Men's Hoops Snowflakes (66-57 Win over Illinois)

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

Well apparently Michigan didn't appreciate being called "white collar" by Illinois. Came out and gave a very solid defensive performance. We didn't shoot the ball well today, but it didn't matter. Oh, and DJ Wilson for Heisman.

What are your takeaways?

We choked them out with our white collars.

Their collars got tight?

He said what everybody has felt about this program for some time now.  I love Beilein and what he has accomplished at UM, but under-talented teams need superior effort, toughness, and defense to compete.  If we can't recruit with the big boys and simply outscore teams with Beiein's system, we need to get down and dirty in years when we aren't starting 4-5 future NBA'ers.

Personally, I wasn't offended at all by what Illinois players said, it's fact until we play consistently tougher like we did at Wisconsin and today. Let's make it a trend.

4 of 5 included today.  2-2 on the upcoming stretch would be pretty good.  3-1 outstanding.  Play defense like they have the last two and they will win (at least) 2.

Yes 3-1 would be huge.

Yea the 4 of 5 is a bit of a stretch to say they're needed as the back end of the schedule has the winnable games but we need at least 6 but likely 7 more wins.  3-1 the next 2 weeks would very much help make that attainable.  Getting Wisconsin back at home would also bode well.

The last two games are necessary, but not sufficient evidence of a defensive turnaround. If they put a solid performance against IU next, I'll be believer. Still good to see that the team is tougher mentally than the posters here (myself included),

I think it's really just MSU and IU.  For OSU, there's a little spillover enmity from football but it doesn't fully feel like a rivalry game to me.

The rest don't particularly move the needle for me.   I might choose Wisconsin as the next most annoying just because of the agonizing way we keep losing to them.

How the hell did Michigan let Illinois go on a 17-6 run in the last 4 mins? Not a good sign if they expect to win any close game the rest of the year.. that's brutal

The hottezt of hott hott takez. I don't have enough points to start a new thread but if I did I'd post "beilein's the loosingest loser of all the losers. Letting Illinois cut a 20 point lead to 9 is PROOF!!!! And I'd do it in all caps for emphasis.

DJ Wilson had a great game.  He was the best player today.

Derrick Walton, however, is Michigan's most important player.  They need playmaking, leadership, and shot making from the point guard position.  He had a rough stretch, and so did the team.  He's a senior leader, it's his time to lead the team and make plays when one is needed.  X isn't ready to contribute much offensively, so the team will continue to go as Walton goes.  If Walton keeps playing well this team will make the tournament, and once in, Wilson and Wagner can make them a little dangerous.

Now that looked like the Michigan basketball of a few years ago.  We didn't just win games back then by out-shooting everybody; we won a lot of them by buckling down and competing hard.  Especially in the Novak/Douglass years.
