Husker fans aren't eager to go to Orlando

Nebraska fans have a reputation for being extremely devoted bowl travelers, but the embarrassment in the B1G title game (perhaps coupled with the fact that this is their second straight trip to Orlando) seems to be keeping them away this time.
Personally, I think the league needs some new bowl sites. Do we really need to send teams to Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville? Going to Florida all the time gets old. I miss the Holiday Bowl.

It seems like Rungnado Stadium would be a pretty sweet site for a bowl game.
December 28th, 2012 at 4:43 PM ^
The crowd would be equally split for each team and it would be a sell out, or else. People would be so happy when "their" team won they would be in tears....

the Big Ten has some pretty solid partnerships. I would like to see the Big Ten add another West Coast game (either Holiday Bowl in San Diego or Kraft Fight Hunger in San Francisco). But subbing out San Antonio, Nashville, & El Paso for Jacksonville, Houston, & Dallas was a win in my view.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:11 PM ^
but I would put San Antonio and Nashville above any of the other three.

Jacksonville is a skidmark on the underpants of society.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. I've been to San Antonio and it's a cool town, and although I've never been to Jacksonville, I've never heard anything good.
That said, Jacksonville might be better as a Big Ten bowl destination as it's closer to the schools and alumni bases. There are a lot of Big Ten alumni in Florida, and Jacksonville is driveable from many of the Big Ten states, whereas San Antonio is not.

Looking at the map, what other cities could host?
Denver seems like a missed opportunity. Yeah, it's a little cold, but it's usually warmer than people think. Highs in the next week range from 30 to 48.
If there are bowl games in Detroit and New York, why not Chicago and Boston. Weather, I know. But would you rather go to Orlando or Boston? It's not like Orlando is 85 degrees right now anyway.
Kansas City can be fun.

I'm not calling for new bowls to be started from scratch. As I said, I want the Holiday Bowl back. Our 3rd-place team used to go there. We played there in the 1984 and '94 seasons.
But if we were starting new bowls, I think Anaheim would be a good site. California seems underused as a bowl location.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:17 PM ^
Despite my obvious bias, I agree with this whole-heartedly. The Big Ten has tons of fans and alumni out here, and it's a more desirable place for young people to travel to than most cities in the Southeast.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
As someone who live in Kansas City, I can't really see it as a bowl destination. But I like your Denver idea... fun town, and great winter sports not far away.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:11 PM ^
An outdoor bowl in the snow at Soldier Field? Hell yes. "Players don't like it"? Bah. Get a sweet sponsor with gift cards to the Palm Steakhouse or something, give it some pomp and circumstance that makes the snow prestigious, and players will love it.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:26 PM ^
Also, I think there should be at least 3 bowls in Las Vegas. Who doesn't like going there? Tons of lodging, tons of other things to do, close to a lot of population, great weather and a place everyone loves to visit.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:54 PM ^
Does Las Vegas even have three football stadiums big enough to host a bowl game?
December 28th, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
Why do they need three stadiums? Play them all in the same stadium. Many stadiums have mulitple bowl games - off the top of my head Qualcomm in SD has the Poinsettia and Holiday Bowl, and the game going on right now is in the same stadium as the Capital One bowl.
As long as you have a day or two in between bowls, you're fine. In fact, you might get some fans to attend more than one of the bowls, which would help attendance.
December 28th, 2012 at 8:21 PM ^
Host minor bowls in the same stadiums as major bowls one or two days ahead of time. Work with hotels to create special discount weeklong packages. Offer tickets to both bowls for the same price as one (the more expensive one) when you book a weeklong stay. You can even sell tickets through hotel networks so the area tourism committee helps foot the bill for sales staff.

There certainly were a lot of Alabama fans at the Sugar Bowl last year. I think NO has three bowl games, all in the same stadium.
December 28th, 2012 at 6:46 PM ^
Hollis is working on a plan to play them simultaneously.

But there's already a bowl there, so obviously some do. There are big bowl games in New Orleans, Miami and LA where there is plenty of trouble to find, and we know this is all about money anyway.

The only thing is Vegas can get really cold at night during bowl season.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:52 PM ^
Chicago and Boston would be great. Relatively easy to get to by air, lots of attractions, even in the winter, and fans of teams from the South probably would be into the possibility of seeing real live snow.
December 28th, 2012 at 8:07 PM ^
I've heard a lot of people saying that the last couple of days.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:54 PM ^
... would be cool. I live here and winters are rainy, but not horrible (40-45 degrees). Plus it's a great city for a 3-5 day visit and you could also bundle it with a trip to Vancouver and Whistler for skiing if you want to extend to 7+ days.
That being said, 40-45 degrees is not Orlando.
December 28th, 2012 at 4:43 PM ^
And honestly, if they thought the Wisconsin game was bad, now they have to play a team with a far better defense and one that was one play away from getting to the national title game. Georgia will vent all of its frustration on Nebraska, and this game could be over by the half.
December 28th, 2012 at 4:57 PM ^
While I agree that the conference could use some new bowl sites, there's absolutely no sympathy for Husker fans. If the refs hadn't gift wrapped some games for them this year and the sports GODs given them 3 quarters against a Denardless Michigan team, they would currently be at a worse bowl game this holiday season.
Also, their embarrassment of the conference title game is on par with the endless times Tom Osborn ran up the score to 70+ points on opponents. The shoe is on the other foot now. Suck it up, cheer your team and enjoy a trip to Florida.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:24 PM ^
I don't hate Nebraska, but this is a gift for them. The reality of their season must be sinking in.
December 30th, 2012 at 12:31 AM ^
I hate Nebraska enough for both of us.
December 28th, 2012 at 5:52 PM ^
Yeah, but Osborne has been retired for fifteen years, and Nebraska got its comeuppance during the Callahan era. The Callahan era was arguably worse for them than the Rich Rod era was for us, so any dues they had to pay have been paid in full.
December 28th, 2012 at 8:08 PM ^
when he had his 2nd and 3rd stringers in and were running the ball every play? Tell them to fall down? Husker fans aren't pissed at Wisconsin for running up the score, they're pissed at the team for blowing.

"I'm moving to Florida in August."
Have fun with that.
As much as winter sucks in the Midwest, summer in Florida is absolutely brutal. FYI, summers last about 5 months in Florida.
December 29th, 2012 at 10:57 AM ^
While people were complaining to me about 100+ degree temps and high humidity in MI this Summer, it was never above 93 degrees here on the Gulf Coast with a daily shore breeze, moderate humidity (the sun burns it off), and no bugs. Those who complain about Florida Summers live too far from the beach.

Despite the name, the Chick-fil-A Bowl is a pretty good one. Probably above all of the Big Ten bowls save the Rose and Cap1.
