Looking more likely that Red will come back next season
I'm not even gonna comment on this.
George has a pretty good feel for these things. Have been told the chances of him retiring are growing slimmer by the day. https://t.co/1WshrO0XUz

I think Red Berenson will be back for a final season. We'll see what happens with meeting later this week with Warde Manuel. @umichhockey

A quote from the Freep-
“I think we all know that last year wasn’t good enough,” Berenson told the crowd at the Junge Family Champions Center in Ann Arbor. “The culture has to change. Priorities have to change.
I love Red. Been watching his teams since he arrived in Ann Arbor. But it's time. Red has NOTHING too prove to anyone at this point. Yes, he has earned the right to choose his time of departure but this sure feels like he would just as soon retire and Warde is asking him to stay.
It was a year ago that's for sure, but now i think Red just doesn't want to go out this way
I don't know who "George Sipple" is, although I suppose I should. Is there news from anybody else who has more access to the program? Michael Spath is claiming ignorance here, only saying that Sipple generally is correct, which is very different than saying that he is hearing the same things. Plus, Sipple is not even saying he has a source--he is saying that he "thinks" Berenson will return.
Also, there's a former Michigan Daily writer who said that he was hearing the exact opposite. So right now it's all rumors and guessing. Let's not melt down every time a twitterer says something; there will be an actual announcement soon enough.
That's why I sort of don't follow coaching changes too deeply. They tend to be littered with people saying one thing or another, with limited reliable information.

At this point what's 1 more year? I'm ok with it as long as it is announced 100% that next season will be his last.
Another year that we cannot bring hockey recruits to Michigan because it doesn't seem likely that he will be there to coach them for the next few years. Nor would any really great high school players want to play at Michigan if they were to look at recent years. So, the scenario would be essentially to have a lame-duck coach. I would love it if Red went out on a high note. But, it is also true that we need change in the hockey program.
What do you actually know about the freshman class coming in?
It depends. If Red makes it clear he's leaving and he'll be instrumental in picking his replacement, I think recruits will be more open to it. A lame-duck coach is one without a contract who is going to be fired but nobody said anything. If you say "I'm gone after this year, but I'll do good by you while I'm coach as well as the guy I help choose", that isn't as detrimental to the program. Also, it's Red Berenson - firing him now wouldn't necessarily be any better for the program because then you'd go through a somewhat acrimonious replacement.
And honestly, I thought Red should have left a couple years ago, but at the same time, some guys can choose how they want to go out.
You don't have to be fired to be a lame duck. And why would it automatically be acrimonious?
It's not so much that. He's been telling recruits that for many years, even before their national final run. Most outstanding players will plan to only stick around 1 year anyway. I think it's more like Berenson just isn't a great coach any more, and at 77, he's lost respect from the 17 year olds.
Nonetheless, should be his decision to make. He's earned it
I also don't think there's a prayer of landing Mel if his former boss and mentor is fired, or any decent coach if we act like SEC teams and fire legends, like the front page suggests. Talk about short sighted
Twitter is great for a lot of things, but one of the worst things is that these small random thoughts are being taken as official reports.
Red is meeting with Warde this week. Let's hold off on our outrage until something actually happens
All your fault, dude.
Actual, concrete information from the Freep: Warde is back from the West Coast this week, and will be meeting with Red then to discuss his future with the program. That could very well end with a retirement agreement. It could not. We don't know. But this isn't decided yet.
WD, listen to the folks over at USCHO--they actually know a little bit about this program and where it's going. This isn't as awful as you think. The sky is not falling. Another year of Red isn't ideal, but if the ducks aren't in a row for the replacement Michigan wants, what's the better option?
I said nothing other than posting this tweet from Spath.
I'm not commenting until something happens.
Band dude. (and not Band Geek out of respect).
If you are available, YOU are a better option. That is how bad it has deteriorated. Is three years enough for you to make the jump?
Capiche?
Concrete information, in the same sentence as the Freep, is a contradiction in terms.
...they were quoting Red...
But was it Mitch Albom doing the quoting?
He's coming back. Said it then-say it now.
You also called Manuel a fat, gutless coward, for dozens of reasons. Should Red go? Probably, definitely by next year. But I've noticed that a lot of your criticisms come from a distaste for Manuel as much as whatever actual issue (Red, the BTT game against Illinois, football scheduling) you are commenting on.
If this report is true (that Red wants to come back) I guess Manual will settle the debate himself now won't he?
And just wondering - IF Red wants to come back and Manual allows it will that change your opinion of him any? Cause I will say it here and now that Red wants to come back and Manual doesnt let him it will sure change mine.
Red and Bobby Bowden, two excellent coaches who may have stayed longer than they should have or wanted to. I undestand that Red wanted to hang them up last year and Manuel asked him politely to stay another year(s) while they straightened out the Harbaugh contract, as well as getting settled in at his position too.
Well, that is according to Red.
While the "staying on cause he needs me" comment makes no intuitive sense, I also have it on inside authority that it did not go down like that. Close relative works at AD.
But even if he didn't work there, I would believe you had Brooklyn Bridge for sale before I believed that.
You summed that position up as artfully as it can be, to where it almost seems logical. Red, however, when it went down, said things like Manuel needed time to be moving furniture into his new house rather than looking for a hockey coach.
This has ALWAYS had the indicia of an old man who is afraid to try anything else in life, and is not budging. He simply cannot see it is time. Someone needs to help him, softly or not so softly.
Somebody at FSU finally saved Bowden by brokering a deal; do we have anyone with similar strength at UM? I would think so, but this has gone on WAY too long already.
It's exactly what Martin did to Carr (and to Miles). I don't find it remotely hard to believe that a corporate shill wouldn't want to be bothered with a 'less important' sport
Any jackass on here disrespecting the enormous contributions this man has made to Michigan hockey as a player and coach needs to look inside themself after reading his bio and hearing his players talk about him.
Born in Ann Arbor in 1962 while Red played for UM. Give the man his due
Have the utmost respect for him. Legend.
But at the end of the day it's about the program, and it's wrong to hand in seasons because "we owe it to the guy."
Let's continue to honor him in the best way possible as we move on with a new coach.
This is the way to do it. GMHF tell's Red to go to hell in such a nice way that Red looks forward to the trip.
You don't "honor" someone by telling them to fuck off. This *program* would be nowhere if not for Red, certainly not 2 championships, 20 some tournaments and over 800 wins
What does it mean to "give the man his due"? Employ him indefinitely?
For hockey apologists, this is now, "No coach other than Red is more important that the team,...
Born in Ann Arbor in 1953, while we were winning our third consecutive NCAA hockey championship. What do I win?
Berenson deserves our respect and appreciation, yes. He does NOT deserve a job up until the very instant that old age has robbed him of every ability he every possessed other than to tell you his name.
He does NOT deserve the freedom to lie to the press about Manuel needing time to move furniture into his house rather than hiring a hockey coach.
As for you, let's hope you do not get what you deserve.
If this is actually about to happen, Warde please show some balls and hand him his Golden Watch.
You can be diplomatic about telling him it is time. You are responsible for this Athletic Department. Red is clearly not at his best judgement right now. Step in and do the right thing.
According to Red, Manuel asked him to stay so Manuel would have adequate time to move the furniture into his new place in A2.
Red is not exactly a reliable source at this juncture. Can him now please.
Why is this being downvoted? There is no opinion being expressed. It's just information.
