JJ Continues to Lead the Nation in Completion Percentage

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on October 10th, 2022 at 3:48 PM

JJ McCarthy continues to be No. 1 in the nation in completion percentage at 78.3, well ahead of No. 2 (and former Michigan recruit) Dorian Thompson-Robinson (74.8) and No. 3 Taulia Tagovailoa (74.1). JJ is also fifth in QB rating. Those are good categories in which to be good.

Blake Corum is third in rushing yardage and second in rushing TDs.

I've said my theory many times -- JJ was being integrated in 2021 to be the starter this year. It wasn't just packages and gadget plays, it was a way to get his feet wet and know what to prepare for in the off-season to be ready to start in 2022. Adjust to the speed, see some coverages, and so on. I don't think it really matter what Cade did. It was either JJ looks decent/good/great and confirms the plan, or JJ looks awful and Cade gets a chance to keep his job. Cade had a whole season of work to grade. One start wasn't changing the opinion on him.

I think his success IS why people are complaining about the offense.  If your QB is leading the country by completing 78% of his passes, and is 6th in the nation at 9.6 yds/att...but is not even close to the top 100 for attempts a game at 20 att/G (Tanner Morgan from Minn is No. 100 at 23.5 att/G)....

People might have a point.

Eh, none of this means anything.

He was like 11/11 against the worst teams in the county which means 1) his completion % is totally inflated by bad competition and 2) his attempts are deflated by the fact he didn't play much in those first two games.

People are complaining because we haven't just torched teams like elite offenses do.  Maryland has a bad defense (but maybe not quite as bad as we thought) and we wanted to put up 50.

IU has a pretty bad pass defense that gave up 354 yards passing to Cincinnati and 329 to WKU so the expectation was that we should do better than both of those teams if we have a truly elite QB who definitely has much better supporting cast than those two teams.

Seemed like the offense was being held back by the coaches in the first half.  Way too many runs on 1st and 2nd down despite IU being actually kind of good at defending the run.

This, a million times this!

It's also worth pointing out that JJ's achieved this success by making many (most?) of his attempts on downs where teams normally pass. Imagine how much BETTER he could be if Michigan started calling more passes when the defense is selling out to stop the run.

Back to back Uconn wins and one against Fresno st. You know whats funny is if CSU won their conference and UCONN became bowl eligible by seasons end you wouldnt hear a word. The fact that we go from the 112th easiest OOC schedule to exactly on par with Clemson, Georgia, Penn St. etc. would never be mentioned again.

According to Brian, the kid gloves were partially pulled off for Indiana.  They'll keep coming off over the next couple of games.  I suspect MSU will get the full Monty, so he'll have a couple of warm-up games at full power before the trip to the Toilet Bowl.
