That notorious football factory reels in another one.

Maybe he wants to play school, unlike certain Buckeyes.

Really big get for Duke. Solid building block for Manny Diaz.
December 23rd, 2023 at 2:49 PM ^
It is but I'm not sure if Diaz will notice. Like, Duke may beat Clemson next year handily and his QB may go 8 for 9 while Duke runs thru them for like 220+ yards and Diaz may then bench Murphy the next week for only completing 8 passes.

This off-season portal is showing that playing time is more important than program prestige.
Guys want to get NIL and go pro as soon as possible, and transferring to other big schools and waiting your turn isn't it.
No schools are going to be able to have QB depth anymore.
December 23rd, 2023 at 12:44 PM ^
Unless you are Oregon, apparently.
December 23rd, 2023 at 12:49 PM ^
Murphy got leaped by Manning, why would he stay in Texas?
December 23rd, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
No one expected him to stay at Texas.
My comment was in response to the idea that these big names that transfer are inevitably going to end to at another big program.
But instead, a lot of these big names are ending up at smaller programs like Syracuse, Duke, and Kentucky.
December 23rd, 2023 at 1:28 PM ^
That is still oversimplified. There are lots of QBs going to places like Oregon, Notre Dame, USC et cetera that were already getting playing time.
If you are a proven commodity you will go to the big programs. If you are transferring because you can't get on the field why transfer to another place you may not get playing time.

A whose who of our recruiting rivals.

Posted this somewhere a month ago, but Duke is immensely popular with fans. There's a huge amount of football growth possible there. Often, the knee-jerk response from we fans to almost any school is derision; but the status quo doesn't have to remain in play. What are the prospects, the demographics that will determine viewership in, say, the decade to come?
If the B1G were to bring in Duke, FSU, ND, and Clemson/NC. . . that would mean not only a lot of good football but academic prestige in spades. Also gives you the makings of a regional corridor for divisions.
December 23rd, 2023 at 1:36 PM ^
They just need a fifth team when UM moves over to SEC. /s
Fuck B1G.
December 23rd, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
I like the thought, but it doesn't seem as college football is trending in a direction where academics will be much of a consideration for players, viewers, alumni, casual fans, et al. I don't think we can look at Maalik Murphy's decision and conclude college football is once again prioritizing and valuing the college degree available to the players.

In some cases it’s money first, playing time second and other cases it’s reversed. What it hasn’t been about is development and winning games. I’m honestly wondering how many of these kids actually are chasing a championship?
December 23rd, 2023 at 1:35 PM ^
Dante Moore picking Oregon is all those things. Gets to develop, play in a big time program, make bag, chase a championship.
December 23rd, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
Doesnt Oregon worry about the evils of paying players? Sure it works for the NFL, Bama, Georgia, OSU but really who else?
December 23rd, 2023 at 2:01 PM ^
Dante Moore is a terrible example. He's chased bags 3 separate times and clearly that is his only priority.
Yes, Oregon may get to a playoff, but that's not why he's there.
December 23rd, 2023 at 5:41 PM ^
You said guys are transferring for playing time. Moore transfered in behind Gabriel, into a bigger program, that will likely regularly be in the playoffs.
December 23rd, 2023 at 2:12 PM ^
Duke has had a first round QB more recently than Michigan so I’m not sure how you can say it’s not about development. Also how do you develop other than by playing? I know every one keeps talking up JJ, but he hasn’t declared and we don’t know where he’s going to go in the draft.
December 23rd, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
They won’t even sniff a championship at Duke. This one has to do with playing time. Manny Diaz just got there so it’s not even the same staff for development sakes. Nobody goes to UK or Duke in football with elite talent other than to play, it’s not to win at an elite level.
December 23rd, 2023 at 6:14 PM ^
You mean every 1 but you keeps talking up JJ... clearly.
December 23rd, 2023 at 6:14 PM ^
He’s going to Duke because he is guaranteed to start. Also they are going to be decent in a bad conference.

Thamel (loser and a dork) mentioned on ESPN that Will Howard could be waiting to see what happens after the bowl games. Mentioned Michigan specifically.
December 23rd, 2023 at 2:29 PM ^
Why would Ryan Day tell him that?
December 23rd, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
This sucks. He was the one I thought we had a realistic chance at if JJ leaves and would’ve been a good fit. Not sure if UM kicked the tires. So much untapped potential, he has already shown some nice flashes.
Michigan was really interested in him out of HS and we all knew something had to give at the Texas QB situation. I never thought I see the day when a high-ish profile QB transfer goes to Duke when there are seemingly other options on the table.
December 23rd, 2023 at 5:28 PM ^
We have no idea the factors that went into his decision. As somebody said above, maybe he wants to "play school." Maybe he values the exceptional educational opportunity. If so, hope he balls out and walks away with a degree from one of the top schools in the country.
December 23rd, 2023 at 4:44 PM ^
He committed to a school where he does not want to wait another year and compete to start, instead starting right from day 1. I am sure Duke crowned him the starter in the first game next year, and throughout the 2024 season. He has no offensive weapons, so he will probably be mediocre, but at the same time Duke's best offensive player.
December 23rd, 2023 at 5:29 PM ^
Duke with that bag again.
A good pickup for the Blue Devils, and with Diaz as HC and whatever is happening with FSU and the continued mediocrity with Miami and Clemson they might be one of the better teams in the league next year.
