[LOCKED] OT: Might be a Wild Week in Pullman

EDIT - Let's just stop this now with KBLOW's wonderful and correct observation - "Their Qanon coach has all his other vaccinations. This is not a moral/religious stand."

Nick Rolovich is not a pious man with a thoughtful objection. He is an obstinate wanker who apparently wishes to be sacked. It's pretty simple - LSA

I'm not saying which side I'm on, nor am I posting to start any arguments, but all eyes out West this week...

Washington State coach, Nick Rolovich who is not yet vaccinated, faces a Monday deadline to get the COVID-19 vaccine or get approved for a religious exemption, which he is seeking. The vaccine mandate was levied by the state of Washington for all state employees. If employees don't get the vaccine or an exemption by the Oct. 18 deadline, they will be fired.

Ignorance isn't a religion, despite a large portion of the population's fervent devotion to it.

I'm sure you can find another job's requirements more to your liking, Coach.

Anyone who thinks they shouldn’t be required to take a vaccine for a virus which isn’t a statistically significant threat to them, especially when that vaccine doesn’t prevent them from catching or passing on the virus, and which also carries with it the slight chance of serious side effects, is obviously ignorant.

Yet there is no protest over seat belts. Not wearing one is almost never going to injure anyone but the chooser. There is viable evidence that has shown that wearing a seat belt has actually resulted in a fatality.  Yet, I see no protests or citizens asking fellow citizens to sign a petition to get rid of the state DoT. When I see that, I’ll buy your position.

One truck driver vs. tens of thousands? What are the potential negative side effects of seatbelts? Who was denied access to public venues because they didn’t wear one? Is there a demographic that’s at little to no risk from serious car accidents? Does anyone develop natural immunity to the effects of car accidents by having been in an accident previously?

When they first started mandating seat belt laws, there WERE a bunch of people who threw huge fits about it.  I'd say it's more comparable to the resistance to mask requirements, but yes.  People were asked to perform a minor behavioral change to improve their own personal safety and some of them raised a fuss.

Now we've had seat belt laws for decades, and a lot of us never knew a time before they were required, so there's not much fuss.  Sort of like how a person will accept a dozen vaccines that have been mandated for half a century but want to complain about the one that wasn't mandated a year ago.

I have to wonder how this plays in the locker room. How do you face a team which you demand all sorts of sacrifice from, and tell them that you are not willing to sacrifice in this instance? That you are willing to walk away from them for this? And even before that; how do you coach a team, which entails a lot of screaming and spitting and being in enclosed film rooms and the like, without being vaccinated?

I'm sure the first argument will be, "the players are young and healthy and not at risk of death," but I'm thinking in more immediate terms. What if he accidentally infects a senior who has to miss the last games of his college career due to his coach getting him sick? Or what if he gets a draftable player sick and forces him to have less tape with which to convince scouts?

The second argument will probably be, "we don't know the long term effects of the vaccine." But we do know the long-term effects of football, including brain injury. Rolovich asks his team to face those risks. And yes, the players are there voluntarily, but it still shows some misalignment in priorities -- "Yes, 90% of you will never make a dollar playing football, but keep banging your head against this other guy despite the known risks. Meanwhile, I will walk away from you out of fear of some risk, the chance of which I admittedly do not know and which might very well not exist."
