Huff Update Post McGary BullSh*t

Submitted by CaliUMfan on

I just spoke with Coles father. He was very excited about the McGary news. He expressed that he feels bad for McGary and that "unfortunate situation" but he is excited for Cole to get that offer. He spoke with coach Jordan for about an hour last night and coach Jordan told him what we all assumed which is that with McGary out, Cole will have an offer regardless of what Aubrey Dawkins decides (it appears Cole was in line for an offer anyway if Dawkins committed to Dayton).

I told him that Cole seems like the prototypical John Belien player and he told me that Coach Jordan said Cole is what the coaching staff looks for and calls "80/40 guys." That's 80 percent from the line and 40 from 3. Coles dad expressed how it's hard not to get excited just seeing that block M with all the tradition behind it.

Coles dad said that they have only been in contact with coach Jordan and haven't heard from Belien directly yet but they understood that was because they were still not sure if Cole was getting an offer until very recently.  As we know, Michigan told him they only offer in person but he will get his offer when he visits which he will now be scheduling.

There are a few other tidbits about each school and coach that I am not sure he would be ok with me sharing so I will keep those to myself but I would not expect him to commit until he has taken all 4 visits.

This part is pure speculation but after talking to Coles dad, I would say Michigan is a slight favorite once they offer.

Also, Roger is going with Cole on his visits so the updates will be sparse since he will only be at work a handful of days for the next couple of weeks.

Edit:

I said this in a comment below but I thought it should go here as well. Cole does not have any interest in aquiring a waiver to play immediately. He wants to take the year to get in the wieght room and put on weight/increase his vertical, etc. Coach Sanderson is a big reason why he is interested in Michigan and I did a good deal of talking up the strength and conditioning program to Coles dad.

I'll also add that Coles dad seems really excited about the prospect of Cole going to Michigan and I think I can say with some confidence that if it were up to him, Cole would definitely end up there.

Great.  We didnt hear from you on the Huff post yesterday so we wondered if his dad muffled you haha.

Yes per the Freep story yesterday Huff's AAU coach basically said "it's Michigan" if he gets an offer so unless something goes very wrong here in the next 2 weeks I count Huff as a serious lean towards being a Michigan man.  Thanks again for your insider views.

OP, we are in mourning right now...we don't want any good news. we just want more news about how fucking awful our o-line is, how lame the NCAA's rules are and how Mitch would have returned.

For god sakes OP, for god sakeesssssssss

In a good way that he was excited by the McGary news.  I definitely needed that after a terrible morning, and it seems like Huff would be a great addition!

It is situations like this one where we see how fortunate we are that the tendrils of the MGoWorld are prtty much everywhere. Huff would be a great addition certainly, although it is pretty much impossible as a Michigan fan to like the background behind what made this particular scholarship available, of course. In any case, it is difficult to not like the general direction of this team under Beilein, so there is definitely that.

A starting five of Walton, LeVert, Irvin, Chatham, and Huff w/ Donnal, Wilson, and Albrecht off the bench being a team that could become dangerous come tournament time. Beilein is one of the best coaches around, I have faith in him to keep us competitive even in a " transition year." Shoot, I like that we have reached a level where we can talk about a transition year. Hail Beilein.

If this were actually the case he would not be considering Michigan. He was frustrated with Nevada using him primarily as a post player. Michigan plans to use him as a 3/4. At least thats what they are promising him.

He will definitely not come here if he is going to play the 5.  He left Nevada because they were playing him at the 4, he can play that here because our 4 is basically a 3, but the 5 is different.

Huff won't be a 5, naturall or unnaturally.  He is going to be a 3/4 combo forward if he comes here.  He left in theory because he didnt want to play 4 but that has been "corrected" since then to be that he didnt want to play with his back to the basket which is what Nevada wanted him to do more of - so his objections to the 4 are probably not as strenous as they were first made out to be.  But he is not a 5.  Nor available next year.

