Interesting QB situation to be in...

Submitted by Bigasshammm on

So this is my first and probably only board post on here. I've been waiting for a proper outlet to suggest this as it popped in my head about a week ago. I'm not computer savy and this may have been brought up somewhere else so I apologize if it has.

Anyway on to the content.

With Michigan going into this season with 3 somewhat viable options at starting Qb maybe they should take a different approach to things. We all know that Tate is talented but his ceiling isn't very high. He may have hit it already in fact but he still has great skills and can show great leadership at times. We've been hearing for weeks how Denard has progressed and should be taking the starting role this season. Follow that up with also hearing that Gardner is starting to come into his own and may truly be the future at the QB position. With all this information I think the coaches need to do one of 2 things.

Option 1: Stick to your guns and redshirt Gardner NO MATTER WHAT! Barring Michigan QB hating god showing his presence and taking out either Denard or Tate for any lengthy period of time there is really no reason to play Gardner regardless of how good he's shown he can be. The team does not need 3 QBs all in their second year or less with the program going into the future. I see RR going away from this move if he is desparate to save his job and tries everything to win.

Option 2: If you're not going to redshirt Gardner and are actually going to have him at QB some during the season then start making some other options available to get Denard on the field in other positions. I still think keeping him 100% at QB is a waste of his talents as he is clearly the most gifted athlete on the team. Tate is far capable of running the offense and if he were to split reps with Gardner then opposing defenses would have to respect both the QB position and wherever Denard lined up. This opens a large bag of tricks that can be employed and would greatly give the team other chances to win.

I don't see either of these happening and I see Denard taking the majority of the snaps with Tate doing the rest. Throw in a smattering of Gardner in there burning his redshirt. Then going into next season we see Tate probably put in his transfer as he will be relegated to 3rd string and the possibly new coach dealing with even more attrition.

In a perfect world I vote for option 1.

Begin the negbang as I'm sure this will entail.

not the ultimate authority. That is probably your sub-conscious telling you something there...what exactly I will let the others (who are going to tear this apart) tell you.

...a good idea, but it's not the direction the coaches are going with DRob.  There was talk from RichRod in the spring about getting Denard some practice elsewhere, but it hasn't played out that way.

That's not to say it isn't possible that there will be sets where Tate and DRob line up in the backfield or with one of them split out, but it's not likely to be a normal occurrence.

Bottom line: One of these two will be the starting QB on Sep 4. The other one may very well see significant action based on how things are progressing in the game.  The QB who starts on Sep 4 may not be the starting QB on Sep 11.  Even if that's the case, we're likely to see plenty of DRob and Tate in the first several weeks unless and until one of them shows himself to be the clearly better option.

By all rights, Devin should be destined for a RS season but that's not a given either.  If things go poorly early, you never know what may happen.

You're not really adding anything new or insightful to the usual, "OMGNARDDAWG! TATETRANSFERLOL!" QB discussions that have occurred ad nauseum. This is getting worse than the Lebron sweepstakes.

People around these parts are constantly pleading "Denard must be on the field!"

I don't necessarily disagree with this, but did he have any positive plays last year at other positions?  I know he was split out wide for a play or two during the OSU game and I think maybe one or two other games, but did he turn any of these plays into big gains?  (serious question)

I do agree Denard must be on the field, but I think it should be at the QB position.

Redshirting Gardner comes down to one thing: How far has Denard REALLY progressed. He has been slicing and dicing the second team D since the Spring, and I am pretty sure that will be by far the worse defense he will face this year.

I was watching the Illinois game from last year, and man, Tate had a rough second half. I do believe if Denard and Tate are struggling, we have no choice bu to get Devin some playing time.

At this point, I am not even considering redshirting him, just based on last year

I have a hard time understanding the argument that since RR has to go all out this season to keep his job, he will not redshirt DG.

I just don't think DG is prepared enough that redshirting him would prevent us from winning games (barring injury of course).

You say that Denard is "clearly the most gifted athlete on the team," and so we should play him elsewhere if DG gets QB time. But have we forgotten what Denard's performance at QB was like last year despite his athletic talent? What makes you think that DG is going to come in and be ready as a DECISION-MAKER more than Denard was? I think if we put another true freshman in at QB for significant snaps, we will continue to see the freshman mistakes that have haunted us the past two seasons.

