META: Can't post in Android app

Submitted by Moleskyn on

Let me preface this post by saying that I really like the newly redesigned Android app, and I appreciate all the work the developer(s) have put into it.

But I haven't been able to post in the app with either my Nexus 10 or Galaxy Nexus (both running 4.2.2) for a couple of months now. Basically, what happens is I type up a post, but when I try to submit it, I get a message saying something like “ Unfortunately MGoBlog has stopped working” and the app crashes. I really don't need to post using the app very often, which is why I'm willing to wait for an update, but I thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone else has run into this same issue. I know an update hit the Play Store last week or so, but I haven't noticed anything different with the posting capability.

If anyone else has run into this, it would be great if the dev could just say something like “it's a known issue and we're working on a fix,” or “here's your problem, do x,y,z to correct it.” Honestly, even if you said “yeah, we know it's a problem but we're probably not going to fix it anytime soon” would be fine. I just want to know that you're aware of the issue.

Thanks again for all the time and effort you've put into this.

That's not going to happen. I think it was Seth who said something about it in the last thread about the Android app. Drupal (the software that runs the blog) is basically a collection of modules. The old point system is one module as is the new moderation system. There is also a module that exposes the data for the app to use. Since they are separate modules the latter has no connection to the former two and, therefore, doesn't know to send that information to the app. It would be a huge pain for them to go in there and alter the code to make moderation available on the app.

Do you know if the great MGoDrupal Migration will include a mobile web site module? Nothing against your great work here, but it seems like displaying a mobile-friendly version of the web site would be 100x easier than trying to copy all the functionality to apps for different platforms.

On my Galaxy S3 when the app first updated, it would crash when I posted. Awhile after that, maybe after an update, I could comment for a little while, but now it crashes again whenever I try to comment.

I was going to say "me too" until my phone said MGoBlog shut down.

Really though, the first time it happened, I had a really long response to somebody. Probably for the best, since I never see when people respond to me and MGoBlog has yet to have the reddit-style message icon that shows when someone replied to your post.

Unless that exists, in which case, how the hell have I not known about that in over 3 years of having a username? When I post a comment that I hope someone has replied to, I always have to go back and check manually...

Droid Bionic. Exact same thing. But I do like the format, so I've just accepted that there is no posting from the phone. IPad is fine though.

Try uninstalling the app and reinstalling, it appears to have worked for me.  Previous to doing that I was not able to post, either.

It seems that if you've downloaded the latest update over the top of the old one, it won't work, and an uninstall/reinstall is required.  At least, that was the case for me.

EDIT:  Never mind.  This worked for me once, but just now I tried to post and got the dreaded "Unfortunately MGoBlog has stopped responding" error message.  Le sigh.

My SGS3 is the same way.

Can I ask a question? Yes? Ok cool: is there a reason the forums part of the board can't act and look like, say, slickdeals? They have such a great forum setup. It wouldn't even have to have nearly as many features but just the basic stuff, like notifications, number of posts after you read the thread, skip to last new post, block quoting instead of inserting your reply higher up in the thread, etc. I know nothing about this really but just a thought I've had for a while.

I just downloaded the app to my new iphone 5, and opened it up.  At the bottom was a bar not unlike those seen on the Facebook app or the App store where you can navigate between different pages.  One of them said "Battle" and had "2" indicator over it.  I thought it was some new feature where people argued.

Nope. Ad for a fighting game. Derp.

Cool story, bro.

I have the same problem on my GS3 as well. Be sure to send a report when it does it. Also a friendly email to the developer may give you some answers as well. I emailed him a year or so ago and he reaponded quickly and was a big help. He may well chime in here as I have seen him posr here before as well.

I was doing some dumb hacky stuff to get comment posting to work and get the app out the door originally. I completely scrapped it and did it right this time and I haven't seen the bug come up yet in my test branch.

You guys can expect an update either tomorrow or Saturday with both the comment posting bug resolved, and image viewing within the app.
