Heisman - Did Championship weekend impact voting?

Submitted by Amazinblu on December 5th, 2022 at 11:39 AM

Any thoughts on the Heisman?

A week ago, it seemed like Caleb Williams at USC won the Heisman after their game against ND.  Of course, that was before an egg was laid against Utah.

Corum did not play.  The Buckeyes and Bama were spectators on Saturday.  Duggan and TCU came up short.  Bennett and Georgia were solid in a win over LSU - but, it doesn’t seem like he was in much consideration.

Who will, or should, win the Heisman?  Your thoughts?

It'll be Caleb Williams. He didn't lay an egg against Utah. He got injured on a first-half scoring run and absolutely lost his mobility after that. All in all you can't say he had a good game, obviously, but it's not like he was "exposed" as an average player or anything.

He deserves it before that game, and he deserves it now. And if I were advising a NFL team that needed a quarterback, I'd encourage them to leap at him at the first opportunity. He's a stud.

Agree about Caleb Williams winning it. i read a couple of days ago that over 60% of the votes were already in and he was the heavy favorite going into the weekend. No one really impressed enough this weekend to challenge Williams so I have to believe he's the winner in a year where there really wasn't a clear-cut choice

I think Williams still wins.  He threw for 3 TD and 350+ yards with a bad finger on Friday night.  Losing Corum really hurt those last 3 games but could you imagine if Edwards was getting this many carries early in the season?  Michigan was lucky to have Edwards as a "backup".

I really like Corum, but I don't think he would have won the Heismann even if he had stayed healthy -- unless he ran for like 200+ yards with 2 touchdowns in each game (and each game was close).

Michigan fans were slightly deluded about his chances, I think. Corum was third in the Big Ten in rushing through 11 games (that is, even if you don't count the Ohio State game) and there were four Big Ten rushers with over 100 attempts who ran for more per attempt than he did (including Donovan Edwards, by the way -- and yes, his stats were heavily influenced by the Ohio State and Purdue games, but why should be be punished for being fantastic in those games?)).

Again, I understand counter-arguments to those factors, but ... that's just in the Big Ten! And several of those other running backs didn't have the benefit of our offensive line.

Corum is awesome, and he may well be the best running back in the Big Ten. Hell, he may well be the best running back in the country. But he didn't seem ... transformative, to me. And ... look at how our running game (and team) coped when he went down. Meanwhile, look at what happened to USC with an injured Caleb Williams.

i found it a little odd that Bennett wasn't in consideration, even if he was 4th or 5th in line, after the last two weekends.... he could be the dark horse.

Duggan might have lost, but if he didn't put on a Heisman worthy effort in that game, I don't know who did....  and prior to that game, I think he had the second best odds to win it.

Nick Saban thinks it should be Bryce Young because all of his incompletions this season were close to being catches. In addition, he would be favored to star in more Dr. Pepper commercials than the other hopefuls. He will share his full opinion during a nationally televised interview that pre-empts Monday Night Football. It will be sponsored by Kleenex tissue.

I'm surprised that Bennett seems to be getting zero attention.

I know he doesn't have the gaudy stats of the QBs who play in more pass-oriented offenses, but I would have thought that a QB who's led Georgia to a 27-1 record over the past two seasons, with one national championship already in the bag and a good bet for another would be getting at least enough buzz to make it to the ceremony.

When was the last year like this where it feels like there is no truly deserving Heisman? Between injuries and players choking down the stretch, it feels like everyone is like "well, I guess we give it to this guy?"

Should win: Duggan or Corum (both made their teams significantly better and Duggan started as the back-up)

Will win: Probably Williams (I don't like system QBs winning, but he is a dual threat and takes lots of hits)

Who should be getting more pub: Rising (despite the losses he made that O go), still Hooker (he made UT what they were this year), Marvin Jr (despite being largely shut down in his most recent game)

I love me some Corum, but how much better did he make Michigan? We seemed to cope just fine without him these past two games. That's a credit to our system, of course -- and a small sample size -- but I don't see any evidence that we depended on him for our success this year to the extent USC depended on Caleb Williams or Utah depended on Rising.

Edwards didn't start seeing the holes and showing patience while blocks set up in front him until mid-season, by which time Blake was a clear workhorse.  What he was doing pushing piles and breaking ankles are both lightning and thunder in one back.  He did some very special things and I'd argue they very much depended on him until JJ and the Don became the guys they were in Cbus.
