Harbaugh Presser on BTN 2:25pm
Just caught a program alert on BTN saying there was a press conference coming up at 2:25pm
Mod edit: Update via Mocha Cub. Posbang him here:
**I took some notes to post here for those that couldn't watch the news conference. Picked a random response on the first page so they wouldn't get buried on one of the later pages of this thread. This isn't all quotes, had to do some short-hand notes/paraphrasing to keep up...apologize in advance for any typos or names incorrectly spelled**
QB competition?
Been very good from day 1. Play/competition very good, been improving daily/weekly. All QBs playing at very high level
Do you know starting QB? Will you say before game on Saturday?
Yes they know, they will say before Saturday. I didn’t say I was going to say it before YOU on Saturday.
Jake/Chris on being captains:
2 of the hardest workers, both have great way of being good teammates. Build up other guys around them and make themselves smaller, which makes them big in the eyes of their teammates. Talk/Coach the young players well. Caught Jake helping the young TE’s on several occasions. Chris gives advice to the young defensive lineman (specifically mentioned Ron and Rashan). Captains were voted on by the players. Coach’s votes/freshman votes did not count. That’s why it’s a great honor and means so much.
When you have several worthy candidates for QB, what helps make decision?
All the guys haven’t played in the games in terms of experience. Each has game experience, but here, game experience, want to see the things that will really translate to the games in terms of moving the offense, converting 3rd downs, getting team in end zone, avoiding mistakes that hurt drives and avoid turnovers. Those above all on the list have been what’s been evaluated.
With the addition of Biff Poggi, what do you anticipate his role to be?
No little people, everyone has a role. We all have things that we’re good at and not so good at. Everyone does a little and it adds up to a lot. Has found that to be the case on good, great, championship teams. Football-wise, he’s a line coach at heart and has a great love/affection for it. Biff is good at everything across the board. Trusted agent and known friend.
Bredeson still have a shot at the LT spot?
Yeah everybody is in the mix. Unique thing about college fb is there’s no preseason or warm-up games. Practice/competition rages on. Want guys to put themselves in the position to be ready when called upon. Ben is very close, I wouldn’t anticipate any not playing. He’s acquitting himself very well right now.
Advantage for Hawaii to have worked out some of their kinks or bigger advantage to have film on them first?
They have a very capable rb, qb, good football team. It will come down to when we play good, we’re darn tough to beat. When we don’t, we’re susceptible to be beat. I think that will be the case as well.
What other true frosh will knock on the door to get playing time?
With everything that our frosh have going on, being in summer school. Great way to get their feet under them and get some credits and getting to know the landscape. The rigor at the U of M. Build a great foundation for themselves academically. At football practice, that was the only part of the day they were involved in football (weren’t involved in classroom portion). Wanted to see what they could do athletically, run, catch, track the ball, play with vision, etc. We thought there were quite a few players tracking to be in the 2/3-deep. Last week been catching them up more on the schemes. Thinks they will play in the games soon and there will be a good number of them. David Long covered a go-route in yesterday’s practice as good as it could possibly be covered. From press coverage to the point when the ball got to the receiver, it’s as good as could have been covered. Competitive waters have been boiling.
Do the QBs know who the starter is?
Yes Ben Gedeon, went from role player to this is his defense…? Great player, worker, he’s a football player. Authority figure? That was your word, not mine. That’s not a word that comes to my mind.
No depth chart yet, does that mean there’s still competition for the positions, is that a good thing this close to the season?
I always thought of that as a good thing. Iron sharpening iron. Very good thing that’s written in the bible, from the word of God
Asked about Kaep/anthem?
I acknowledge his right to do that. I don’t respect the motivation or the action.
This time last year still a lot of unknowns, how has that differed this year & with expectations, are they meet-able?
That discussion has been raging on and we’re looking forward to having at it. Can’t wait to watch guys compete
With schedule starting how it is (implied weakness of schedule starting out) is it hard not to look forward?
Football is rough sport, don’t want to show lack of respect towards opponents each week. Very respectful approach for each and every game we play.
Will Kenny do all 3 aspects of kicking?
He can, but don’t know if he will. Kenny is best at all 3 (punting, kickoffs, field goals). If that remains the case, he will do all three. Would like him to not have to do all three. Closer competition in kickoffs and field goals. Quinn close in those. Ryan Tice (spelling?) making a lot of field goals, doing a good job. We’ll see.
How much have Jabrill and Jourdan been on offense, specifically Jabrill?
Yes (LOL)
How much?
We don’t go into that. There’s options, they’re all on the table. Anything to share on injuries, long-term injuries? No, nothing for public consumption.
JGB.

To announce that the QB competition is still neck and neck.
August 29th, 2016 at 2:15 PM ^
Hoping we formally get that QB announcement. Also would like to see a two-deep. I don't think there is really any "gamesmanship" advantage keeping this stuff away from Hawaii (or UCF and Colorado for that matter).
August 29th, 2016 at 4:31 PM ^
I think Harbaugh signals to the team that he isn't letting up even though Michigan is a 41 point favorite over Hawaii.
Shouldn't the coaches strive for every last advantage over Hawaii while the score is still 0-0? He did it last year against Utah.

