Harbaugh contract details compared to other p5 schools

Submitted by Zarkin Frood on July 25th, 2021 at 6:59 PM

We have a coach that the University decided was underperforming. Instead of firing him (as every other power program would), the University made him take a fifty percent pay cut. How do we as fans believe that our University is committed to winning given that series of events? I still haven’t found a single comparable set of circumstances from other major Universities.

Is there any other example of a program making a coach take that big of a cut due to performance?

I'm a Harbaugh supporter and want him to succeed. But damn, even I'd be willing to fire him right now if it meant we didn't have to have this discussion anymore.

Does this need to be continuously relitigated? I don't care what your opinion was on the matter of firing/extending Harbaugh when that was still an unresolved issue, but seriously, it's been months since the extension was finalized.

Now, all of sudden, we need to have a discussion comparing his contract situation to other P5 coaches and their contract negotiations/terms? The guy has been extended. Let's all support Michigan football and hope for renewed success, regardless of our belief in Harbaugh's ability to turn this ship around.

I wanted Harbaugh gone and Matt Campbell in. That didn’t happen. Harbaugh did agree to a very humbling contract that I can’t see many other coaches agreeing to. The man certainly took his criticism in a very very public manner. Kudos to him for that and I hope he has a great season.

Also: I don’t care about the rest of the power 5 I’m interested in Michigan.

You don’t think making a big name coach take a 50% pay cut is serious?  A football hero from that school and making his contract incentive laden isn’t taking it serious?  That is a kick in the balls to JH and letting him know your not happy with his performance at all. He probably should’ve been fire but wow this is a very clear message to him and it’s also a lot easier to cut him loose now with a much smaller buyout. It also saves the university a ton of money as firing him would’ve cost something like 10 million dollars on top of paying a new coach something like 6-7 million to take over

Not sure what you mean by serious but to me I think the situation was handled very well and seriously

Most GMs and ADs are fools that lack imagination and loyalty and patience. Mack Brown, Brian Leprachaun…they got second chances after mediocrity and near firing/forced retirement. Don’t know or care about their contract statuses. It’s pretty rare for reducing salaries in the profession, so it not being well know he’s/no doesn’t matter.

Plenty of very good coaches eat humble pie and go on to find success again. Saban and Pete come to mind as dudes who learned from their bad years. We can hope JH can turn the corner here, since he is here, and we know he has been successful here and moreso everywhere else.

A motivated JH is something to look forward to—if he doesn’t return to his former self, then there will be an amicable parting. C’est la vie.

I think only history will tell if it was a good move by Warde. If Harbaugh fails, then it’s another 1+ year of mediocrity before we start the search for a new coach. It might save the university some money as you noted, but does that even matter?

I think it’s very likely that Harbaugh is eventually canned. The contract makes him look like a lame duck and I think that’s already coming to fruition in subpar coaching hires. We heard rumors of big name splash hires like Moorhead and Strong but wound up with a bunch of unproven guys in roles they’ve never had before. Outside of maybe Clinkscale and Hart, I don’t see how you can objectively think we’ve upgraded the staff.

If it works and the contract has made Harbaugh “hungry” enough to coach the team into the form that we’re hoping for then Warde will come out smelling like roses. But I think the odds are pretty slim.

If anyone is looking for useful information in this thread, I just received *gasp* an email from Michigan Athletics with details on how mobile ticketing will work.

If you have already purchased or will purchase tickets in the future, you will receive a QR code in your email in the coming days. Download this to the Apple Wallet or Google Pay app on your smartphone and show this to the attendants at the Big House to gain entry.

Looking forward to a full Michigan Stadium this year. Rivals reported that 85k season tickets have already been sold.

We saved a lot of money. The fans rejoiced (vocal majority). I was thoroughly confused. Maybe Harbaugh can Harbaugh his own team and start over. There is one chance and that is if we come out with some serious fire and passion we havent seen in awhile. The combo of Harbaugh and Gattis on offense scares the hell out of me. Getting near Borges levels if they dont speed in space ASAP. Two years ago we had a loaded offense and pretty much pooped our pants. This offense isnt even close talent wise.

I am expecting everyone will say this is crazy, but it's not impossible during negotiations the contract was Harbaugh's idea.  I'm sure Manuel required a pay reduction, but the contract seems very "Harbaugh".  Cut my pay but give me seemingly unachievable incentives to get the money back.  Sure, I'll do that.

Then utilize a question mark in the subject header (goes like this: ?), instead of making a statement to make others assume you have already made the comparisons. We came here only to find that no comparisons have been made.

Exactly.

This is a bad take and you should feel bad.

It's been discussed ad naseum. There are two sides:

One side says Harbaugh is a top 20ish coach--a Top 10 coach when he's got high T--and the only replacement available this winter was Matt Campbell, who is good but unlikely to break into the Saban + Swinney stratosphere. Detractors say this approach accepts 9-4 mediocrity.

Another side says screw that, roll the dice, take the chance with Matt Campbell and hope he is a Top 5 coach who can get into that stratosphere. Detractors point to Nebraska and RichRod.

It doesn't matter which side you're on, because your question is irrelevant. Warde Manuel saved 4+ million to have another year to see if Matt Campbell is the real thing and/or if Jim Harbaugh can get his groove back.

I realize I could have made this more clear in my post. No other universities were in our position. No other program who replaced a coach had a coach who has been Top 5 in the last 10 years. The one potential strong replacement is available next year, so there was little need/incentive to act. No other universities were in this position.
