Greg Mattison Leaving Michigan to be Ohio State DC
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
Greg Mattison is getting up there. He was Urbz DC at Florida. But he is so old. We had maybe a year or two max left with this guy.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
This means Washington moves down to the DL now, right?
If it came to keeping Mattison for 2 more years or keeping a bright young coach for the foreseeable future, I'll take the young guy.
Maybe this isn't the end of the world. But why the hell is Pep still on this staff?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
....'cuz ryan day hasn't hired him yet.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
I totally agree. Promote the young guy who can also recruit and who wasn’t 50 years old during the MySpace boom.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:26 PM ^
Logical right? Partridge to LBs and bring Bush Sr to safeties.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
No fucking way.
I'm absolutely disgusted. I loved that man.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
WTF!! Total disbelief right now!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
....did you know about this or hint at it in another thread?
January 7th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
Give me any good news umbig11, anything to get over this GM news
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
I'm a homer slappy fanboy and I'm here to tell you that in my completely subjective, irrational opinion this is not going to work out at all for OSU.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
I agree. One of the strangest moves ever.
January 7th, 2019 at 3:09 PM ^
I totally agree, I have many pairs of maize and blue tinted glasses but this baffles me on their end. I'd be pissed off if i were them (fans)
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Hell I was wondering when Mattison was going to retire
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
I like him as a coach and a recruiter. And I'll get negged for this.. but I don't fear him as the DC. He knows how Harbaugh operates, maybe this will also force him to switch up the offense.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
I mean, one can hope he makes some changes to the offense. But I'm with you, I don't exactly fear Mattison as the DC, plus he's getting pretty long in the tooth. Seems like a stop gap move for OSU. I do love that the OSU fans don't seem to like the hire though.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Get up and comer
Brady Hoke
January 7th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Like someone else said Hoke wouldn’t be a bad idea. He’s a hell of a recruiter. If you look at the d-line during Harbaugh’s year, the best players were Hoke recruiters.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:09 PM ^
I doubt it happens, but Hoke as our DL coach isn't something I'd be mad about. That said, I'm sure we can get someone better and younger.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
This blows my mind. So much so I had to come check out the board while on vactation. Yes it is a big loss, but I do not think he’s well suited to be a DC. I thought the DLine role was perfect for him especially as he grew older. Tough loss but in the end I hope we can get someone young who’s ready to recruit and teach
January 7th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
this is a good sign.... most likely day and osu could have made a run at just about any DC in the country, but instead he goes after a dude nearly 70 years old, who hasn't been a DC on a good program in ......... how many years?
Mattison was a good coach and recruiter, no doubt... but if you had bottomless pockets how many dc's would you go after before him? Quite a few I would guess.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:10 PM ^
Why would Day have access to any DC in the country? Who wants to coach under an unestablished young guy? Best case scenario you do well and take a head coaching job elsewhere. Worst case, the whole staff flops and you have to start back over as DC at a worse program. I think they took Mattison cause that was the best they could get
January 7th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
I wouldn't think they hire a 69 year old guy without some assurance he is bringing over a couple key assistants with him.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:46 PM ^
Honestly this is hard to believe.
January 7th, 2019 at 4:05 PM ^
Something from a bad movie.
How much information from Michigan is he going to give to Ohio St? What if he feels slighted all these years being put on D Line when DJ Durkin was hired as DC? Maybe he didn't feel slighted. But what if.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:47 PM ^
Excellent recruiter and DL position coach. Left Michigan in 1996 for Notre Dame. Returned to AA in 2011 during the Hoke debacle and stayed on to his credit, Did a great job filling in during the first bowl game against Florida in Jim's first year. Really weird that he is bailing at this point in his life with grandchildren in AA. Hope it's not a sign of Harbaugh leaving.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:47 PM ^
Wonder how OSU fans feel about this. My guess is they aren't very excited (putting it mildly) so maybe this isn't a bad thing.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
Mattison is 69 (nice) right now. His best years as a DC are well behind him. Traitor, yes, but from a football standpoint this is a pretty great trade if I'm being honest.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
It’s hardly a trade when we get nothing in return
January 7th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
It’s hardly a trade when we get nothing in return
January 7th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
This will force Michigan to change their offensive philosophy because he knows everything we run.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
Hoops school!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
Meh. Not surprised. Can’t expect someone to not take a better job when it’s offered to them. And if Clemson/Alabama aren’t offering, then OSU is the next best option out there. Nothing Mattison can do to us that hasn’t already been done over the last 20 years. They own us whether he goes there or not.
