Looking for anything on Mark Harmon's comments
September 9th, 2013 at 8:03 PM ^
He did a quick speech before the game. On Inside Michigan Football tonight, Hoke said he spoke to the team Saturday.
And there is a press conference on MGoBlueTV with him but you have to have a subscription.

Brandon is quite the CEO at the end of that video.

This is likely from the presser on the day before the game - HERE - but I did like the quote from Mark Harmon:
“Where the jersey goes, who wears it, that’s up to Dave, that’s up to this university, and in that we trust. I just think it’s an important thing to recognize. I think it’s time. My dad was only proud of Michigan. He was proud that everything in his life kind of came back to Michigan.”

I was ecstatic to see Mark H. standing on the field prior to the dedication. I'd love to hear/see what he told the team.

he showed up on the radio and was similarly distant... his comments about UCLA, where he was the starting quarterback, seemed especially odd to me. He basically said he's been back there "once or twice" and didn't seem to have seen a college football game before
September 9th, 2013 at 8:32 PM ^
Personally, I thought the entire thing was a bit odd. We all know the Harmon family has some unknown and longstanding beef with 1000SSS, and that it was a long time coming to get this night to happen. As opposed to the other Legends presentations, in which a gaggle of family members were in tow, Mark was the only Harmon out there. And his comments, tears or not, seemed a bit forced. I hope it was just stagefright or something, but who knows...
September 9th, 2013 at 8:46 PM ^
I've never heard anything about this, and what's "1000SSS?"

Mr. Bando is too cool to refer to the Athletic Department by name.

From MVictors, last year on Media Day:
There don’t seem to be any specific plans yet to honor Tom Harmon via jersey, ceremony or otherwise. Still, the October 20 game against Michigan State has been slotted, on the game tickets at least, to honor Old 98. It’s long been rumored that the Harmon family’s relationship with 1000 S. State Street (#1000SSS) has been cool at best. To be clear, I’ve heard a few things through the years but nothing at all from #1000SSS or from the Harmon family. Ask me over a cocktail.

The rest might have been up in a luxury box or something. We know a couple members of the family were present. https://twitter.com/umichfootball/status/376470107427328001/photo/1

Well, i really liked his comment on gameday when asked about the only time ucla played michigan during his time. he said he was knocked out fo the game on the 2nd or 3rd series and he only remembered that "they kicked our ass".
September 9th, 2013 at 8:27 PM ^
but I'd forgotten that Harmon was knocked out of the game.
I've always wondered if Mark had wanted to go to UM, and whether he was offered a scholarship by Bo. I would rather have seen him up in the booth at halftime with Kirk and Brent than MM.
September 9th, 2013 at 8:35 PM ^
Let's be honest and say that one of Lee Corso's chickens would have been better in the booth than Eminem.
September 9th, 2013 at 8:45 PM ^
I read somewhere (I wish I could remember where) that Mark didn't want to go to Michigan because he didn't want the pressure of having to live up to his father's legacy.
September 9th, 2013 at 8:49 PM ^
FWIW, he was a JUCO transfer, so it's not like he was a conventional recruit. Not that it really made as much of a difference back then. And since he would have been signing up to compete with Denny Franklin for playing time in just two years of eligibility, plus the Harmon legacy, why would you go to Michigan in 1973?
September 9th, 2013 at 9:32 PM ^
I heard a radio interview about 5 years ago where Mark Harmon was asked if he was recruited by Bo.
He said that Bo did call him and talked to his father, but Mark wanted to stay in California where he considered home although he respected his father and Michigan. His did didnt pressure him in any way and let him make his own decision.

Didn't he grow up in LA?

And now the one most mythical belongs to a player who might turn out to become mythical himself in the long run. So, it's only fitting that Devin Garnder wears Ole 98.
Tom Harmon wasn't just a great football player in college, he was a great guy off the field. And I can't think of any other Wolverine who ever received a standing ovation for his play in Columbus other than Tom Harmon.
As much as we think of Charles Woodson and Tom Brady as huge legacy heroes, and we know of Anthony Carter's three time All-American status, Tom Harmon is the old Heisman winner with the ancient mariner legacy from the leather helmet era, and so time has fogged the memory and the recollection of his accomplishments.
Michigan football these days is pretty much about the Bo era as the starting point of its modern history. Tom Harmon played in the days that are now mocked as the time when Michigan ran up its record against lesser opponents and built its reputation beating up inferior competition. If that were true, then Michigan wouldn't have such fierce regional and major rivals, which, of course, predate Harmon's arrival at Michigan.
The irony of that argument or contention is the weak sister scheduling that takes place now in the non-conference just to build stronger identities. You can't have it both ways.
We can get upset about the way Dave Brandon has ushered in the legacy program and the use of hallowed numbers for current players. We can get upset about the commercialization of the program and the more intense focus on money and brand connection, but behind it all there are simple messages which when distilled, resonate no matter the generation of fan, team or alum.
Don't you think the emotion of a Brady speech to Team 134 carries the same weight and sentiment as Mark Harmon explaining what his father fel for Michigan, and how proud he was to come back and represent him and their family? This is Michigan, fergodsakes.

I read years ago that the time came when Harmon wanted to donate his actual Heisman trophy to the U, and whoever he contacted turned him down.
September 9th, 2013 at 10:24 PM ^
That seems crazy. Why would we turn down his Heisman Trophy?
September 9th, 2013 at 10:56 PM ^
Correct me if I am wrong. I thought two Heisman trophies are made each year, one for the athlete and one for the school. That is still no reason not to accept the one he has.
September 9th, 2013 at 11:54 PM ^
As an aside, UChicago has a surprisingly swanky rotunda-type lobby with the first Heisman at the very center in its rec building. If you ever go to Chicago and visit the MSI, it's worth the five or ten minute trip out if your way to check it out.

Harmon (Mark) has had a long friendship with UM lacrosse coach John Paul. I know from past alumni updates that he had hosted the club team on the set of NCIS a couple of times when they had traveled to play in LA. I can't find the article now, but I think I read in one of the stories that came out this weekend that JP put Harmon together with Brandon.
I have heard that there was some tension between the Harmon family and the athletic department, but from everything I saw and read this weekend it looks like Brandon and Harmon have patched all that up.

had a nice clip of Mark Harmon talking about standing on the field at Michigan Stadium and thinking about his dad speaking of the aura of M Football and thinking, "I finally get it."
Tito get me some tissue!
