Meet IU's next offensive phenom: Tyler Natee
tl;dr - Kevin Wilson is B1G Football's version of John Beilein. He is adept at producing high level, offensively skilled ball players seemingly from thin air and then watching them wreak havoc upon unsuspecting B1G defenses while cackling with glee as he concocts a new fangled way to use screens. And also his defenses are notoriously bad. We need to start raiding his classes before he signs them. Also this Natee guy may be good.
This is Tyler Natee:
He is from Euless, TX and went to the same high school as Chris Daniels (Trinity) who you may remember as that DT from Texas we didn't sign not named Jordan Elliott. Trinity is in the 6A class of Texas High School football which is the highest in Texas and therefore the world. Level of competition questions do not apply. Natee is a RB/Wildcat QB for the Indiana Hoosiers. He had TWO D1 scholarship offers: Arkansas State and Indiana.
I found multiple listed sizes for Natee:
- Random Local News Article (I didn't write it down and I don't feel like finding it again) - 5'10" 225lbs
- Hudl - 5'11" 239lbs
- ESPN - 6'0" 242lbs
- Rivals - 6'0" 255lbs
- 247 - 5'11" 258lbs
- IU Roster - 6'0" 260lbs
- Scout/BTN - 6'0" 280lbs
So he is somewhere between De'Veon Smith and Maurice Hurst in terms of size which super narrows it down. His hudl and some IU related tweets list a 40 time of 4.69 and I've found other sources that go as high as 4.8. Usually I would look at those listed sizes, what should be a well scouted high school and that offer sheet and bury those times in a mountain of fakes. But...
That's against Concord De La Salle (Asiasi) who was ranked #1 in the country at the time. (Full Game Link)
And here he is doing his best impression of De'Veon:
Here he is putting the whole team on his back. The other team:
Here he is dropping it in a bucket on a corner route on the run:
Here's his hudl:
In that is a better angle of the 44 yard TD run againt De La Salle(Full Game LINK). How the hell does this guy fly under the radar when he plays on the same team as a guy who had 30 offers and was seen on a nationally televised game?! This is what the satellite camps were supposed to prevent. iuhoosiers.com on how Wilson found him:
Natee was a hidden gem of sorts that Wilson stumbled upon by accident.Wilson was in Texas asking coaches who the best player around was when he got the tip about a Trinity quarterback who's 6-foot, 260-pound frame was a hard sell to head coaches who didn't see him in person. Wilson didn't have that problem, seeing him play and realizing he wanted him for his 2016 class as a flexible fullback type rusher.
QB | RB | WR | OL |
Tre Roberson | Tevin Coleman | Shane Wyne | Dan Feeney |
Nate Sudfeld | Jordan Howard | Cody Latimer | Jason Spriggs |
Devine Redding | Ricky Jones | Jacob Bailey | |
Simmie Cobbs |
Personally I think we should do a quick run through of all Indiana's offensive recruits every year to see if any are worth offers. This is also further evidence that if IU ever figured out how to play defense they would be a formidable foe in the East (why didn't they hire Don Brown?). Hopefully that day never comes.

Wow, I want the OP on my Draftmageddon team.
And it sure paid off, didn't it?
We got caught a little bit by surprise by IU, Minn, and OSU. It won't happen this time.

Rich Rod's ego wouldn't have let that happen. Calvin McGee was the 'OC' because he wasn't a threat to RR. Great offensive mind, his, but too much ego to accept help and admit weaknesses...

Why are we crowning a player the "next offensive phenom" when he hasn't played a single game of college football?

4.8 doesn't sound great to me. He was the #5 FB in the 247 composite, not a complete unknown.
I get the point that Wilson is a good offensive coach. But he's forced to recruit from a pool of players that we and the other big boys have passed on. In this case it was a player that even the little guys didn't want. Good for him if he finds a diamond in the rough. I'm sure he'll get a few. This guy is a candidate because he has unusual measurables for a QB, unusual background for a FB. He sounds intriguing, but that's different than underrated or overlooked.
And who plays for IU.

He wasn't going to get invited to Ditka's Restaurant. The boys must be headed to White Caskets for some rectal rockets.
Is 20-41. Let's not pretend him finding all these diamonds in the rough is indicative of his team's sucess.
There has been NOTHING in his time at Indiana to show that the team is on the upswing. They've been consistently bad. And to show how fast time goes, he's been there six years already.
The thing is, Wilson's offense has never been the problem. He's kind of like Rich Rod in that sense. Amazing high scoring offense, with a paltry defense.
Do against superior competition, but Rich Rod's offenses put up a ton of numbers against weaker teams or coming back from 28-0 (Iowa game, forgot which year, comes to mind) and making it look better than it actually was.
He'll never win in college football with the way his team is set up.
"Not sure how Wilson's offenses do against superior competition"
Last year, he put up 27 on OSU, 26 on MSU, 27 on Iowa, and 41 on us.
Put up 17 against MSU, 10 against Michigan, 7 against Penn State, 23 against Rutgers.
I'm just trying to see how his offense compares to RR's. Rich Rod seemed to really light up the crap teams and would run into a wall when teams knew how to defend the spread.
I was completely surprised at how much Indiana pushed around the d-line of Michigan last season.
I don't think he'll ever win with the style he has. You can't win without making defense somewhat of a priority.

The most successful coach in the history of the program (Bo McMillin) went .500 in B1G play.
They've won two B1G titles. Ever.
They've been to ten bowl games. Ever.
The fact that Kevin Wilson has them in the "entertainingly bad" category is light years ahead of where IU football's been during my, and most likely any of your, lifetime(s).

His 2010 team was able to move the ball, but they had two true sophomore QBs and no kicker. I think that had a lot to do with the depressed scoring totals against good teams. Even with a stellar defense, it's hard to win consistently when you lose the turnover and special teams areas.
He can put up all these great numbers on offense he wants, but until he figures out how to put even a mediocre defense on the field, he's going to continue winning at a 33% rate.

You don't remember the time Kevin Wilson took his team to the national championship, or his Big Ten championship ring, or getting most of his starters drafted in Round 1?
Well then buddy, it sounds like you are seriously underrating Kevin Wilson, one of the best coaches in his sport.
about Wisconsin linemen.

How to tackle, I know I have been warned that he has played high school football with the best in the world. Those "Highlights" are filled with the worst tackling I have ever witnessed. So in high school he was hard to bring down. Randel el was next to impossible to touch, BIG difference.
I am confused why a UM blog is discussing a lesser rival (this assumes everyone in the B1G is a rival...I'm looking at you Rutgers) and one of their under-the-radar recruits. What is the connection to UM?
Is this the first in a series of posts by OP where he identifies other B1G recruits that might be under the radar? Not sure I (for one) have any interest in such posts...where does is the logical conclusion, discussing new punters/kickers for Purdue? Long snappers for Nebraska?
Even if posted...shouldn't this be OT?
Are people truly bothered when things aren't labeled OT?
OTs will come under more and more scrutiny every day from this point forward.
Need to loosen up then. It's a sports message board, this isn't a paper on the current economic state or a discussion on serious psychological issues.
