Harbaugh's Floor and Ceiling in 2021 and 2022

Submitted by Mich04-08 on December 24th, 2020 at 6:23 AM

If he gets an extension that gives him at least the next two years, what do you see as his floor and ceiling, assuming all games are played?

Here's what I see:

2021
Home Games: WMU, Washington, NIU, Rutgers, MSU, NW, OSU
Road Games: Wisconsin, Indiana, Nebraska, Penn State, Maryland
Floor: 4-8
Ceiling: 9-3

2022
Home Games: Colorado State, Hawaii, UConn, Maryland, Penn State, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana
Road Games: Iowa, MSU, Rutgers, OSU
Floor: 7-5
Ceiling: 10-2

Even if he went 9-3 and 10-2, do you see him getting another extension if he is 0-7 against OSU?

Floor:  I would probably guess bare hardwood for the common rooms and ceramic tile for the bathroom and kitchen.

Ceiling:  Stucco with an understated moulding at the wall juntures.

Penn State started 0-5 and still ended up with more wins than us.  MSU lost to Rutgers and still finished with the same amount of wins as us.  Both those teams beat us.  This season may be stupid and weird, but it still counts.  Other teams navigated much harsher obstacles than us and had a better season.  It's definitely a strike against Harbaugh

It's too far away to predict 2022, but 2021 does not look good until we find an answer at QB, CB, and on the lines.  There's really no point comparing us to anyone else.  We need to compare us to us.  We need to get functional on both lines, and get some decent QB & CB play.  Until that happens even the Rocky Lombardi's of the world can beat us or Rutgers can take us to triple OT.

We saw UM and Harbaugh’s floor this season. We have seen that Harbaugh can win, and that this was likely an aberration of a season.

Cade showed he can play. Milton was not the main reason the team lost, but the offense did pick up with Cade. If neither of them improves, expect McCarthy to come in and and win the job.

The defense was the worst part of this year. UM would’ve beat MSU with a defense, with Milton.

I really hate the takes where the entire team will perform exactly the same the next year, regardless of who comes and goes and who grows. The last two recruiting classes have been strong. Last year’s on defense, this year on offense.

The inferential skills that don’t even imagine development or see the talent because of a bad season—such fun. Can we wait to see staff changes, first?

LBs underperformed. McGrone is more likely to have a comeback year than to regress...with new coaches. Next fall may be the Aidan and Braiden show at DE. Who knows. Maybe Hinton is used right and Mazi shows up and is a space eater?

Green was improving. He has good technique and now a year of confidence. Gray would be a stronger safety with his height and speed. I imagine Hill has a baller year...moved to corner. I imagine the this year’s freshmen safeties to replace Hill and Hawkins at safety.

Corner is one of the hardest positions to play in college, especially now, because it is a pass heavy world in which reaction and technique are key. It is also the easiest position to see mistakes from a fan perspective because the average fan is following the ball, not watching individual positions.

Ceyair is not likely to come in and be a savior if he commits. See: Seldon and DWG. Shoot, see: Ambry. He may or may not be good enough to to immediately compete to start. Who knows.

but we will continue to see the very short predictions come in weekly, bereft of anything but residue feelings from this year’s stench.

Totally agree - I even think it may be a little early to predict 2021 until:
1. Are we able to plug any weak areas through the portal.
2. What exactly does the coaching staff look like to start the season.
3. Do we end up with any surprising performances from freshman? Namely - as you mention - QB, DB, DL.

I like the way you said "decent QB & CB play".  Let alone outstanding, so we'll keep it real and not raise the bar too high. It would be best for the 2021 team to exceed expectation rather than fail to meet them.

I hope Michigan winds all the games it should win and pulls out a victory or two against teams we should lose to.

Sounds like we have a long way to go in which I subscribe to.

Special set of circumstances. Just sent 4 members of the O-Line to the NFL. No spring practice, shorter training camp with social distancing. New QB. Those who had say an experienced O-line tended to do better than those who were putting it together. Assuming everyone gets the spring practice, summer workouts on campus and fall camp, the team will be much better.

I don't see any natural way for this years team to transition into a 9-3 team in 2021. Corners could get to league average, but the DL and LB has ZERO proven P5 level players. This feels like a 6-6 team that could get luckey and get to 8-4 or unluckey and go 4-8. Depends on how much NW, Maryland, IU return b/c those seem like the big swing games.

This is what I don’t get about Harbaugh. He isn’t stupid. Dude had a great football mind. You don’t accomplish what he has unless you understand what it takes to win.

But how Harbs didn’t have his eyes open to see gaping holes in recruiting and a defense that, at best, has average to below average B10 players at CB, LB, and DL is beyond me. Maybe he did see the issues but could t get the recruits he wanted.

I don’t know, but I can only imagine it will take 2-3 years to get out of the hole our Defense is in.
