Kevin Wilson: new OC at OSU

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Kevin Wilson officially announced as the new OC at OSU. That was fast. This is probably why Ed Warinner is gone to Minnesota.

Welcome, Coach Wilson!#GoBucks #9Strong

Yes, one of the downsides of not simply assuming an anonymous identity is that when I engage in something like sarcasm or disagreement I run the risk of being accountable for something poorly said.

It would be easier to fire away from an anonymous avi, or create multiple accounts to do my dirty work for me. Alas, in real life I am complex and flawed like anyone else.

I've asked this before, but didn't really find an answer.

Has Indiana officially announced why Wilson was fired? I know the rumors were player mistreatment, but since then I've seen some current and past Indiana players come out to support Wilson. Some Indiana blogs sources are saying that the allegations were way worse than what actually happened, and the university administration decided to cut their losses instead of deal with the potential bad publicity. So is this like the Mike Leach/Texas Tech situation where a helicopter parent blew up what actually happened?

"“Once they figured out that I was actually hurt, I’d say the entire attitude of the trainers and the coaches completely changed for me,” he said. “They were a lot nicer, more caring, wanting to help me with my injury. Everybody except Wilson.”

Under Wilson, IU maintained a tent in one corner of its practice field where injured players would spend practice doing light workouts under the supervision of the strength staff.

The workouts, Carovillano said, were always designed with players’ injuries in mind, and he believed them safe. But, he said, Wilson’s attitude toward players in the tent demoralized him.

“He would come over and yell at us, saying, ‘I’m paying $70,000 a year for you to sit on your ass,’” Carovillano said. “That happened about halfway through the season and carried on to the end of it. If you were injured, he just wanted to make you feel like crap. He just wanted to make you feel bad, so you basically would stop being injured.”

And there's more of him generally not giving too craps if a player is injured. At least at OSU he will literally be paying players!

If Columbus has a press core that gives a hoot, or if alumni get aggravated, maybe this will make Urban uncomfortable. But that's doubtful.

Thanks, but it still kind of falls in line with what I was hearing from Indiana fans, and "insiders" on blogs. That Kevin Wilson was an head coach like those from the era of Bear/Bo/Woody that liked to get in your face and scream.

In the new age of being PC, and putting a premium on player safety, I don't think IU wanted to hitch their wagon to a coach like that anymore that could put their program in a negative light. Nick Saban and Bill Belichick are in the same vein of coaching style in terms of being of no fun, all work, yelling grouches. They get away with it by winning Championships, but it looks like IU didn't think 6-8 wins was worth all the trouble.

Players React to Kevin Wilson's Departure (link)

"I had a concussion in 2014 against Purdue and a separated shoulder/concussion in the 2015 season during the Penn State game. I kept any other dings to myself. Coach Wilson and IU football followed concussion protocol to the letter. Coach Wilson was completely supportive during my recovery and didn't want me back on the field until I was completely recovered and, beyond that, felt that I was 150%."

- QB/WR Zander Diamont (2014-2016)

“For the record, I have had 3 knee injuries requiring surgery during my time here at IU. During my recoveries, I never felt any pressure to return to the field before I was healthy and cleared. Coach Wilson always did what he believed was best for the players. It has been an absolute honor to be apart of his teams.

- OT Jacob Bailey (2012-2016)

"The way he coaches is you're not going to be soft around him. He was hard on us all the time, and I guess if a coach is hard on you, some people just can't take that."

- WR Shane Wynn (2011-2014)

My end point being, there is hardly ever a black and white to a story. Some players felt that Wilson was an old-school, tough SOB of a coach, and other players thought he was verbally abusive.

It looks like IU didn't want to risk the backlash and parted ways with Wilson.

He took an Indiana offense littered with 1 and 2 stars and had them drop science on Big Ten defenses.  Not looking forward to see what he can do with 4-5 stars.  Truly think what he did at Indiana was one of the most exceptional coaching jobs over the last 10 years.  Really not happy about this hire.  Fuck Ohio State.

He ran a good offensive system, and he's good at identifying and developing offensive talent.  But he's not going to be running his system, he'll be running Urban's system, and Wilson's playcalling, which will be his primary duty at OSU, was not impressive.  It's a flashy hire, not a good one IMO.

Also, I'm sure parents will love letting their kids go play for a guy who has a history of abusing players.

Based on what? How do you know what system Wilson will run? Urban Meyer has a run-first identity, and Wilson's system produced two 1,000 yard RBs and a 3,500 yard passer in 2015 at Indiana. In 2014 Indiana produced a 2,000 yard RB, with no real passing game to speak of. And in 2016 Indiana had a 3,000 yard passer and a 1,000 yard rusher again. Sounds like Wilson can commit to any style pretty well. Not to mention his years at Oklahoma where he called run-first offenses with Adrian Peterson and adapted to pass first offenses with Sam Bradford and Landry Jones.

Your criticisms of his player treatment seem totally fair. Your criticisms of his professional resume are way off base.

Is what happens when you get an undeserved victory over a superior team due to bs officiating.  It's karma, eat it.  You said you'd come back to gloat after I told you OSU would get exposed in the playoff because Urban's gimmick offense doesn't work against a real defense, unless you win the pentalty battle 8 to 1.

