Interesting observations by Nick from MLive

Submitted by massblue on

Nick Baumgardner has several interesting observations on the team.  Here are a few that just blew my mind;

Nussmeier says an "explosive play" is either a 12-yard run or a 16-yard pass, by the way.

By Nussmeier's definition, Michigan had as many explosive plays (8) as it did tackles for loss allowed (8) on Saturday.

Michigan faced 19 third downs on Saturday ... average chain reading was 3rd and 9.2 ... 0.0% chance this offense ever wins with #s like that

At this point, I'm wondering if there's something wrong with Devin Gardner's arm. Zero zip on any of these throws, underthrew people all day

I said it after App game that DG is just floating his passes. Is he hurt?

Michigan ranks No. 8 nationally in total defense, No. 81 nationally in total offense.

And most of that offense came against worst defenses.

10 men on a punt return TD, four turnovers, 0 offensive TDs, 0 trips to the red zone. ... This is a poorly-coached football team. Period.

My dad suggested the same notion that Devin had to be hurt. I said no way but now I believe it.  Here's the scary thing: if he is so hurt that it affects their gameplan that much, how low must their confidence in Shane be if they still haven't decided to start him? (at least not up until now)

I was always an X-men fan growing up (obviously Wolverine was my favorite, so original, I know). There were several mutants that had tremendous power and abilities, they just didn't quite know how to harness them and use them for their benefit, until Professor X taught them.  I harken Shane to one of these mutants, he has amazing skills and potential, he just doesn't quite have full control and know how to use them effectively yet.

Morris is that kind of mutant, but 98 isn't? The talk was that he was a bright spot at the Manning camp, but he gets back to Michigan and he's a lost cause. How does that happen? That...seems to be coaching, or a lack of it. You ever check out how Beilein'll pace the sidelines, not looking at the court, but looking at the bench and talking to the players observing from the sidelines? He's teaching while live rounds are going off. When have we ever seen Hoke doing that? He and Nuss should be in 98's ear as soon as he comes out of the game--he and the other quarterbacks, wide receivers, linemen, whoever--teaching them in between series. Mattison's got the defense under control. Unless Hoke has trained the players to respond to hand claps, like flipping pigeons, the cheerleading needs to cease. He ain't managing the game, so what else is he doing that stops him from having these teaching moments?

I have to say that I have seen Nuss in Devin's ear, about everytime he gets off of the field. He seems to be trying to "teach" while the defense is on the field.

With regards to Hoke, I don't know if he can teach the offensive guys anything, because I really don't seem to get the feeling he believes he can help. Cheerleading seems to be his position on game day. Its not a good look from a fans perspective.

I would tend to (hope) and agree.  I think Shane rushes things too much and gets too anxious to make a play.  I think (and hope) that if he gets some more game time, he'll learn to slow down and avoid careless mistakes.

But on the other hand, I saw him a good dozen times at camps when he was a recruit and he's still making a lot of the same mistakes.  So who knows...

DG is the worst kind of broken. Mentally broken.
Three OC's in 5 years. A terrible Oline last year. Another Year of oline growing pains....during your fifth year. The year you were hoping to challenge for a big ten title. Fans booing you.
I'm thinking DG was hoping for a better 5 years than this.
If o know DG though he will somehow turn this into a positive. That's why we all love DG.

I bet OP was thinking: "I could make a thread using Nick B.'s observations to make the assertion that the team is poorly coached. They could use a new coach...hmmmmmm..."

How f'n novel.

This is only about the millionth thread to that end post game. At this stage, I think I find the new threads about how this team is poorly coached more annoying than the outcomes of questionable coaching/coaching decisions.

Something is definitely off with Devin. I don't know if he had an on the money throw all day. Even when the passing game was working, it was more heroic effort from the receivers than anything else. Even on relatively short passes, he's costing the offense YAC by not hitting guys in stride.

On his legs, he seems indecisive as well. Keeps plays alive but can't seem to out-athlete anyone once he crosses the line of scrimmage.

We've seen that he's certainly capable of better, so I don't know man.

Gardner is not hurt. He is scared of being hit, he rushes when he feels pressure, his mechanics have never been strong. His confidence is shit, has nothing to do with being injured.

Do you have some kind of inside hard information that the rest of us don't? It's possible it's only that, but based on how he looks it's also just as possible that he's injured somehow and/or it's a combination of both. At this point with the information that's out there it's impossible to be positive on what's going on.

I, for one, welcome you.

Your observations have always seemed intelligent and reasonable, particularly for a self-proclaimed ND guy.

I have plenty of issues and beefs with ND, wish them all the worst, delight in every misfortunate that comes their way, but you're okay.

Please continue to contribute.

!0 men is one thing, but damn it use the correct funking terms.  Michigan USES the spread punt formation.  They need to use the SHIELD PUNT FORMATION.   Do 10 seonds of research on the fucking subject.

If you want to "sound" knowledgable - use the right terms!

I am well aware of the difference between the two as I've coached football for 5 years now at the semi pro level.  There are however different names for almost everything in football.  I've heard both the shield, spread, and traditional punt formations called a variety of different names so getting that upset over terminology is a bit asinine if I say so myself.  I personally prefer to just call it what it is, a punt formation...one that Michigan does not use correctly and has no fucking clue how to change.

p.s.  thanks for the tip
