Josh Garnett interview on local sports radio
A local Seattle sports radio station (710 KJR-AM) had an interview with Josh Garnett today.
Sounds like the field is pretty wide open. He is not in a hurry to narrow things down. Washington is definitely out though (although the radio host tries really hard to get him to say he might be still interested), as is rest of Pac 12 (even Stanford seems to be out -- doesn't plan to take an official there). Also mentioned Magnuson during the interview as someone he is looking to for an advice. I say things are looking pretty fine for us with Josh.
The kid sounds like a senior in college, not high school. Very mature and sounds pretty intelligent. He sounds very serious about valuing college education and really wants to go to a place with high academics.
Man, this kid is a great fit for us...

nice info. Seems like a great kid who would be an awesome addition to our class. I thought it was down to us and Stanford but from that I think it would be between us and Oklahoma. Magnuson being in his ear doesn't hurt at all.

Also, I see another poster mentioned us and Stanford as the finalists. I even would have said that this is in part because of the strong medical programs at both schools. Are we all suffering from a collective delusion?
Anyone with insight on this?

I thought his top 2 was Stanford and Michigan?
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:36 PM ^
Hopefully he won't be another Myron Rolle...values academics and chooses Okie over us.
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
I think Rolle picked FSU.
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
While there, he won a Rhodes scholarship.
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:38 PM ^
the Myron Rolle who went to Florida State and became a Rhodes Scholar?
December 3rd, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
eh, they just give those out to anybody these days

The last time this subject was broached and someone implied Rolle made the wrong choice said poster got rightfully bombed.
Rolle chose correctly, even though it wasn't Michigan. Let it go.

The ridiculousness of this post, both in fact and logic, is astounding.

Since Ohio fans call Michigan scUM then maybe we can call Urban Meyer scUM. It is childish but you probably get to a few bucknuts. I'd rather not call him UM though.
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
You could also call him Coach Urban Meyer (CUM), but I'd rather we don't stoop to their level.

Fail.
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:41 PM ^
In the interview he mentions he got a visit from Stanford coaches (along with Michigan, USC, and Auburn - and he is going to Notre Dame for a visit), but a bit later he says he does not expect to take an official visit there.
That was a surprise to me.
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:45 PM ^
That seems contradictory...hes going to ND for a visit but isn't taking an official? Why would he go on his own dime instead of using the official visit tag so someone else can foot the bill?
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:17 PM ^
You are reading that wrong. He is taking an official visit to Notre Dame. But he is not planning to take an official visit to Stanford. That is very surprising as I thought Stanford was one of his top choices.
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:43 PM ^
It might be a great fit but if he waits too long there simply won't be a spot left for him. I really do wish he would make up his mind...
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:58 PM ^
especially since Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson will commit before the end of this month and Yuri Wright will commit on his visit
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:03 PM ^
You seem pretty confident in that...
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:07 PM ^
Yuri! Don't reveal all of your secrets. Leave us hanging!
December 3rd, 2011 at 7:56 PM ^
Please find a different way to refer to Urban Meyer. ;)
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:03 PM ^
UM(that sucks) = Urban Cooper

Urbs. Just saying it feels like I'm mocking him

Arrgghhh
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:19 PM ^
It's ok. It happens to us all, sooner or later.
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:27 PM ^
scUM*
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
How about "B.M." then?
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:51 PM ^
In the SEC they say Coach Urban Meyer. You can figure out the acronymn.

Or maybe his visit convinced him he wants to play in a stadium more than half-filled for a team that can win substantially more than half of their games.
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:28 PM ^
In the interview he clearly states that he wants to go away for college. The radio host did everything possible to get him to state that Huskies are one of the colleges he is considering seriously, and he did not bite at all.
Huskies are out.
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
He was talking about where he wants to take his official visits, not about his final choice. He clearly said that he was seriously considering west coast schools where he had taken only unofficial visits.
I certainly want him to choose Michigan, but anyone who concludes from this interview that Washington and Stanford are out, is just hearing what they want to hear instead of what he actually said.
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
If you heard the interview, the radio host tries again and again to get Josh to say that Washington has a decent shot, and Josh just sidesteps around it. If he is still interested in Washington, he could have easily just said so, especially to a home town radio station. He CLEARLY states that he wants to go away for college. Everything he said in the interview says Washington is out.
He does not say Stanford is out, but I am just very surprised to hear that he is not going to take an official there. It is not like Washington where he can just show up whenever he wants. If he seriously interested in Stanford, I would think he would take an official visit even if he has visited the campus before. The fact that he is not taking one gotta be worth something...
December 3rd, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
That was my impression from the interview as well. He's not taking OFFICIAL VISITS on the west coast, but is still considering west coast schools. I don't think he'd bother talking to U-Dub players "everyday" if he had ruled them out already.
Smart kid - there's no other recruit I'd rather see Michigan land.
December 3rd, 2011 at 8:40 PM ^
UW's med school is better if you want to be family doc, sure. I can tell you as a UM med school alum and Plastic Surgeon, the Michigan degree is pretty hard to beat for any specialty around the country.

Of course, the reality is that nobody cares where you went to med school, just where you did your residency...

As for playing football, I don't think there is any question...
December 4th, 2011 at 12:36 AM ^
Also he's going to undergrad, not medical school, so regardless of which med school is better, it should make no difference to him.
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:07 PM ^
Michigan fan huh?
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
Getting him on campus last week was the first step. Hopefully the coaches will cultivate a great relationship with him from here on out leading to a commitment in the future. To all the folks that have said they don't care if Michigan gets to a BCS Bowl, this is why we need to play in a big time bowl: Recruiting advantage.
December 3rd, 2011 at 9:48 PM ^
I am visiting Seattle this week and happened onto this interview this morning. Man, what a quality kid! I wish I was half that mature coming out of high school. Hope to see him in Ann Arbor next year!

Living in the the Puget Sound area I can definitely say that Josh would be a tremendous STUDENT athlete at the University of Michigan. Talk about a perfect fit. Good luck to him.