This is guessing to a certain degree, but I think right now Devin is 10X more valuable than Denard was at this time last year (at the QB spot).  Denard was brought in as a 4-star athlete who wanted to play QB and didn't play spring ball.  Devin was a 5-star QB and as we all know has practiced with the team this spring.

I don't think Devin is ready to lead this team yet, but to equate him with Denard in his first fall camp doesn't seem right either.

The other part of that argument that I find funny is the assumption that RR doesn't always go all out, but that he will this year to keep his job.  From my perspective, he would play any player, in any game, if it meant the difference of winning or losing that single game.  I just think that's his competitive mindset.

but I would put Denard at center, and Tate in the slot.  Have Schilling take the snap from Denard (or pretend).  And run the annexation of Puerto Rico every play using Tate as a decoy.

With all of these assumptions on the starter is it too much to assume that we will see all three of these guys getting major reps in games for the next couple of years. We saw it last year. A multi-qb system is unconventional but I seriously doubt RR cares what people think is conventional.

Also, it's way too early to be putting out scenarios of who will be transfering/3rd string with a new coach. Hasn't our blood pressure spiked enough this offseason?

I think we first need to see if Denard and Tate stop making mistakes(as Sophomoires) before we can even address the Devin, Freshmen mistake thing.

Right now, I am curious as hell to see if the two Sophs have actually stopped the practice of making mistakes.

Man, do you all realize that has been the story of u of m since Henne?

I am so used to mistakes at quarterback I feel uncomforable when there are none.

Yikes!

Another thing I would like to mention is that I bet this board has given way more thought to the DG redshirt issue than the coaching staff has.

The reason being is that RR doesn't have to make a final decision at any point during the season.

I bet Michigan rolls into the UCONN game hoping to redshirt DG. Who wouldn't? He's a true freshman.

If things go perfectly, either Denard or Tate will establish themselves as the number 1, and we'll shred UCONN, ND, etc  with the backup QB seeing mostly meaningless snaps at the end of the game. DG would then redshirt, and all is well.

HOWEVER, if Tate or Denard get injured OR both fall flat on their faces (very unlikely), DG will be available and could come in. In this scenario I will be terrified as our answer to our two QBs underperforming will be to bring in a true freshman. Yikes!

There is no rule (to my knowledge) that says you have to declare a guy as redshirting at any point in the season. If he doesn't play at all, redshirt used. If he plays a certain amount, redshirt not available. Its as simple as that.

Regarding Tate and and Denard...but do you rember Tates was named "the Weapon of Choice" after the Spring 2009 game? He was unstoppable. Here take a look:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh13WiJZ7MM

We were sure we would have a ten win season.

What happened? Please help me to see that Denard is the second coming of Tate after the Spring 2010 game so I can believe this Fall will somehow be different

It's tough, but as die hard fans you just have to trust that the coaching staff will start the quarterback that gives us the biggest chance of being successful.  My gut feeling is Denard, but i'm going to put full trust in the coaching staff to make the right decision.   Whoever starts, I'm behind them 1000 percent.

I don't think I've ever wanted a Michigan football season to start faster than this one.  I am so sick of talking about this, I would rather hear about my girlfriend's day then talk about the QB's one more time.

Its funny that everyone is stressing over who should start between DG, Drob, and Tater but seriously people lets not forget a couple years back when our choices were Threet, Sheridan, or Feagin.  I'll take any of the current three, thanks.

I still think keeping him 100% at QB is a waste of his talents as he is clearly the most gifted athlete on the team.

So instead of putting the ball into guy's hands pretty much every play (60-70 snaps), where a broken play may end up a TD (see WMU), we move him to a position where he gets less than 20 times a game at best?  I don't follow how that's a waste of his talents.

Last year he was a year younger, a year less experienced, a year greener on the playbook, and banged up starting with Indiana.

I realize most of the excitement is about Denard this year, but Tate isn't finished here by a long shot.

^^this.   I don't understand people who say that Tate has reached his ceiling already. Will he improve physically/mechanically as much as Denard or Devin might? Probably not. However Tate has shown the ability to lead multiple 4th quarter comebacks and is almost as dangerous on broken plays on Denard(although he is more of the scramble to find open receiver type).  If Tate can learn to manage his gunslinger mentality a bit more, he could turn into an all-Big Ten level QB.  Denard may very well end up being the better QB of the two, but the demise of Tate has been greatly exaggerated.