Is this to discuss the ESPN interview today?

Formation....personnel.
That would be nice. I hate surprises.

Not sure what it's about, just saw the ticker and figured it was worth a post :)
Probably nothing major, but with the season a few days off figured some folks might want to know. Submarine and all

Harbaugh might catch some heat for his political stance there. I know no politics, but I wonder if this will lead to some interesting media coverage.
August 29th, 2016 at 3:52 PM ^
I apologize for misspeaking my true sentiments. To clarify, I support Colin's motivation. It's his method of action that I take exception to

August 29th, 2016 at 3:55 PM ^
Much better, some will still find offense in his actions (right or wrong) and be upset with Harbaugh, but the "motivation" was the big issue.
August 29th, 2016 at 4:27 PM ^
You can't touch a political issue with a 50 ft pole without someone on tumblr being offended. What are you gonna do
August 29th, 2016 at 4:35 PM ^
True, this was just screaming for a typical coach response of "we're focused on our season opener, this is just about Michigan football"
August 29th, 2016 at 6:13 PM ^
Which is why I hope anyone with a brain can understand and agree that he misspoke.
Because yes, not respecting the motivation is HIGHLY wrong and offensive. But if you know anything about Harbaugh, he's very distracted during interviews and he doesn't always articulate himself how he means.
He went back, apologized and explained...move on. If you're really about making progress then you won't let that stop the conversation. But if you're just looking for the first slip up to latch on and point your finger...then in your mind, you got just want you wanted.
Danny Kannel did the exact same thing on Russillo & Kannel today. He gave a VERY articulate and honest side that I think either side could go "hmmm, okay, that makes sense." Then they go to commercial and come back for a quick TV-only segment. Well, it's timed and super short and he was reading tweets from reactions to the first segment and accidently said "colored people" inside of "people of color" as he's clearly rushing to beat the bell before the commercial.
Again, if you're looking for that slip up...he gave it to you. But if you take the time to listen to him and then watch it on TV...he's speaking at one rate and then tries to fly through the last line and just messes it up. And actually the point he was making was more on the side of the majority view from people of color...he just botched the end.
Hopefully people take time to get the whole picture and not just the sound bite.
In the end, we can't make people afraid to have the conversation if we're chastising everyone for not being willing to sit down and have open dialogue.
I'm glad Harbaugh apologized...I knew what he meant when I read it if I'm being honest with myself and I refuse to let that slip up stop the conversation or distract the conversation.
August 29th, 2016 at 3:59 PM ^
Your can acknowledge someones right to do something while stating you agree with that person's stance.
August 29th, 2016 at 4:09 PM ^
Assuming you meant don't agree, but it is all about recruiting. Going into a bunch of black households and saying you think his motivation for his statement is wrong.
August 29th, 2016 at 6:18 PM ^
No one is mad at him for his comments on the stance.
It's that he originally said he didn't respect the motivation behind the stance. Which is saying that you don't respect equality for all people, elimination of discrimation in the country, etc.
That's tough for anyone not to support...if you have to be one of the few who don't - please just let us know because this conversation can stop now.
Now he went back and apologized and said he obviously respects the motivation...he doesn't like the execution (not standing for the flag)...that's an entirely different conversation.

Just photoshop Charles Woodson in there or something, keep JH. While you're at it, photoshop a corn cob pipe into Harbaugh's mouth ;-)
August 29th, 2016 at 4:05 PM ^
I think someone already did that. Maybe I could photoshop someone into the picture as they are photoshopping a corn cob pipe into Harbaugh's mouth.

You dog doesn't play for Michigan either
August 29th, 2016 at 2:14 PM ^
Roster updates out. Nordin is now #3, which is also Speight's number. If the back-up QB is the holder... Can't be Speight in case something happened to Kenny Allen during a game, right?
August 29th, 2016 at 2:21 PM ^
OR--- since O'korn and TJ Wheatley both are #8 = Speight starts
August 29th, 2016 at 2:26 PM ^
Are you trying to imply that Harbaugh might care more about a massively athletic TE being able to play than making the holder change jerseys if our kicker gets hurt mid-game?!
/s
August 29th, 2016 at 2:35 PM ^
Im implying that our QB this year will wear #99.
August 29th, 2016 at 2:38 PM ^
Replying during the press conference gives away that you are not in fact Jim Harbaugh... Therefore, I don't trust this comment.
August 29th, 2016 at 2:59 PM ^
Unfortunately, you are correct. If he comes calling ill be happy to give up the username.

August 29th, 2016 at 2:19 PM ^
no depth chart today :/
August 29th, 2016 at 3:23 PM ^
The depth chart we get in the media guides is not the depth chart per se, but they do create a lot of buzz around here regardless, especially when you have to figure out the starting lineup using Boolean logic like in a typical Harbaugh depth chart.
Actually, I am kind of impressed that some of last year's depth charts weren't comprised of digital logic gates. Can't wait for the first depth chart that uses a XOR or NAND.

I just checked my guide and I'm pretty sure, if this actually gets aired on BTN at 2:25, it will be in replacement of "Inside Michigan State Training Camp." Lol #Disrespekt