Glad to see you show your face here again though. Front runner Urban will be out in a year or two because he can't develop a QB, never could. Now that the B1G is no longer a joke, he will need to find another landing spot to scamper away to.

Heart problems for a year and then ND?

But this is a stupid comment. Do you really think Meyer is going to slink away in the next couple years? The dude has over 60 wins compared to just six losses in five years. The guy is an absolute winner, and I'm not going to lie, I 100% would want him as our coach if we could not have Jim Harbaugh I believe a whole lot of Michigan fans would agree as well. 61 wins, a Big 10 championship, a national championship, as well as top rated recruiting classes, and beating the biggest rival five times with zero losses… I'm pretty sure that's a resume we would love our coach to have.

Just because my fanbase is insane doesn't mean yours isn't. At least OSU fans have the past 15 years to justify some of their insanity. This very blog picked Michigan to go undefeated this year. Get real.

buckeyejonross

January 10th, 2017 at 9:01 PM ^

Don't you? First of all, we've only had 3 undefeated national champions in the last decade. Second, Michigan had a major question mark at QB, and was supplementing its QB situation with an underwhelming OL and run game. It was probably unreasonable to think Michigan's QB situation and/or proven inability to run the ball on good teams wouldn't cost them a game, and lo and behold, it cost them three.

It's hard to go undefeated. Meyer has never had an undefeated national champion, and Saban has had only one.

That prediction was for the regular season. Meyer was undefeated in his first two regular seasons at OSU. Michigan has anywhere from 10-15 starters projected to be drafted, and about half a dozen have been talked about by someone credible as having 1st round potential. 8 senior starters on offense and 9 on defense, OSU/MSU were rebuilding. I don't think those expectations were that unreasonable given the circumstances.

It was very reasonable....

3 losses by 5 points.

The 2 regular season losses were by 1 point on the road - last second fg

and of course that OT travesty of a game at the CBus toilet bowl where the refs gifted you the game.

UM was not outplayed in any game this year (except the 1st half in the post season against FSU) and outplayed the Buckeyes in CBus for the entirety of regulation time.

Eventually, you were exposed on a neutral field with neutral refs.

31 - 0 hio

Fraudulent team, fraudulent game in the Shoe.  Not to mention that your coach is a scumbag that enabled violent criminals at UF before running away from Saban (heart problems).

If your pre-season prediction ends up 3 losses off the actual record, I'd venture to guess it was unreasonable.

Michigan got tripped up in exactly the ways everyone outside of Ann Arbor thought they would: Poor OL play, tough road schedule, no running game and an inconsistent QB. I think there's a 0% chance this was Harbaugh's best team at Michigan. With the way he's recruiting, 2018 should be the first team you can reasonably predict to go 11-1 or 12-0.

But 2016 had plenty of warning signs it wouldn't be the year, and every one of those warning signs came true.

The rest of your post doesn't deserve a serious reply because it's hilarious.

You do realize that we were a FG and a fourth down stop in the 4th Quarter from meeting that prediction (which was 12-0, for the regular season). Hard to say that was unreasonable, even with the benefit of hindsight. That was an extremely reasonable prediction, and a less than a handful of bounces from coming to fruition.

buckeyejonross

January 11th, 2017 at 1:50 AM ^

Every single team in America is a few bounces here and there from a better record. I can play that game with everyone.

Next year, when OSU has to start someone other than JT, it will be completely unreasonable for me to predict a 12-0 record, and that's with JT's replacement being hand selected from a pool of three 4 stars and a 5 star. Not Wilton "Brady Hoke late class flier" Speight.

Hard-Baughlls

January 11th, 2017 at 2:26 AM ^

Michigan was in 3 close games all year, and lost all 3.  Every other game they were in complete control by the 4th quarter.  Now, if you want to claim they can't close out good teams / close games, that's fine.

But if not for a play or 2 here and there, they are undefeated....Unlike OSU that squeaked by MSU and was gifted the game against UM...IE, you got the bounces this year, we didn't.

We needed 2 bounces in the regular season to be undefeated, it didn't happen. It's not like we were that Notre Dame team 5 years ago, or MSU last year and were lucking in to 3 point wins every week.

Anyways, doesn't matter at this point, it's over.  I just hope Urban keeps up the gimmick offense and can't teach a qb a route tree so he will scamper away from Harbaugh like he did from Saban.

buckeyejonross

I have been here 6 years longer than you, my man.

Also, your gimmick offense shtick is so hilariously wrong all the time, seeing as how Clemson runs an RPO spread offense and just dropped 500 yards and 35 points on Alabama.

Hard-Baughlls

January 11th, 2017 at 2:36 AM ^

Everybody not in Cbus shitting in coolers saw how ridiculously officiated that game was.  And yeah, UM completely shut down OSU this year....10 offensive points in regulation.  Remember....7 of your 17 came off a pick 6.  And another TD off another bad pick deep in our end.

I know this whole unbiased analysis thing is hard for you....both emotionally and intellectually, but UM shut down OSU in the Shoe.  You got bailed out by crap officiating - everybody not an OSU homer saw it this way.

Clemson finished the job because they had the QB to do so - not turn the ball over.  Gimmick exposed. 31 - O hio.  That's just embarrassing, horrific. No matter how hard you ride Urban's cock it won't help him develop a passing QB.
