JoePa on B10 conf call: "If I had to make a guess," Bolden won't play

Paterno also said there would be an "open competition" this week to determine the QB starter.  Bad luck for those guys -- they have been seriously banged up this year.  We'd better take advantage.

it does seem to lend credibility to the rumor coming out of PSU that the coaches are in total disagreement on the program while JoePa has limited/no knowledge of day-to-day operations. the different voices saying he might, he might not, he's not, etc.

A good friend of mine is an alum and a huge PSU fan, and he says that the general opinion is exactly as you have described.  The various assistants and coordinators are all fighting about the direction of the team and JoePa is completely out of it.  He is basically a figure head who comes to practice and screams "outmeal!  I need oatmeal, damn it.  Now where did I park my horse?"

Paterno benched Edison in favor of an upstart named Alex Grahem Bell.  Edison never saw anything more than mop-up duty.  Of course, when this happened, fans called for JoePa's head, arguing that by this point, he was way too old to make important decisions for the team.

JoePa also remembers what it was like to wake up in the morning and resume his activities with the underground railroad.  He may not be thinking too clearly anymore.

That would definitely be helpful for us. I wouldn't wish an injury on anyone, but I have no problem encouraging the team to take advantage of one.

Man PSU is falling apart, Paterno really needs to go. I mean him leaving has nothing to do with the injuries they have had but just watching them play and the interaction on the sidelines between JoePa and the other coaches is a shame to watch, almost comical. He kind of wanders around with no headset(probably the only coach in D1 football without one) and then he bickers with the red headed guy when a play doesnt work, and it seems like the guy just blows him off. I hear from people close to the program it is udder chaos behind closed doors, coaches fighting, Paterno never at meetings or practice and having no clue who some players are. He is more like a spokesperson than the actual coach. They need to get him a lazyboy and a cup of Tapioca Pudding and let him watch from the booth

One, he is awesome.  If you love old school at its best, you gotta love JoePa. Imagine how those classic uniforms would have been desecrated if they'd had the coaching turnover of a normal school. They're my second-favorite Big Ten team.

Two, as a Michigan fan, we have a pretty good record against JoePa -- why mess that up?

JoePa is a smart man and has definitely see a concussion or 100 in his coaching career.  He will make the decision that best benefits the health of his young QB.

That aside, if we make a Sheridan type walk-on look like a Heisman candidate I will most likely have a seizure

I bet he steals books from Brentanos and then claims he was "confused" when security busts him. Then he gets mad at his coaches when they don't say "hello" to him in the hallway/restroom/filmroom/etc.

I think this is all a clever smoke screen from PSU to confuse and confound our defense as to who is starting. It's too bad that we could really care less due to the fact that all 3 of their QB's suck. Have fun, crazies.

We cannot assume Penn State will not come out ready to play.  We have to play a great first half in order to emotionally wear them down.  Then we have to start the second half well in case they get their emotions back at half time.  Next to the UConn game, this is our most important game of the year to continue to show the country, the conference, and recruits that we are on our way back.  Go Blue!

I used to know one of our football sideline ball boys.  One year (either 1999 or 2000) he was the guy who worked the opposing sideline, so he got to see opposing coaches up close.  When we were playing PSU, we were moving the ball pretty well offensively.  At one point, a frustrated JoePa screamed "CONLAN!  GET CONLAN IN THERE!"

Shane Conlan played LB at PSU in the 1980s.

Does anyone really know, and I mean really know, not just guessing or listening to internet rumors, how much control JoePa actually has these days?

I think the assumption has been for a while that he is merely a figurehead, but even a figurehead can give the pregame speeches, decide personnel issues, etc.  Is there any actual indication that he has given this all up and his only role these days is simply to stand on the sidelines?

If he still has some control, I'd lean towards Bolden sitting, but every other sign seems to indicate that he's probable, and if it's up to someone else, I bet he plays.

I obviously haven't heard the conference call, and was under the impression that JoePa was just giving his opinion, which seems to contradict the official injury report that listed him as probable.

If he failed the memory tests that probably rules him out.  Don't most guidelines mandate a week from demonstrable effects of a concussion?

It's striking to me that Joe Pa sounds like an internet commentator and not like the guy charged with making the decision:  "if I had to guess..."

Whether that's due to the contingency of Bolden's recovery progress or because Joe Pa's a thousand years old, who knows.
