Kirby Hocutt Refuses to Say Washington is in Ahead of Michigan

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Sorry if this was covered in the noon-games thread, but Kirby Hocutt was interviewed on GameDay this morning, and he refused to say that Washington is in ahead of us. He was given every opportunity to, but he refused to say they're in and we're out. Sure seems like he's keeping the door open.

I'm not holding out hope if VaTech doesn't win, but it seems like we have better odds than Jim Carrey did in "Dumb and Dumber."

Story is here.

The money quote: “I can’t speculate because I’d be trying to guess what 11 other members think about (Washington),” Hocutt said. "Small margin of separation between Nos. 4 and No. 5. Great performance by the Washington Huskies. Late tonight, we’ll continue our discussions and have everybody’s body of work in front of us."

Are people forgetting that Washington is coached by Chris Petersen who orchestrated upset over upset in the BCS era while at Boise St?

The dude has some magic when it comes to bowl games.

I'll never forget the Oklahoma upset.

I don't think Washington will get pummeled by Alabama. They'll be the best team Bama plays all year. Certainly the best coach. Who knows what can happen.

I hope Alabama wins that game. They're honestly the only team that I'd say would beat OSU. The stars seem to align for OSU any time they need anything and Bama is the only team in the playoff field that can go toe to toe with OSU, both in coaching and in talent.

If Washington beats Alabama, I'm telling you right now that OSU wins it all.

I like that you have Alabama as some sort of underdog in the playoff where you hope they can beat Washington and go toe to toe with Ohio State. Alabama will be favored by a TD or more vs. all of the playoff teams. And with their offense, Washington is probably the only one capable of beating the Tide. Alabama's defensive line will absolutely murder Ohio State.

Agree, Clemson will likely kick OSU around the field. OSU has not won impressively outside of OK and Neb games. One of those happened in Sept and would not likely result in the same outcome and the other game was against a significantly overrated team who had not played or beaten any relevant team prior to being ranked in the top 10. OSU should have lost to MSU and Mich, so I think Clemson will destroy them. I'll be giddy watching that play out

I doubt that.  Clemson's had its share of ugly victories, too.  It seems like we're always predicting doom and gloom for OSU and they almost always pull it out.  I think their D will keep them in the game and give their offense a shot, like against us.

Alabama is the one team that might blow out OSU (though even there, I'm not certain).

We also shouldn't forget that bowl games are weird when it comes to motivation.  A lot of upsets happen when the favorite doesn't take the game seriously and its guys treat it as a vacation before NFL Draft prep.

I think Petersen is excellent, but predicting how he'll do in the playoff based on a bowl game several years ago may not be logical.

I was like wth, this dude isn't a Dude in my book!

But, with Colorado's porous defense and Washington's excellent OL, they knew they could just grind it out and not need to put the game in jeopardy of turnovers.

Tough state for Colorado.  I think they would have been better leaving Montez in the game in full health but its Liufau's last game, despite him looking hampered by the leg/ankle injury.

Chris Petersen is legit in my book.  I thought what he did at Boise was a lot to do with having a star in Kellen Winslow but here he is resurrecting another downtrodden program to prominence.  It would be more legit if Stanford and Oregon were more than a logo-painted eggshell this year.

Football is all about the "bounce of the ball" and we didn't get that this year.  I think of NC State where the guy drilled the walkoff gamewinner fieldgoal before an illustrious timeout, then proceeds to miss the same kick on the actual try.  Clemson would be somewhere else at this point in an alternate universe.

The good news? The ball will bounce our way again in the future.

I can't fucking believe that Washington is going to the CFP before Michigan is. Just unbelievable to me.

Those dudes have been down and out for over 20 years.

Sometimes the chips just don't fall in your favor I suppose.

Washington won. We're out. End of story.

Only thing we can wonder about now is if another Big Ten team makes it in, we at least get the Rose Bowl. Probably even against USC. Would be a great way to end the season.

If Michigan would have gotten a 1st down late in the 4th Q vs. Iowa or OSU we would not be even talking about this.

But they did not.  So its over.

They are 12-1, have a conference championship, are ranked number 4, and have beaten the same common opponent as Michigan.

We need to stop being delusional about this. If there is any remaining hope it's Clemson losing and even then I still don't think we get in.

"Small margin of separation between Nos. 4 and No. 5."

  • The committee thinks Michigan is better than Washington
  • No way is the committee going with a second B1G team over Washington

It is what it is.

We are certainly not getting in before Washington.. No way. But I still think we could get in over the big10 winner, if Clemson were to lose tonight.

Because he'd be an idiot to speak for the whole committee on incomplete information.  He is not an idiot, and is therefore disqualified from the position of Big 10 Commissioner.

If Clemson loses, I think we're in. The committee likes looking at head-to-head matchups, and we've clearly got that advantage over both Wisconsin and Penn State. And I don't think a 2-loss Clemson team has a better resume than us.

I love how we are all rooting for the same team here but we attack one another in times of strife...

Until that clock in the ACC title game tonight hits 0:00, none of you have any clue what's going to happen.

Don't roast this guy. That's why they play the games.

I've lost several IQ points trying to figure out how on earth Michigan could ever get in and Washington not. I am now dumber for having done so. And that's something I really cannot afford. Thanks dude.

Michigan played and beat three bowl teams in the non-conference. Washington played none.

Michigan beat a top-10 team in the non-conference. Washington's toughest non-conference opponent was Rutgers.

Taking out the common opponent Colorado, Michigan has two wins over top-10 teams. Washington has none.

I still don't think that's enough to do it, but you can't say that it's impossible to justify. It's hard to justify, but it's not impossible.
