How Are You Getting Through The Offseason?

Submitted by HenneAndTheJets on June 2nd, 2022 at 10:37 AM

I don't know about any of you, but I've been jonesing for football content harder than I usually do around this time of the year. With the unlikely success of last year's team and the potential (particularly on offense) of the 2022 team, I haven't been able to stop thinking about Michigan football.

Given that there's only so much content to go around on the upcoming season, I needed to find another way to fill the void, so I've made the decision to go back and watch condensed versions of every game from every season since I became a die-hard fan. Unfortunately for me, my fandom started in 2007. I just finished the 2010 season and I think watching the Rich Rod defenses unlocked some trauma I must have buried deep down, BUT it does make me a lot more grateful about our current situation.

This exercise got me thinking, what crazy things have the MGoBlog folks been doing to get through this long offseason?

This morning? I'm enjoying the weather. The NW Lower Peninsula of Michigan has a California climate at the moment.

I mean that in a good way (clear, dry, low 60s, very slight breeze).

It would be harder to have the off-season during the winter.

Take it from me. I used to get worked up about the off-season. I'd buy Lindy's magazines, study rosters, and analyze each game in my head.

It's not worth it. Things are out of your control. Just enjoy the beautiful spring/summer/fall and it'll get here when it does.

I used to wish time away so bad for the season. Don't be like Leo.

I'm sick with Influenza Type A which is in the process of turning into an ear infection. Can't hear anything out of my left ear. Couldn't get in to see my doctor this week and the walk in clinic is closed here in town. I'm debating if it's worth going to the ER for some stupid antibiotics

So I'm getting through the off-season by complaining about everything

Other than that I just do summer stuff until fall is neigh.

1) building a chest-of drawers for my son before he moves to Utah for grad school

2) typical yard work

3) golf

4) family trips (couple reunions we do every year, couple weekends at a lake house)

5) concerts. Saw Tool (again) a couple months ago and am going to see the Black Keys in Sept

6) grilling food

I have an exceptionally mediocre golf game I'm pairing with recovering from a back injury and a swing change. On the upside my tour of the local woodlands to find my ball means I'm good at spotting poison oak, poison ivy and all manner of wilderness irritants

Wife just booked a trip to Italy/Netherlands for the first two weeks so researching how to watch the first two games. Amsterdam should be easy but Cinque Terre might be difficult.

It will be impossible to watch the Hawaii game in Europe as the game starts at 2 am local time.  I would wake up early the next morning and watch the highlights.

btw/ I love Cinque Terre.  My best memory there was that a bunch of teenagers were playing a high level game of water polo and they let my 10 year old son play in the game for about 2 minutes, thrill of a lifetime for him.

Instead of waiting for football I'm waiting for my contractor to finish my basement. He installed the plumbing for the bathroom and wet bar, next up electrical.

Wow, I actually enjoy spending time away from Michigan football/basketball over the summer, that time away helps me enjoy the actual seasons. Going back to watch all of those games would just burn me out, but to each their own.

Traveling helps me through the downtime.

Los Olivos wine country tonight and tomorrow night followed by secluded house near Palm Springs through the weekend.

Next weekend Boston, Portland, Maine, Portsmouth, Burlington, Montreal 10 day trip.

July Michigan lakehouse for a week.

August Whistler, Canada for 4 days.

Then Voila! it's football season.

Mostly just killing the fatted calf, listening to electric music, plugging into the faithless, and fighting our parents in the streets to find out who's right and who's wrong.

why limit it to 2007 forward?  Take time and go back through each preceeding year (2006 is an especially good place to start) and become even MORE steeped in the tradition.  Youtube awaits -

here is a good place to start:

Yes.  It has been rough.  When the There Are posts started, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.  I have my garden and a great local arcade with 300+ arcade games and 200+ pinball machines for $15 all day.  They keep the AC at 65 all day, so I go there when I run out of things to do.  Stranger Things was a nice surprise and I started a new series of books that will get me through the next 93 days.

Okay...does that arcade have these pinball machines:

The Sopranos ("Good earner...this kid can fuckin' earn.")

The Addams Family ("The...ma...mushka!")

Theatre of Magic

The Funhouse ("Ride the Ferris Wheel!")

And the greatest pinball machine ever made...

Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure

If so, I'm moving there, possibly in with you, so I can hit that place every day.

I've been living through my 14 and 12-year old daughter's softball teams. The middle school season ended last week and my oldest's season will likely be over Saturday. MHSAA districts start up this weekend, and I doubt they make it past the 10AM game.

To be perfectly honest, I hope next season takes a while to get here. I had eager anticipation for the 1998 football season, coming of a national title and a top ranked recruiting class coming in. After the third quarter of the season opener, I was wishing it was still mid-July. I'd suggest enjoying this time as B1G champs as long as the title is applicable.

I had the opposite reaction, I think. Because we achieved a great deal last year I'm not looking forward to this year as much as normal. I know the excitement will come in time, but I'm gravely concerned about the defense. We do have a cakewalk for a schedule except for @OSU and a trip to Iowa on October 1.
