LSJ calling for MSU President Lou Anna Simon's Resignation

Submitted by UMgradMSUdad on

Lou Anna Simon is no longer the right person to lead Michigan State University.

While Simon’s 12-year tenure has been marked by numerous accomplishments, there is one stark and significant failure that now overpowers all else: MSU’s inability to keep women safe from sexual assault and harassment on campus.

That failure belongs to Simon and her team. The time has come to hold her accountable.

You create a blatantly racist Black Face character, and then think that anyone cares about your opinion about anything, much less such a serious situation? You are a disgrace. You keep trying to dial this character back, but it's too late.

I don't know him (WD) or know whether to like or dislike him, but I find it poor logic that User A so often *concludes* that User B has multiple accounts without sharing something like unequivocal ISP# data or nearly unequivocal linguistic analysis of word use. Or something/anything. All of those would result in the user (and all accounts) being banned. Anything less than that is less than enough to have a decent conversation about this. You don't like WD and many users don't like being subjected to conspiracy theories without evidence. You are creating an annoyance equal to the one you are responding to.

I don't have the airtight evidence needed to support my claim. I can't prove it. I can say that if people were so inclined, they could have gone through all of FH's comments, and came to the same conclusion. I get your point, and even considered it, but once I put the pieces together, I was upset enough to come after him. I do not feel worried at all about possibly coming after the wrong person, let me put it that way. Now he's successfully got the character banned before it came back on him. So I guess that's that.

I agree. This isn't like a rivalry thing. This isn't a point and laugh thing. This is an "are people safe on campus" thing, and under her leadership too many people were not safe at MSU. Wholesale change is needed, and that starts at the top.

Also, this from the editorial: Fast forward to April 2017, when Simon told her Board of Trustees: “I have been told it is virtually impossible to stop a determined sexual predator and pedophile, that they will go to incomprehensible lengths to keep what they do in the shadows.”

That's... not the proper attitude to take as a University president when confronted with the problem of sexual assault on your campus.

In my admittedly limited experience, there were many areas of MSU in which women were not safe. When I visited there, a female friend pointed out some running trails, and told me that everyone knew to stay away from them, due to numerous sexual assaults. This was over 13 years ago. And when I later lived in Lansing, you heard similar stories. This isn't the same as the administration enabling an institutional predator, but the culture has not been safe for a long time.

I heard this plausible explanation: For legal reasons, public statements shouldn't not admit culpability. Granted, I think its shitty. But I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, and if we assume that she doesn't actually, you know, support rape, there is an alternate world where she abhors it and still makes this comment. I could be wrong, but I'd still assume she's not a F of sexual assault. I'd bet there's a CYA going on.

What about the NCAA? Or the Big Ten? Mark Emmertt and Jim Delaney haven’t done shit about this. The MSU Nasser crimes are despicable. Penn State shouldn’t have had SMU level sanctions and so should the entire MSU athletic program. Also Jail.

This Nassar thing isn't getting the publicity it should when in reality, it may be bigger than Sandusky was. Anyone who was complicit in his abuse of gymnasts or athletes gotta go too but for Simon, it's bigger than this, it's that there is a rampant issue of sexual abuse that her office has tried to sweep under the rug over the last decade. Ain't gonna cut it.

Simon, Hollis and Dantonio should have been gone. The assaults will continue because the athletes are allowed to assault. That’s what they’ve been told by their peers and by the heads in charge of the programs. Izzo is lucky as well because we all know and remember what the guard who’s in prison now for guns and the forward with the rare blood disease did. It’s sick, all of it.

Lou Anna Simon is the Joe Paterno of today’s college athletics. Hollis should be right behind her on the way out. As for Mork and Izzo...good coaches but their ethics are HIGHLY questionable. They’ve both let sexual predators run rampant on campus, and I won’t even get into the drugs, alcohol, firearms, racism, and authority disrespecting nature of their programs (for years).

In the case of Dantonio he knew of prior issues with some of the players he brought in, he likes to use the second chance thing and that's fine but is that fair to the other kids on campus when you are bringing in kids with sexual assault charges in the past. If I where a parent of one of the young women attacked I would be pretty pissed at the guy who brougt them there. For some reason (his record against Mich.) He is cut slack in this. He had Mumphries come back for a camp. He's done this since he's been there ie Eric Knott, Campbell if you recall he didn't pull that offer until after the third incident and it got too much attention. With Robertson he snuck him in after signing day. Who was the asshat that stole the computers from DPS? If this was Harbaugh he would have been stoned by the local and national media.

Guys, I know this isn't great, but Michigan is restricting Wilton Speight's transfer which is way more outrageous.  Also, feel bad for poor Greg Schiano.

The atheletic department has been riddled with sexual assault and harassment issues. He ought to get the axe as well. The Mumphery case is just the latest that shows football and basketballs players get away with anything at MSU including rape and sexual assault.

Hollis is retained because of the higher profile sports like basketball and football having suck- cess but if you look at the big picture the athletic dept is kind of a joke Jackie Joseph has been the softball coach for years without winning and having some legal issues brought against her the vickers team has been a dumster fire for years when that used to be a proud program . He has had some hits like the aircraft carrier game and such but overall he sucks as an AD but gets cut slack because of Dantonio and Izzo

We as fans allow this to happen because of our love of sports we allow student athletes to behave in a way we wouldn't an average student we allow coaches to get away with a little less ethical behavior then our administrators as long as they win. I had a Buckeye in front of me a few years ago say if you aren't cheating you aren't trying this leads coaches to bring kids like Robertson, Appling, and others to campus Dantonio would put satan at RB if he thought he could help him beat Michigan

Remarkable it took them this long to come out with any kind of condemnation, very curious that it doesn't include Hollis who should also be just as accountable, if not more so.

I actually don't think Dantonio deserves any blame and he seems like he handled the one situation presented to him  the way he was supposed to (somewhat ignoring the overall culture of the team toward discipline for more thenall transgressions, here only focusing on sexual assualt and those players are/were gone) so not trying to go at him at all, but the athletic department in general bears a huge amount of responsibility and Hollis owns that completely.