He sounds like he'd be a very nice addition for a team, and I appreciate the OP's info.  That said, Michigan will have no open scholarships for 2015 if Dawkins and Huff both commit.

Michigan could not offer Bielfeldt a fifth year next year.  We don't know what the future holds for Hatch.  We have to assume that Caris and maybe Irvin will go pro and that someone else will be banned from NCAA sports for life for drinking ginger beer.  But that's a lot of uncertainty as far as scholarship availability, and Michigan could really use a true center in the 2015 class.  Adding one or more of the Jalens, Grandstaff, and/or McQuaid would be nice too.

Yes all these losses in 1 year leads to a very unbalanced class.  Obviously Hatch is a wildcard and Caris I don't see anyway he comes back so that is 1 scholarship and I assume in 12 months they will be moving Hatch to academic - could be wrong of course.

But yes we are taking so many scholarships up this year it is very unbalanced... but I have no problem with Huff.  If you can add a guy who is NCAA experienced with 40% 3 PT shooting from the 3 versus a question mark freshman I'd take the experienced 3.  Huff would be the equivalent of getting an experienced 4 star for 2 years in terms of production - and he is going to be a rare upperclassmen on a team needing some.

Dawkins is the one I guess you ask:  do you take him or bank the scholarship for 2015?  Obviously the staff says take him, but the fan base may say leave that scholarship open for a 'better' prospect in 2015.

Yes.  He would grade to be a 4 star right now  in production IMO.  Plus an upperclassmen 4 star.

If I told you there was a 4 star combo forward out there who by his junior year would shoot 45% from the field and 40% from 3, and is a 82% FT shooter who rebound 5.4 per game and you dont have to suffer through his learning curve as a freshman.... you'd say bring it  to me.   He is an immediate RS JR from day 1 in our program.

i assumed this was an article from HuffPo on the McGary situation.  delighted to hear about cole huff, although he can't play next year.  still would be a good addition.

so.... we lose...

Morgan, Stauskas, Robinson, Horford, and now McGary.

WHAT

THE

FUK

I don't know who is the bigger meatball....Horford  or McGary....  did Horford really decide to transfer, fully knowing McGary is leaving?   I gotta think not...

Agreed. Especially with Horford trying to make it not about Mitch. But I wish he would have said something like "It doesn't matter to me if Mitch stays or leaves, I still want to transfer." Also, now you start to wonder if Mitch was planning to stay at that point, since the team appealed the suspension

This does nothing to patch the gaping hole that is our 5 next year.  Honestly, what team loses 2 non-starting, non-senior centers in a single offseason?  We lost more players with eligibility left than Kentucky.  Just unreal.

I wonder if this is also a part staff fail, not reminding Mitch of the consequences of the upcoming NCAA testing...  I get it, that you can only hold a hand so long...all Im saying is if they didn't remind him here of the temptation and to avoid it....

alum96

I disagree.  Beilein had the WHOLE team tested prior to the Big 10 tourney per the Yahoo story.   If that is not a message I dont know what else you can do.   This test he failed came within a few weeks of that (3?).  If you cannot remember a lesson for 3 weeks you deserve to fail - not the staff;'s fault.

Izzo has in his career at MSU if I recall correctly.

It makes you wonder what Horford was thinking with his decision to transfer. Maybe it was all the pressure from family and advisors but he couldn't have more of a chance to shine than here unlees Donnel is absolutely amazing.

Let's hope.

At this point, any good news is helpful. I can't wait to see just how next year's basketball team comes together or falls apart.

The NCAA has found that Coach Jordan's call to Mr. Huff was 0.002 seconds longer than allowed under a well known NCAA rule which applies to calls from schools whose name starts with the letter M, and who have had a player whose name also starts with M banned for failing a pot test in the same month as a lunar eclipse.  As such, Cole has been banned from ever touching a basketball again, and Coach Jordan has been sent to Siberia and fed to a tiger.  (It is believed that Putin worked closely with the NCCA on the last part.)

Since it is a well known rule, I guess they got what they deserved.
