Well considering that right now anyone willing to sign on is a good thing, I'd say keep at it.  Besides it's nice to see the staff reaching out and trying to send a message to the public.  Presonally, I think it's fun and hope he keeps it up.

How is he throwing away credibility? Is he not supposed to be excited when Michigan gets a commit if the kid doesn't qualify as a high-end prospect?

All assistant coaches do this, I assume Jay will tweet out the same thing for any recruit they get, be it the number one player in the country or a lightly recruited 2 star. It is pretty insulting to the kid they just got to commit to Michigan if Jay doesn't deem them high-end enough to tweet out that it's #Amaizing news.

Good for them.  Seriously.  I mean that.  I'm as much a fan of the team as anyone on this blog.

I just think it's a little much to go on twitter and gush about a 2* recruit.  *shrug*

You don't have to agree with me.  You could do it with a little less bitchiness, but hey, maybe bitchy is your thing.

I posted my opinion on a wesbite.  I've had people infer that I treat people in my real life like shit because of that post.  I am equal parts baffled and self-righteous right now and I don't think that's unreasonable.  LOL

There is a very large difference between Jay overplaying his hand and Jay overplaying his hand because the kid is a 2 star and not a 5 star. You come off as a fucking twat because you keep defending your position. It's very obvious by your post you think it's ok for Jay to be really excited about someone you think is a 5 star and not ok for Jay to be excited if the recruit is a 2 star. You even shrugged as if that didn't make you less of a twat. You have an opinion that makes you a self righteous douche because you think you know how good someone will be therefore how much excitement a coach should have when talking about him. I don't care if it's your opinion, it's fucking stupid and very wrong

No, I posted an opinion.  Lots and lots of people then chose to insult me for it, which is their right, I suppose.  But you can't claim that I was bitching about anything.  I simply said that Jay was playing fast and loose with his credibility.

You know... when you were a 150 pt poster I would have been excited if Jay Harbaugh tweeted about you.  But now that you are -85 pssshaw.

Hope Jay doesn't say shit about you.  I don't want to get excited about such a low rated poster.... and Jay would be playing a dangerous game....

being a little too hard on ya. Occasionally a post will here mob mentality/hive mind going and they swarm until you just quit in incredulity. Yet, the staff kind of has to be optimistic about any human body qualified for FBS football given their swinging for the fences moves have largely missed. They only had a month (actually less). Yet, I get what you're saying as well! I just wouldn't use the term "lost credibilty" or "playing loose with his credibility" because it implies his excitement is fake or that he'll have to throw a parade for any 4-5* kid from here out. To end: 1) Saying anything about a Harbaugh that isn't shitting rainbows level positive right now is asking to be mobbed. 2) I genuinely think Jay is going along with the model of being excited for ANY offered kid that decides to join the family. 3) Again, I think you're getting it a bit rough. Posters have gone too far. I use the app so I don't care about negs or posbangs or points. If you do take this advice - you have one chance to defend a post you made if called out. If that defense is met with 2 more posters attacking you, just move on. It's how this blog has been since it started. I don't agree with you but the only thing posters here love more than winning games, Harbaugh & various board historical memes/jokes/etc is snark and ganging up on a poster that insists on their unliked opinion being defensed/explained. The collective will bury you here. 3 consecutive negative replies = move the f*** on. That or use the app to rid yourself of seeing negs/pos/points. Ignorance is bliss. Now go look up all the NR-3* recruits that just started in the SB last night. Coaching over stars, IMO.

Thanks for the rational response.

I get that Jay's excited.  Given that I trust Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff to get the most out of all our players, I have faith that regardless of who comes in we'll do really well.

As for the rest, I sincerely don't care a bit about the negs.  Your comment about the hive mind is spot on, so I don't take that stuff seriously.  What got to me were the people intentionally misreading and misrepresenting what I wrote.

At this point it's water under the bridge, though.  I'm not going away because I value the information that's on this site and I'm not a fan of knuckling under to bullies.  I probably won't post much, though, since the risk/reward ratio seems to be pretty low.

Anyway, appreciate the reasoned objections/disagreement.  Have a good one.

Ok.  Look at it this way.  When Fred Jackson was forever finding new and better superlatives for running backs, didn't people stop believing him?

If every time one of your co-workers came to you for feedback on their work and all you ever did was praise it to the skies, even if it was mediocre, wouldn't you then stop taking their opinion seriously?

Sure but that is not what's happening here at all nowhere even close. First of all he is spelling the word amazing as amaizing. So first off do you think he is using the literal definition of the word amazing? Or because he spelled it different do you think it's safe to assume he means it's good news for Michigan and something that may not be literally amazing has happened? Any recruit is good news. Jay wants to let the recruits know that he is happy and glad they signed on to play and be educated at Michigan. This is for them mostly and a little signal to fans that the school has gained another commit. So his credibility is not on the line and you're using a very fucking strange chain of logic to tie this into jay harbaughs credibility.

Another point: Harbaugh can't come out and say, "Glad John Smith committed to Michigan today, he's an Amaizing talent!" because it's a recruiting violation.

IME Harbaugh isn't even calling anyone amazing. He's just using the most thinly veiled, but still allowable, language possible to let his followers know that Michigan gained a commit.

Yes, exactly. If he praises each recruit the same, then they all come in on the same level. Recruits don't just come in and get handed a position because of their recruiting prominence, they all start out equally. So this is exactly what should be happening. Its hard for an opinion to just be wrong, but yours is absolutely wrong. Change it.

You're just embarrassing yourself at this point. You made a stupid comment everyone knows it was stupid (including yourself) don't bother trying to defend it. What shoukd jay harbaugh say. Hey guys just got a two star recruit he'll probably suck but just letting you guys know. I can't believe the star obsession with the way so many highly ranked recruits haven't put up results while msu keeps rolling with their 3 star army. The ability to develop what's there matters much much more than a star next to a name.

February 2nd, 2015 at 4:41 PM ^

You can't be serious....The coaches don't give a flying fk how many stars are next to a guys name on Scouts or Rivals...they have their own evaluation process. They evaluate, offer and if the recruit accepts their should be celebration for all involved: coaches, players and their families.

Heptarch, if a coach were to take the tone of "well, you'll do in a pinch" with lesser rated recruits (some of which could develop into great players with the right staff), then that not only gets around Twitter but will turn away more prized individuals. Who wants to play for someone who exudes some half-baked elitism based on subjective recruiting ranking? Jay is doing precisely what he should do here, and he's doing it quite well.

Also, as a mod here, I would urge you to sit the next few out.

Heptarch

February 3rd, 2015 at 9:16 AM ^

I'm not saying he should take that tone with the recruits.  All I was saying was that you can overplay your hand if you're casting your praise around indiscriminately.  But that's neither here nor there at this point.  The reaction to my post was what it was.  I'm surprised and disppointed at the venom... but whatever.  It's not going to drive me away.  I value the site too much for that.

I'll politely decline to take your advice, though.  I've never been a big fan of allowing people to shout me down... but after this post I will let it die.

No offense, but if the kid is someone who our really freakin' qualified coaching staff want to offer, they should be happy when they commit.  Doesn't matter if it's a 3* or a 5*.  Not saying the probabilities of a 5* being a good player aren't higher than someone lower, but they're also not offering them because they don't see the potential for them to be contributors.