Also, think about this: how many years does Mattison really have left in him anyway? He’s got to be 70 or close to it. This may not be as huge a loss as we all think it is.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
He was obviously a good DL coach but I saw some serious limitations when he was a DC here. Some scheme things just didn't make sense.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
I hate this for us. But I don't get it for Ohio State. Ohio State can have whomever they want, and they pick a 70 year old D Line coach? Is he going to be co-DC? If so, with who? Larry Johnson?
It sucks for us in that Mattison knows our defense, our offense, and our players. It's not great for OSU outside of that it will certainly give them an advantage in the Game.
Also, OSU had a really bad defense this season, any change is bound to be a big step up for it.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:59 PM ^
I don't get this for OSU. They should be looking for a younger guy. And having two DL experts on staff is really over-kill for OSU. Other than just to poke Harbaugh in the eye, I don't get this hire by Day. If we keep Washington as a result, I think we are winning the tradeoff.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
This is SO ABSURD. I have no other words.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
Maybe Pep is gonna coach the DL thus opening up the OC spot? ?
I don't believe this one, so sad.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Oh well.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
WTF why would he do this?! We need a young fresh OC stat
January 7th, 2019 at 1:53 PM ^
I find this very weird and surprising. Yes, it's a promotion, but speculation has been that he would end his career in Ann Arbor, family is there, and he always promotes his love for UM and the education. Then proceeds to go to our biggest rival (with all due respect to Rutgers) after his d-line got man handled by their o-line a few weeks ago. Puzzling and feels odd!
God I hope Harbaugh pulls his pants up and shows the team he's tired of this shit and gets a phenomenal new O-coordinator (after Pep finds himself an NFL job) and hires up and coming coaches who can recruit.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:54 PM ^
Hello...... Brady Hoke?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:54 PM ^
Well shit. Who's gonna make cookies for our DL now?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:54 PM ^
Imgagine if Don Brown also leaves meaning we'd have basically an entirely new defensive staff in 2019, and no changes are made on offense.
This place will be fun.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:56 PM ^
This sucks. Who are possible replacements for DL coach?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:58 PM ^
Al Washington.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:13 PM ^
Agreed - I bet they promised Al the DL job and a chunk of Greg's $ to keep him. Next moves? Partridge back to LBs/Viper and Bush (senior) to Safeties.
This all makes sense to me. Brown is not going to Temple. He finished his self-scout and is addressing his needs at UM. (1) younger coaches for recruiting (2) recruiting strength in Ohio, NJ and Florida (3) senior tutelage for a young LB crew and (4) damn good safety coach who can recruit and get guys to an NFL level of performance.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:36 PM ^
Makes sense, Mongo!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:56 PM ^
WHAT THE FUCK!!!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:56 PM ^
The more I think about this, the more on board I am with Mattison leaving. The shitty thing, of course, is him going to OSU instead of literally anywhere else.
The D line wasn't great this year against OL with a pulse considering all of the talent on board; maybe some new blood mixing it up will help next year. If this is a necessary step to giving Al Washington and Chris Partridge more responsibilities (and raises!) then fine.
As others are saying, assuming this isn't an indicator of something truly awful brewing on the staff (Harbaugh bailing, for instance) it basically forces an offensive change next year. Otherwise you're just handing OSU the parts of the playbook they didn't already know.
Anyways, I hope you fail at OSU, Greg! Thanks for everything.
