META: The official MGoBlog app doesn't work

Submitted by taistreetsmyhero on

Like several others, I spent significant portions of my days reading and posting on this blog using the HD app.

As is, the official MGoBlog app is unusable.

I'll only be using my computer to access this site now. And, since I feel like nobody cares about the user experience, I will be doing the only thing I can to protest: I'm turning on Ad Block until a usable MGoBlog app is created.

edit: obviously I'm being melodramatic, but this is more the straw that broke the camel's back than an obsession over the HD app.

Another former heavy MGoBlog HD app user here, and I tried going the mobile web route today, and while it does work just fine, its a major hassel.  The nonsanctioned app was far and away the best way to use this site.

If you never used it, you don't know what you were missing out on.  Kinda like saying "I've always driven a car that had a stick shift and it works just fine for me."

I knew I'd get this response.  I've driven stick and automatic.  Stick is a major pain in the ass.  Especially if you're in traffic.  If you're on open roads and want to feel like a race car driver, sure.  Stick is the way to go.  But for everyday life?  I can't for the life of me imagine why you'd pick the convienence of automatic over manual.

Always gonna be those "I prefer to roast and grind my own coffee beans" people though.

I probably purchase ~$500 worth of amazon products a month using the MGoBlog link.

Not anymore. I'll use a different site's link. And I'll turn Adblock on.

That has no problem with the official app? I didn't know about it until today but it has worked smoothly, just loads a little slower. Other than that no complaints.

You are actively taking steps to reduce the site's income because you are unhappy with the browsing experience. A site that you willfully admit to spending a "significant" amount of time that does not require you to spend a dime to consume its content, and you are doing what you can to ensure that its proprietors make less money. Seems reasonable.

I'd gladly pay for an app that works. The iPhone app just keeps crashing.  This makes it hard to view ads that generate revenue for the site.

Years ago, Brian talked about creating a "premium" offering for folks who would pay X dollars per year to have an ad-free experience. I'd gladly do this to have a way to actually get the content through a reliable channel.

There was a market for the HD app because it WORKED.

Its the only way to get Brian to actually do something.  He's shown he has nary a fuck to give about what the people that actually use his site think and feel about the user experience (there have been plenty of threads discussing this lately with zero feedback from Brian on it) so until either the traffic or the revenue changes, he has no incentive to change anything at all about the site.

I was a major user of the MGoBlog HD app, and I don't think I'm going to use the other MGoBlog app, but I started just using my browser, and it's not that big of a deal. I'd definitely rather use the app, but I can handle the browser version on my phone. I definitely don't care enough to start using Adblock, but I would like an improved app.

Brian makes the very best apps. The apps are glorious and work wonderfully. He knows many app developers that say this is the best app. They work bigly. #PostedFromTheMobileWebsite

Content is free on just about every news website outside of AAA ones like WaPo or NYT.  The thing that makes the profitable is the symbiotic relationship between the people coming for the content, and the publisher.  They run ads on the site based off of user traffic, so even though the content is "free" they are still making money off of it.  The valuation for this site is right around $1M.  So GTFO here with the "its free" argument.

The reason people are pissed is because we're getting tired of being neglected with a bad user experience.  And since we like the content here, we'd like Brian to fix it so the symbiotic relationship can continue.  If he doesn't, the user base will eventually move to another site.

I deleted it weeks ago because I was tired of waiting for it to be fixed. Incredible that a venture as successful as MGOBLOG still struggles with so many elementary concepts when it comes to technology.
