I dunno, it could be that as a CEO-type HC he knows he has to hire good coordinators. That'd be the point of being that kind of coach.

I wasn't insulting him, I was genuinely giving a reason as to why the two situations would probably be different. I'm sure Hoke has input into both the offense and the defense, but its different from a guy like Harbaugh.

In all seriousness this would probably be a great career move for him. I can think of no better way for him to be forced to understand tempo than to coach against it every day in practice

Or maybe he'll step in and change the way they practice on the defensive side of the ball. A little less obsession with tempo, more attention to detail, getting it right before you get it fast.

Something they're doing there now isn't working; they need someone from the outside to come in and tell them what it is.

What a joke. I'd hire a real DC then hire Hoke to be the DL coach.  He has proven that he can recruit pretty well and coach up a mean DL.  Don't take the guy outside his comfort zone.

There were plenty of head coaching jobs out there and no one hired him. Even Ball State had an opening and hired Mike Neu. Hoke's days as a head coach might be over.

PS-Rocky Long has done well with SDSU since Hoke left. They went 11-3 this year, including an 8-0 conference record.

Throw in some fat jokes, jokes about clapping, comments about him apparently knowing nothing about football, and then some comments about him only knowing anything about DL and nothing else. Probably get some "execute" jokes as well. And all the other played out jokes. But hey, this is what it do on MGoBlog, we get jiggy with it like these jokes are the bomb, son! Fo shizzle we should all chillax with our played out jokes. This place is about 5 original thoughts that get repeated until long after they should be dead

Oh, so you can still find old jokes funny, but no one else can?

Hypocrite. Elitist. Hope the view's nice from your ivory tower.

BTW, the reason people bag on Hoke is because he was handed this job on a silver platter and failed miserably, played lackey to Dave Brandon for four years, didn't display an ounce of backbone in public whenever it was necessary and then this year proceeded to make numerous dumb comments regarding the football team. And that's without getting into anything to specific. I suspect there will be comments directed at Hoke for years and a lot of them are well-deserved.

I know you still have it in your skull that he's a rotund, jolly Jesus, but he's not.

Defending Borges against an onslaught of inaccurate criticisms (among some legit ones) wasn't a joke when I brought up Borges over two years ago. I defended him then, and didn't bring him up at all in this thread, you did. So the joke - that wasn't a joke - wasn't made by me at any recent time, it was brought forth by you. You made the joke you criticized. Impressive. So not sure how that makes me a hypocrite or elitist, sounds like you're just throwing around names that don't fit the bill. Seems you're willing to do that with a lot of things. Hoke failed as a head coach at Michigan. Yup. He got fired and deserved to be. People can bag on him for that all they want, I find it annoying but fine, it happened. If they bring up a joke that's clever, hell, I don't even mind. The rest, particularly the jokes, have been repeated ad-nauseam. Your one-sided view of the situation and repetitive attacks on the man go in the bin of repeated jokes, not mine. I didn't and rarely do bring him up, while you perpetually participate in nearly anything that can be swayed to Hoke-slander.

Ugh, nothing is worse than someone who doesn't get the joke.

And let's be real, REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL clear. I rarely bag on Hoke - look at this thread! Where is the bagging outside of this little convo?! - but he bought himself five years of scorn when he claimed "I would have went for it" after the Sparty game.

Those are the words of a man who deserves five years of clap gifs and headset jokes.

So what?  He's been a HC before and was an excellent D-Line coach.  Don't most DC's start out as position coaches?

I'd say he's probably well qualified to be a DC.  Especially at a school where defense was optional in the past.

For me, this move is not so much Hoke going from HC to DC. Instead, I'm looking at this as a great DL coach being promoted into a DC position. It happens all the time.

Good luck, coach Hoke!

Hoke is a great recruiter and D line coach.  No evidence if he is a good DC or not, but his defenses and D-lines were always good.  The guy obviously has the knowledge.

For multiple reasons (entertainment among them) that *really* needs to happen. D-line is a longstanding RichRod weakness (recruiting and all else). Brady could help fix that and enjoy the Arizona weather.

They should hire him as a DL coach with a focus on recruiting.  He was a great recruiter and did great at getting/coaching SDE, DT, and NT types.
