Huff Update Post McGary BullSh*t

Submitted by CaliUMfan on

I just spoke with Coles father. He was very excited about the McGary news. He expressed that he feels bad for McGary and that "unfortunate situation" but he is excited for Cole to get that offer. He spoke with coach Jordan for about an hour last night and coach Jordan told him what we all assumed which is that with McGary out, Cole will have an offer regardless of what Aubrey Dawkins decides (it appears Cole was in line for an offer anyway if Dawkins committed to Dayton).

I told him that Cole seems like the prototypical John Belien player and he told me that Coach Jordan said Cole is what the coaching staff looks for and calls "80/40 guys." That's 80 percent from the line and 40 from 3. Coles dad expressed how it's hard not to get excited just seeing that block M with all the tradition behind it.

Coles dad said that they have only been in contact with coach Jordan and haven't heard from Belien directly yet but they understood that was because they were still not sure if Cole was getting an offer until very recently.  As we know, Michigan told him they only offer in person but he will get his offer when he visits which he will now be scheduling.

There are a few other tidbits about each school and coach that I am not sure he would be ok with me sharing so I will keep those to myself but I would not expect him to commit until he has taken all 4 visits.

This part is pure speculation but after talking to Coles dad, I would say Michigan is a slight favorite once they offer.

Also, Roger is going with Cole on his visits so the updates will be sparse since he will only be at work a handful of days for the next couple of weeks.

Edit:

I said this in a comment below but I thought it should go here as well. Cole does not have any interest in aquiring a waiver to play immediately. He wants to take the year to get in the wieght room and put on weight/increase his vertical, etc. Coach Sanderson is a big reason why he is interested in Michigan and I did a good deal of talking up the strength and conditioning program to Coles dad.

I'll also add that Coles dad seems really excited about the prospect of Cole going to Michigan and I think I can say with some confidence that if it were up to him, Cole would definitely end up there.

I am a HUGE Caris fan, but I just don't get why people assume he will go to the NBA next year. I mean I hope he does, but what did he do this year to prove he is NBA worthy. Plenty of wings all over the nation put up his numbers/efficiency, not to mention have better handles. Caris had about 20 VERY ill advised turnovers at critical points this year, trying to over dribble and do too much, I know thats easily correctable. He has length going for him physically but not much else. I love the kid and hope he does well enough to go pro, but I just don't see it by next year. But who knows, I thought Manny, Darius, and GRIII should stay too. Hopefully he does get drafted on the merit of his play and not just from the reputation of our staff deveolping talent at an exponential rate, I suppose those two go hand in hand though.

EDIT: Oops, wrong thread...

He is already being mocked anywhere from #5 to #20 in next year's draft and is a guy who can dribble drive/create which the NBA is all about.  He is a 6'6 and a decent defender. You see Caris every day (as we all do) as UM fans and see the negatives.  As I/we watch the NCAA tourney you see very few players who can create on their own.  Look at how effective Napier was in the tourney - he is one of the few guys who can actually create for himself, if he was 6'6 he'd be a lottery pick.

Guy makes turnovers - yep.  He also makes very heady plays such as stripping Stokes in tourney, blocking Randle in tourney, being half a fingernail away from blocking the 3 pointer vs UK, getting a crazy rebound vs OSU in closing moments in BTT, getting another crazy rebound vs UK on Jordan Morgan's last putback.  You don't teach those sort of things - players either are like that or they are not like that, it is hard to measure.  Caris to me is a poor man's Victor Oladipo and that cat went second overall after the year prior being a nobody.  I see Caris in the 12-20 spot in the draft next year.

"80% from the line and 40% from the 3" had me confused because I am an aging meathead that took took many shots to the head while playing football"

"Taking 80% from the line and 40% from 3 is 120%" I says to myself.  And then the part of my brain that still functions propertly told me it's shooting percentage, not a break down of which shots to take.

Glad I cleared that up for myself.

There is zero chance of this as Cole has no interest in trying to get a waiver. He intends to sit out next year. He wants the year to change his body a bit (put on weight). Coach Sanderson is a big reason why he likes Michigan. I did a good deal of talking up camp sanderson to his dad.

Why does mcgary have anything to do with huff ? Mitch would leave after next year anyway so why does huff care ? I don't understand ?

We only had one scholarship left and have an offer out to Dawkins.  There would not have been any room for Huff if Mitch came back and Dawkins committed.  Now he'll visit and almost certainly get an offer, at which point I think there's a great shot we land him.

I like your edit - it sounds like a mature young man who really thinks he can go to the NBA/Europe and doesnt want to take shortcuts to get there.  I am unsure why he would be allowed a waiver either way.

So with today's news let us know OP when the official visit begins.  Let's tie this up.  Sounds like he will go to all 4 schools just to be perfunctory.   We all know how this ends ;)
