MBB Recruiting: 2015 5* F Luke Kennard to Duke

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on
Huge bummer. Michigan was recruiting him since the 8th grade and he was the #1 priority for the 2015 class.

you just perfectly exemplified my least favorite aspect of this board. im trying to be objective, so I must be biased against Michigan in someway? id rather the board not be a perpetual circle jerk, but instead a place where ppl can exchange honest thoughts.

who will be a good teammate, so I assume Kennard fits that role. I have the sense that the past few teams have had great chemistry. I like that about Michigan. You don't get that same feeling of harmony about IU, MSU, Purdue or OSU. I would rather focus on "quality kids" that are 3 and 4 stars and pass on some 5 stars that would end up being problems.

if i were a hot shot recruit, the pull of playing in the duke unc game would be huge for me. everyone would love to see sparty fall off the map, but the UM MSU basketball rivalry could blow up. i dont think we'll get duke vs unc hype anytime soon, but substance wise are we so far behind in the short run at least?  meeting them in the finals would help raise the profile, i'd think.

how often do you have powerhouse school without a great rival?

I pulled up Luke's highlight video on Rivals and I have had an opportunity to watch Austin Grandstaff in Dallas area.  There isn't a lot of difference between the two.  I would love to get Austin!  Luke plays in a lower division and Austin plays in 5A.  5A is the highest division in Texas.  Austin lead DFW in scoring this year at 30+ and there are two top 6 2014 5* stars, Mudiay and Turner, in DFW.  I talked to Austin and he is coming to AA for a visit this summer and hopes to get an offer.  He really likes to watch Nik play.  Florida is another team he is interested in.  His Dad talks to Bacari quite often.  I posted an amateur scouting report on UMHoops.com

But I'm not gonna lie, it would be nice to get some "above the radar kids"...wait, above?

In all seriousness though, definitely wanted this one. And Zimmerman for that matter.

but we're really digging. Our coach is apparently an elite talent evaluator who basically wins with whoever he feels like putting on the floor. I'm sure if Rivals could go back and 're-rate' everyone that Caris, Trey, THJ, and Nik would all be vastly higher than where they were before. Beilein gonna Beilein

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining.  Whatever Beilein is doing is working great.  I'd love to see us get to that next level; maybe we need to win a national championship, maybe we can never get there and be clean.

My only point was that we're not here because of getting above the radar guys.  We're here because Beilein (and staff) is an elite talent evaluator, and an elite talent developer.

If this is the ceiling, it's a hell of a ceiling and I'll take it all day long.

at the very top. There is no next level. We outplayed Louisville in the NC game and only "lost" because the officiating was abominable. Now, we're in the Sweet Sixteen despite losing arguably our best player and projected lottery pick to injury for the whole season. Only luck separates us from any fictitious "next level." To maintain at the very top level, we need to still get some top 50 players and top 100ish players every year. We did that again last year with Chatman (top 30) and DJ Wilson and Doyle (top 100ish). We have another top 100 redshirt freshman in Donnal. So, we're doing fine. It would be great if we got even more top players and it's a mystery why we don't. But we have plenty of talent for a phenomenal coach like Beilein to keep us at or near the top.

because if there's one thing I know to be true, it's that John Beilein never takes a group of 3 stars, makes them a tournament team, and possibly gets a few of those drafted in the 1st round of the NBA draft. Definitely never does that. Needs 5* talent at all positions to win.

But seriously, right now we have three 5*s on the team. One is injured, the other is a 6th man, and the other is generally considered the weak point of the starting 5.

Our PG is a 4* true freshman, our SG is 3* sophmore, our PF is 4* sophmore, and our center is a 3*....and we're favorites to make the Elite 8 this weekend. John Beilein can recruit whoever he wants! I don't care. I just know he's going to win with whomever is on the floor

Recruits that talk about relationships etc that go somewhere else after the fact. Seems to me there were a few FB recruits with this talk. So when they don't walk the talk and move on .. Michigan won. They are not a fit for this school. We are better off. No worries. They will come.

Aren't they getting Okafor as well?

We'll see how Coach K does with these two... but I don't know, it seems like he hasn't adjusted that well to this 1-and-done era.  Lot of disappointing seasons lately, albeit sandwiched around one great one.  But with all the talent they get year in and year out, you would think they would at least be in the Elite 8 every year, not bowing out in the first round two out of three years.

The upside though is that every time Duke loses, an angel gets its wings.

stars and recruiting are fun, but as our football team has shown the last couple years, not essential or a guarantee of success. as nice as it is to get garret taylor, my response to football recruitnig these days is, 'ok, but lets see it on the field'.

well, we see it on the court with our bball team. kid made a reasonable choice, good luck to him. it would be fun to see our on court success result in 5 stars throwing themselves at the program, but as long as we have beilein it doesnt seem to matter.

Is this a bummer? Yeah, sure it is. But Beilein has proven he doesn't need blue chips to win.

Novak? Morgan? Albrecht? LeVert? Burke? Stauskas? Hardaway? None of these guys were blue chip recruits. Some were barely even recruited, and yet Beilein made them all essential pieces of a winning program. He knows how to find talent, he knows how to develop the hell out of it, and all that's done is gotten us two Big Ten titles, a title game appearance, an All-American or two, not to mention the best damn player in college hoops last year. Oh, and several NBA draft picks, with undoubtedly many more on the way.

Would've been nice to get this kid, but we shouldn't lose sleep over it. Beilein will make studs out of whoever he recruits.

He was leaning away from Michigan for awhile and always seemed like a long shot. Plus, he seems like a likely one and done. I would prefer a player who stays a couple years or more. So I would prefer to get another top target like Jalen Brunson, Jalen Coleman or Eric Davis. Just looking at the objective results recently, Michigan would seem to be the most desirable choice for any basketball recruit these days - best coach, clean program, best talent development and the most elite on court results. But every kid makes a decision on an emotional level or for other reasons unrelated to basketball. And a few other schools like Duke are close to Michigan in all the above areas.
