Hoke's Staff

Submitted by michgoblue on

So, rather than discussing whether everyone on this board is "all in" or whether people have a right to criticize the hire, I wanted to start a more constructive discussion:

Who do we think will end up on Hoke's staff?

We already know the OC - Borges.  If his team's offense against Navy is any indication, then he runs a fairly dynamic (albeit "old school") offense that should be able to fit Denard and company.

It looks like he will also bring his S&C guy who, while not possessing wolves, is pretty highly regarded.  I loved Barwis, but in 3 years, I didn't think that our players looked any faster or stronger or were less susceptible to injury.  Not a criticism on Barwis, but I think that the hype maching went out of control because of his awesome personality.

So, who else do people think will join?

I am expecting Loeffler, but that is purely based upon his prior employment here and the fact that he is well-regarded.

Any thoughts?  Inside info?

If Loeffler were to come back to Michigan wouldn't this be his 3rd coaching stint as the QB's coach?

It'd be his second.  His career trajectory:

1993-97 - player (suffered career-ending shoulder injury and served as a quasi-assistant)

1998-99 - grad assistant

2000-01 CMU QB coach

2002-07 U-M QB coach

2008-10 Florida QB coach

2011 - ?

I'm actually very interested to see who he brings in to run the defense.   A bunch of former M staffers available in Heater and Austin or even Bedford at Louisville.   Or could we swing for the fences and go after Randy Shannon?      My bet is that we go back to Blue, but Shannon would be awesome in my book.

Sam Webb thinks that Bedford will stay with Strong.  I think Heater or Austin will help recruit Florida.  I agree Shannon would be very good.  Loefller with his spread experience from the last couple of years plus his past QB success would be nice.

A good way to become a "Michigan Man" is to get hired with no affiliation to the program as coordinator or assistant. I'm all for Randy Shannon.  He's a good coach and an awesome recruiter.  Having him would secure Dallas Crawford and would keep the souther Florida recruiting alive for years to come.

I am actually ignorant to the type of defense Shannon runs. After watching some clips of SDSU games and watching th NY Jets, TCU, and others like them, I'd like to see an aggresive defense with multiplr looks of 3 and 4 man fronts with plenty-o-blitzes. High risk/high reward. It seemed as if our defense just kind of sat back and waited until the play came to them. Maybe I'm wrong?

I'm not positive since it's been several years since he was a DC, but I seem to remember Shannon's defenses being almost exclusively 4-3 and using a lot of man coverage with the corners. And he had some good corners, like Philip Buchanon, Mike Rumph, etc., not to mention safeties like Ed Reed and Kenny Phillips and Sean Taylor.

Hard to say if it was talent or the development of said talent that made their defenses so good, but either way, I'd take Shannon in a heartbeat.

If brings some nice blitz packages with him, I'll be aboard. I doubt it happens though. Hoke might not want someone on staff with a bigger "name" than him on the staff to serve as a distraction to and already ADD infected fanbase.

I have a feeling his brother, Jon Hoke, will be joining the staff as well. Jon has been the Chicago Bears' (woot!) DB coach the last two years, and had the same job with the Texans for 7 years prior. From 99-2001 he was the DC at Florida and was also an assistant HC. Unclear what exactly he would do, but Angelique Chengelis asked Brady if he had ever coached with his brother and his reply was "no, but we might."

I would have to imagine that Jon Hoke would be a great recruiter, given his stint as Florida DC and 10 years in the NFL.  Recruits love the NFL coaches, so this could be a great pick-up.

Aside from Shannon (probably not happening) Hoke the second woud probably be the best pick-up as DC.

Jon Hoke does not like to recruit. He had a chance to go with Spurrier to SC but opted for the pro game so he didn't have to recruit anymore.

As far as what I heard ( A former coach here being my source) that Borges and his RB coach Jeff Hecklinski are coming. Fred Jackson has an NFL offer, but Hoke was likely to move on anyway.

Soup and Lefty are likely to come back----not a done deal yet though.

His TE/ST coach, Dan Ferrigno appears to be coming---not a done deal though.

I haven't heard much about his OL coach (Darrell Funk) or his his LB coach ( Mark Smith) coming, but they have followed Hoke from Ball St. to SDSU, so I don't see why they wouldn't be coming this time either.

A former coach at Michigan would like to see Austin come back, but with Jon Hoke likely to be a part of the staff, I don't see Austin taking anything other than a DC position here. He is currently out of work though, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of job openings for a DC, so we'll see.

I have heard Keith Gilmore being tossed around as a DL coach as well, but I am not sure why Brady wouldn't end up doing it.
