Grimes committing this Saturday?

Submitted by Bosch on
According to this ($, info in header), http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=2&c=932948&ssf=1&RequestedURL=ht… Grimes is committing after the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Saturday. This is the first I have heard this and haven't seen any discussion here. The general feeling is that he's going to be Blue, but it would certainly be nice to have it official (if you can call it that these days). Does that mean that Murphy will also commit on Saturday?

Step back a second. Being a "silent commit" is actually better than being a verbal commit because then you don't get the other coaches trash talking your commitment and trying to persuade your de-commitment. For Michigan this year, Cullen's decision was a very good one because other coaches were given plenty of stuff to bad talk Michigan about if they were pursuing Christian with the goal of painting Michigan in a negative light. As to your initial thought, if Christian called Rich Rod in May, said "I am committing to your program but please keep it a secret from Scout, Rivals and ESPN, so I can have a press conference after your 2009 season" how would Rich Rod not like that fact? The idea that these kids have to publicize their decisions is one I completely disagree with. Hell, Michigan could already have 5 more commits and be up against the 29-man number and none of us know about it.

1. It's not like RR and Co. stopped recruiting Cullen or other DBs after the "silent" commitment - assuming there was a silent commitment, which I'm not sure was actually confirmed. And, Cullen committed in November, so there wasn't the same level of pressure or urgency that exists as we near signing day. 2. Just as some coaches will negatively recruit, others will stay away from verbally committed players, so I think that goes both ways. Edit: JG-Players don't have to publicize their decision, but many want to and that's fine. Rarely, do you see what you seem to be suggesting: a player "silents" to a program and has no announcement and just sends in his letter on NSD. Fans, media, and other teams want to know and the player almost always tells them. Players could say "no comment" but most don't and it seems like people such TomVH and others would surely respect a players wishes if he said, "I have no comment and will not comment at all, so please don't contact me again."

I didn't hear the presser, but I believe you. However, Rivals reported this on 11/22/09, "Despite having a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, Christian said he has not made his decision yet." http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1019882 And, Rivals quoted CC on 11/2/09, "The visits have just been really good and now I'm sorting it out. Anybody in the top five has a chance; it just depends on how the visits go." http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1010206 So, if he was a silent, then 1) it doesn't seem to have much credibility (my original point) if he's still taking visits and stating publicly that everyone still has a chance, or 2) He doesn't really mean that everyone still has a chance and then he's kind of taking other programs for a ride. All the big-time programs spend a tremendous amount of resources on recruiting and it'd be nice if programs could always trust silents, but I don't think they can and I don't think the programs think they can either b/c the one they trust will be the one that doesn't end up signing - again, early signing period gets my vote.

90% of recruiting news is complete shit, so don't get yourself caught up in quotes from kids. A silent or a public commit means the same thing to the coaches. We had public decommits last year, maybe we had silent decommits who knows. Having the kid say it publicly means nothing. Do you remember Will Campbell?? A couple guys dug up a headline from a couple of years ago. Wolverines are my leader.......Sincerely, CJ Spiller. An early signing period is a completely different argument. An early signing period would be fine with me, but it has nothing to do with a kid being silent or public in his commitment.

1. The discussion was about the acceptability of a player making a silent commitment to one program and then playing the rest publicly 2. Coaches make recruiting decisions based on the commitments they have secured and I think most coaches (especially Joe Tiller; see "snake oil" quote) will tell you that none are secure until NSD. An early signing period would allow coaches to know who's actually committed regardless of their silent or verbal status b/c the players couldn't back out w/o losing eligibility. Edit: Does telling someone to "calm down" on message boards really have any impact? Seems like the posting was made (calmly or not) b/c we have an opinion to share, which is the whole point of these boards.

On this idea that a silent commitment has much value. It could have value if silent or verbal commitments were honored, but they don't have to be. Just as you think a player shouldn't have to publicize his decision, I suspect you also rightfully think that a player should be able to change his verbal or silent commitment, which is why coaches have to continue recruiting them and coaches like the idea of public commitments instead of private (it seems easier to switch a silent commitment than public verbal). Not that you asked, but I think an early signing period, like in basketball, would be great.

Okay, I'm good with this but until I hear from: KEM06 (whatever the hell his name is) or Nick Saban or any of his 20 other identities posting this same info 3 days in a row I'm suspicious. Also, until "The Knowledge" weighs in, well, Scout and Rivals be damned. . YES . it is official. THE KNOWLEDGE has inside information once again. . yes . The Grimes commitment will occur on Saturday. . yes . Now THE KNOWLEDGE will go bask in glory ...something like that, anyway.

yeah...
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Hollywood Hills (Fla.) cornerback Tony Grimes talks about his final schools and upcoming decision after the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in this ScoutTV presentation.
I don't think that means "at" the game
