Iowa offensive futility in one tweet
Shehan Jeyarajah tweeted the following. (Not a Twitter user, but I found this particular one fascinating, and near-impossible.) Referencing the Hawkeye game with Illinois that they lost 9-6. But Ferentz says there is no possibility of making a coaching change/firing his son midseason.
So if I understand right, Iowa just... -Punted from their own 16 -Recovered a muff at the Illinois 35 -Went 3 plays for -6 yards and punted -Forced a fumble and recovered at the 5 -Went 4 plays for -4 yards -Kicked a field goal A 15-play, -10-yard, 76 punt yard field goal drive.

💪🏽 I strongly prefer Michigan’s brand of nepotism - where the family member is exceptionally talented and successful.

Fundamental problem with monarchies and family businesses. Great form of government if the king/queen is "enlightened." But the transition to Junior is frequently quite fraught.

That explains the tigers and red wings

Not really, lie downs have SUCKED from the day that wcf was in charge. Didn't get worse when he handed the reins over to anyone else in the family.
October 10th, 2022 at 4:22 AM ^
Ah, but WCF was a son and grandson in a family business.
October 9th, 2022 at 10:46 PM ^
I think the Red Wings are being managed very well, actually. If anything they're being pushed to competence too quickly after being cratered under the previous generation of ownership/leadership.
October 10th, 2022 at 12:38 AM ^
Yzerman proved himself down in Tampa and he made some great moves over the summer. Love the Uncle Fester hire so far. Makes me think he was Yzerman's guy all along and was just waiting for Tampa's Cup run to be over.
You're right in that their young talent is still pretty raw. They're probably 2-3 years away before they can ice a team that can make a deep run into the playoffs (Conference Finals). They finally have enough talent to make the playoffs but the Eastern Conference is tough.
Regardless, with Stevie Y's moves this summer, our roster is pretty solid. We should have some great competitive hockey to watch in Detroit this year...for a change.
October 10th, 2022 at 9:51 AM ^
It could be said that the current wings are paying debts collected off of keeping that playoff streak alive for Papa Illitch. Yes, Holland made some questionable moves...but the drive for that streak dictated a lot of that.

It wasn’t too long ago that some here were wanting Harbaugh to fire his son.
October 9th, 2022 at 10:45 PM ^
Well Jaybaugh should get a lot of credit for his RB recruiting, but the RB play and substitutions have been better since Hart took over.
October 9th, 2022 at 10:47 PM ^
Everything he's touched had been really good. The animosity just because he's Harbaugh's son has been surprising to me
October 9th, 2022 at 11:31 PM ^
AFAIK that was pretty much WD who had some weird anti-Jaybaugh complex - from all appearances he's been great at all his stints and his units have consistently been some of the teams' best performing
October 10th, 2022 at 9:56 AM ^
He's also his nephew, not his son
Edit: No striketext, forgot that...also, he is his son, lol

Pfffft. If Jay’s last name were Ferentz, he’d be just another guy.
October 10th, 2022 at 8:38 AM ^
Iowa has played 3 games where the two teams scored a combined 17 points or less, and lost two of the three.
October 9th, 2022 at 9:50 PM ^
Referring to any part of the Iowa team as an "offense" is inherently offensive.

Assuming 3 FG for the Illini and 2 for the Punters. What a dog shit game!
October 9th, 2022 at 9:53 PM ^
The formatting of this tweet is reminiscent of Iowa’s offense.

I blame Brian Ferentz.
October 10th, 2022 at 3:06 AM ^
Littlefurrybuddha, confess. Are you really Brian Ferentz?
October 9th, 2022 at 9:53 PM ^
Staggering that Ferentz the Younger is so utterly incompetent. Even a blind squirrel, as they say. More staggering that Ferentz the Elder is so entrenched that no one seems to be able to get this kid moved on to something he's got a better chance at doing decently. If they are even a middling offensive team (say in the 60s or 70s), they win the B10 West pulling away. Hell, they did it last year with a 110-ish offense.
October 9th, 2022 at 9:56 PM ^
If only Fran McCaffery would send Brian a message to help him see things could be better for him and his family elsewhere…

This is one of the funniest things I've seen this calendar year!
October 9th, 2022 at 10:50 PM ^
I don't see what the problem is. Don't forget that after Lloyd Carr retired Kirk Ferentz could have been coach at Michigan!
(Ferentz is a good coach in many ways, but along with Franklin he's one of the most frustrating coaches in the B1G in the last thirty years or so. I'd rather have him than Franklin, though.)

Much like jay paterno and joepa. jay could not get a coaching job once dad was done, I bet that asswipe is still selling his dad's memorabilia on some local PA cable channel.
October 10th, 2022 at 3:10 AM ^
Maybe it's not so staggering that Ferentz the Lesser is not good at it.
Coaching big-time football, college and pro, is a skill, and as with any skill, some are good, most are okay, and some are bad.
Maybe we all opine so freely that we forget how hard the job really is.

Iowa fans are furious that Brian Ferentz was caught smiling on the sideline after the Petras interception with 1:35 to go in the game

Of course Mel Tucker would say total pass defense.
October 10th, 2022 at 11:20 AM ^
TL;DW Harbaugh = only points matter. He is a focused winner. Day, everything because we have the athletes to do it all and doing everything is easy because I inherited a behemoth. Half of the big ten says time of possession. Iowa, offensive yards. Tucker stumbles into an answer of defensive passing yards. Franklin must have a ton of penalties in his life.

This guy (Jeyarajah) voted Michigan 8th this week. Eff him and his unintelligible football takes.
October 9th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
To his defense - he saw Michigan give up 14 points to a Brian Ferentz offense - And it impacted him far more than your average voter.

Brian Ferentz is the most incompetent coordinator in America. On top of that, remember Iowa's racism scandal that got their strength coach (correctly) fired? Ferentz was implicated just as heavily in that, but faced no repercussions. Not even bullshit diversity training or anything.
So not only is he horrifically incompetent and a nepotism hire, he's also an asshole.
October 9th, 2022 at 10:15 PM ^
His Wikipedia page is a rough read. Dude makes $900K annually, which is not top dollar for offensive coordinators, but I bet he's the best paid of the 90-115th ranked offenses by a country mile. Also, some sketchy stuff from when he was in college, and frank concessions that he was awful at coaching running backs and quarterbacks. So, naturally, make him the OC.
Also, this "complementary football" thing is just rot. "No, no -- we're trying to suck on offense. Really helps out our defense." You know what else helps your defense? Scoring -- you should try it sometime.

I think (hope) was being facetious.
Obviously, context matters when the last 75 yards and 7 points were accumulated during garbage time when Michigan was half-assing it on D.
