kept me coming back (and abandoning MLive) was the writing.
Next year will be my 20th year on MGoBlog, and I will potentially pick up my quarter-millionth MGoPoint sometime during tonight's game.
What a ride it's been!
January 8th, 2024 at 9:05 AM ^
Its crazy, how some of you old timers almost feel like family to me.
We've been through a helluva a lot together on this board.
Everything from dogs anal glands, too many depth charts, rich rod, mgocamping, the og neg bang, the wla, mgojen, tater, section 1, mcfarlin, k06em01, big pussy.
So many gone and almost forgotten
January 8th, 2024 at 9:08 AM ^
We're grizzled veterans! We've seen some shit, man.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:11 AM ^
I don't know whether to be mad or happy I know basically every one of those references.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:10 AM ^
Haloscan! It's been a ride, that's for sure.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:13 AM ^
I picked up on MGoBlog from being on MLive.
Same here. Right away it was obviously a better place to be. (MLive didn't exactly set a high bar, unless you wanted a detailed weather report of the SW Michigan shoreline every morning.)
January 8th, 2024 at 9:55 AM ^
As a fellow haloscan poster (infrequent as it was) who found this site around the same time, I have to ask... how/why do you have a screenshot of your first post!? Honestly I'm jealous, I wish I could go back and read what I posted back then. Makes me wonder if I read your post way back in Dec 2007.
January 8th, 2024 at 11:51 AM ^
I honestly don't know. I think it was to see if the post worked (and if subsequent posts would work), since it was the first thing I posted after creating an account. It was more of an administrative thing, as opposed to a thing for posterity.
I think I did the same thing after the post-Haloscan upgrade to Drupal.
But I do occasionally save MGoBlog screenshots of things that I think are milestones or are of interest for "posterity."
One thing that I've learned on the internet, most links that you save won't work after a few years. If you want to see it again, save a screenshot.
January 8th, 2024 at 12:02 PM ^
I think I did the same thing after the post-Haloscan upgrade to Drupal.
Yep, sure enough, I have a post-Haloscan upgrade to Drupal test screenshot too. I was Mich-Dog for a couple of days, but something happened to that account and I came back as M-Dog.
I CLEARLY spend too much time on this site.
