Lets Get MGoPersonal: What ads are popping up for you on the front page?
Since its a slow Friday afternoon and the strangest ad just popped up on my front page, I was curious as to what you all are seeing on your front pages courtesy of the Google ad engine. Cut and paste what you're seeing to the left of this thread. I think it might lead to some interesting conversations. Here's what I just saw on mine:
(I have absolutely no idea how this ad relates to any Google searches I've done recently but I clicked on in anyway in hopes that it helps the site somehow. If anyone is looking to get a technical degree, this one sounds pretty cool. Probably not really useful unless you live near a large body of water, but cool nonetheless.)

I am very happy to report that I am currently seeing no ads...

I had one for the movie "Man of the House" with JTT and Chevy Chase to purchase it on Amazon for $1.99. I was tempted.
You want to hear something funny? There used to be a MSU troll (azfootballfan) that posted on the mlive UofM board. He once posted a screen shot of MGoBlog with an ad on the top that was for an MSU site to purchase MSU tickets here, and he was saying how obsessed MGoBlog is with MSU. The idiot obviously didn't know how internet advertising works.

Hotel ads for hilton and radisson...since those were the last two hotels i stayed in last trip it all makes sense

My ad blocker keeps me from seeing any ads at all. I know, I'm boring... :(
December 14th, 2012 at 4:53 PM ^
I use an ad blocker too, but I turn it off for this site because I would like for Brian to get money and keep this thing going. It's pretty easy to set an exception on most ad blockers, you should do it for sites that you want to support (like this one).
December 14th, 2012 at 7:03 PM ^
Even knowing how advertising works, it never really occured to me that my Adblock could be detrimental to the blog. Thank you, I'll be turning on my exception now, but only for Mgoblog. :)

I have REI and bank of america adds currently.
December 14th, 2012 at 7:46 PM ^
Ditto REI, and an NCAA13 ad for some odd reason. I also had the hot girl tshirt ad yesterday, and now M womens BBall ad...

Now that is target marketing!

I ordered my wife some stuff from Victoria's Secret for Christmas. Now I get Victoria's Secret ads. In other words...
EVERYONE GO BUY SOMETHING FROM THE VICTORIA'S SECRET WEBSITE RIGHT NOW.
December 15th, 2012 at 2:52 AM ^
Yup. Vicky's Secret on mine too. Also the Magic Bullet on Amazon.com, which is not as exciting as you would think. We also get two of every mail item from Victoria's Secret somehow. I've always said that good things always come in sets...

Premium Insurance, Amex, watches.....I've apparently tricked the internet into thinking I have more money than I actually do.

Hmmmm...

I get the hot chicks in t-shirts, too. I guess Big Brother isn't sophisticated enough to differentiate between genders yet.

December 14th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
You buy one hot chick wearing a t-shirt, and they profile you forever.
December 14th, 2012 at 4:59 PM ^
So is there a reason there are hot chicks without t-shirts showing up for me?

I am jealous, I love those.

Perhaps a scantily clad picture of Denard would rev your engine?
December 14th, 2012 at 4:44 PM ^
Same. I get these all the time. And I've never search for or purchased a funny t-shirt, so I have no idea where this comes from.

One is fairly mundane from bowl trip search, but got lucky with the other from a grocery delivery service and seems to fit right in with the trip

Piperlime. Cole Haan. And yes, Vicky's Secret (the girlfriend visits that website, I reap the rewards).

I work in the auto industry and read online often (Car and Driver, Automobile mag, Autoblog) thus my ads are currently Jaguar and Best Buy, but I'll get Jeep, Audi, VW, and lots of car ads
December 14th, 2012 at 4:38 PM ^
Watches and Diamonds. Jewelry stuff but how can I pay for it? Oh and and the left side an ad for a Citi Credit Card.

where there used to be quotes where the user information is now. for example (had to do some searching for these bad boys);
"Brian has all the warmth of a saber-toothed tiger" -Assistant Coach, Men's tennis.<-- pretty spot on.
or
"The naysayer's Bible" - Tom Beaver
or my personal favorite
"[Brian] the Lloyd Carr of the blogosphere"
December 14th, 2012 at 4:47 PM ^
"Not exactly a rock of journalistic credibility- NYT"
December 14th, 2012 at 4:48 PM ^
I remember those. One about Brian, something to the effect of "he's a douchebag, but he's a smart douchebag." I think it was from a Notre Dame site.
Come to think of it, they would know all about douchebags.
December 14th, 2012 at 4:44 PM ^
Because I just checked my 401(k) and Roth balances on MorganStanley, Discover has taken on the duty of trying to sell me a credit card in the sidebar so I can exhaust said balances. Where is ChopBlock's avatar when you need it?

This I think would be the perfect thread to ask this question that's been on my mind for hte past year or so. So these ads that this website supports; they're obviosuly based on the cookies or whatever concept in one's own computer. When we click on an advertisement, from THIS website, how much does the owner of said website/person who allows the ads to exist here, net? How many "clicks" or whatever add up to be something substantial? If I clicked on the Piperlime advertisement, say 100 times, over the next 5 minutes, would that be a "nice" gain for Guys who run this place or would that even register as more than negligible?
Did I phrase my questions well enough?
December 14th, 2012 at 4:52 PM ^
Seth can answer this question in a matter of seconds but i do remember him mentioning a while back that they get some kind of credit each time we click on the ads? I guess I should probably know this by now . . .
December 14th, 2012 at 5:05 PM ^
Right. I think I remember Brian writing about this concept a while back, This isn't the only website that utilizes advertising, obviously, and I guess I've started to get curious as to how the advertising "game" and the "need moar clicks" generation really works.

Thanks for the info. My wife is actually due next Wednesday and we still need to buy a new monitor. Might have to check those out.
December 14th, 2012 at 5:00 PM ^
Definitely. These things are worth every penny. Plus they appear to be on sale at Albee Baby at the moment! http://www.albeebaby.com/summer-infant-bestview-digital-color-video-baby-monitor.html
And congratulations! I hope all goes just as planned with no complications. Be sure to update us.

I've got four going on right now (other than the UGP ad, which we switched up today). Ads scaled down to fit in window:
1. There's a new ad network (Fan vs. Fan) that launches an hour from whenever I can flag down Brian this afternoon as a test run. It's not always AdSense ads that you see--we're trying a few different ones right now.
2. Marawatch in two spots rotating six creatives:

By the way I drew all of those.
3. Ann Arbor Sports Memorabilia (in certain zip codes)
URL: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ann-arbor-sports-memorabilia-shop
This is the one where Upchurch and I went to the store and took tons of pics then I built the ads. See if you can pick out what I'm doing with the second one here with the beat...
4. The Michigan Daily has a small campaign going on for their new book.

Marawatch.....LOL
And you bust my balls over shamelessly plugging something. At least the site I plug costs nothing but your time to look at it.
But you bespoke it nicely Seth.

I'm gonna keep bustin' them balls till you buckle and start advertising with us (plus I figured a little public ball-bustin' would generate a few hits among the curious).
The blog has bespoken.
