Greg Mattison DC Buzz?
Just stumbled on this:
Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is talking with the University of Michigan about their job, per league source.
It's all over numerous sources via Twitter (Ravens_Football, Ravens Insider) FWIW.
EDIT:

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is under consideration for the same position at the University of Michigan, the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday, citing a league source.
Mattison, who has interviewed with Michigan, coached with new Wolverines coach Brady Hoke under Jack Harbaugh at Western Michigan and Lloyd Carr at Michigan.
The Ravens defense has ranked in the top 10 in the NFL during both of Mattison's seasons as coordinator after Rex Ryan left to take the New York Jets coaching job.
The Sun reported defensive backs coach Chuck Pagano could be a front-runner to replace Mattison.

"What are you talking about?!? This is MICHIGAN!" Sorry, Brady is getting to me.

People are furious with the collapse against the Steelers and ready to run the whole staff out of town on a rail. Who would want to involve themselves with such an atmosph...oh, right.
Seriously though, that may be part of it. Also, potential lockout. Also, the Ravens have a rapidly aging defense that isn't long for this world, and the team as a whole is about to lose a TON of starters to free agency. May be a good time for a change.

I'd take that - he'd also open up Texas again as people still talk about the days of the wrecking crew and he's got direct ties to that. Although today's recruits weren't even alive for that or were 1 or 2 years old so maybe that wouldn't matter... Either way I'd take it and wouldn't complain it's not Randy Shannon.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
Even if the recruits were too young, their parents might remember.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
Sorry, just can't get fired up for the Borges hire.
I'd love to somehow get Trogvac into the mix as well but don't think he'd leave his DL job with GB to coach that at Michigan. He would be a good DC option though.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
You can't get fired up for Borges, but you can get fired up for Cam Cameron? I mean, I can understand not liking Borges (I disagree, but I understand it), but Cam Cameron would be like DeBord 2.0 (3.0 if DeBord 2007 counts as 2.0).

yes, I know he's been both a position coach and DC in the nfl. I also know that he has never coached college ball which means he's never had to recruit and he has absolutely no prior relationships with high school coaches anywhere. Why would anyone want this when there are plenty of good DC's available who have college experience (e.g., Austin, Corwin Brown, Greg Mattison, Randy Shannon)?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
as a college assistant at Ball St, Navy, Colorado St, and Notre Dame (under Holtz).
Wikipedia dude.

Can he bring Ray Lewis and Ed Reed with him?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
No be he is taking Suggs and Ngata instead. Our d line should be pretty good this year.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
I believe Ed Reed has two years of college eligibility left so let's get moving on a really convincing NCAA appeal so we're ready to go by the time he retires.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
That would be fitting for all the recruits Al Golden stole we will take your Ed Reed! fair trade IMO
January 18th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
You think Mattison can bring any players with him?!?
There have to be a couple we can poach from his current squad.......
January 18th, 2011 at 4:20 PM ^
This would be a great hire and well worth the wait!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
a great hire!!! This would be a big recruiting plus.

Why did Greg Mattison leave to go to ND?
January 18th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
Money and other enticements for his family that Michigan just couldn't counter. Mattison is a family guy, and wasn't looking to become a head coach. ND made a really, really good offer for a lateral move, and if I'm remembering correctly, offered full rides for his kids. One of them ended up playing softball at ND, I think, and Greg ended up coaching his son at Florida.
It wasn't acrimonious, though the timing (during bowl preparations) raised eyebrows. The Mattisons loved Ann Arbor, but for a career assistant coach, sometimes you have to do what's best for the bigger picture of your life.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:30 PM ^
Thanks Bando. I am always suspicious when someone leaves us to go to ND. I wish we were not so cheap.
What about Corwin Brown? Same reason that we are too cheap.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:42 PM ^
Corwin never coached at MIchigan. After his NFL career ended, he coached in college, then the NFL, then went to ND and moved up the ladder there. He really hasn't done anything with Michigan since he was a player.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:10 PM ^
Free tuition as a benefit, UofM does not. I recall that being a major draw.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
I think he had some problems here (Carr?) as he went to an similar role at ND. I know his son grew up in Ann Arbor but played d-line for Iowa
January 18th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
Would be a great hire IMO...must really love UM to step down from the Ravens job.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
Wouldnt you love to see us get a bad ass DC hire and the defectors feel like asses in the end .. I would!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
Actually i'd rather they reconsidered and came back...
January 18th, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
I'm just looking forward to having a DC, unlike the last two years.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
it will mark the return of GERG!! I can't handle the thought of GERG chants once again ringing in my ear while I down my fifth shot of vodka (one for every 100 yards of offense we give up). Okay, back to positive thoughts WRT the 2011 defense.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
The Gerg chants don't need to die out.. they are both Greg. Would he be Gerg 2.0 - better coaching skills, but we sacrifice the fine hair.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
Take what was once a negative, and turn it into a positive. GERG 2.0. Come on Mattison!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:57 PM ^
I with your original thought, Gerg's defense pushed me to alcoholism (thats my story and I'm sticking to it) My liver can't handle another season like last.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
To have a defensive scheme anywhere near the Ravens would be AWESOME! I know we still need a Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, & co. But I figure they would have some major pull when it comes to defensive recruits. Who wouldn't wanna play for someone who coached that D.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:14 PM ^
I'm worn out from all this DC/Recruiting stuff....I need some great news, fast!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:14 PM ^
all of the sources say that he INTERVIEWED for the job... why would he interview if he wouldn't take it? sounds to me like, assuming brady likes him, the job is his. I think this would be a solid hire for The Team, The Team, The Team!
January 18th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
People were saying the exact same thing about Les Miles when he "interviewed" with Brandon.
"assuming brady likes him"--Mattison and Hoke are known to be close. Mattison recommended Hoke to Moeller when Hoke was hired by Michigan in 1995. Before that, Mattison and Hoke had coached together at WMU under Jack Harbaugh.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
Of course, I think anyone could make the Ravens D look badass. At the same time, I liked some of his blitz packages against the Steelers.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
I think anyone could make the Ravens D look badass
I thought about that, but im not so sure thats true. True, they still have Ray Lewis (& Suggs & Ngata), but I think they hit their peak talent wise under Ryan. Ever since, they lost a key LB, Ed Reed has pretty much never been healthy, and everyone has gotten older with very little young talent
January 18th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
2012 Recruiting scenario
Coach Mattison: Hello Danny O'Brien/Tommy Schutt/ Chris Wormley/ Matt Godin would you like to become the next Ngata or Terrell Suggs? Because I built them up into NFL superstars.
or
Coach Mattison: Hello James Ross/Deaysean Rippy/Royce Jenkins-Stone/ Laron Taylor would you like to become the next Ray Lewis? Because I can make you one of the most feared linebackers to play the game of football.
or
Coach Mattison: Hello Allen Gant/ Terry Richardson/ Elijah Shumate have you guys ever heard of Ed Reed?
All respond: When will you accept my commitment?
January 18th, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
I like where your head is at!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
That's What She Said.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
Danny O'Brien the Maryland quarterback?
January 18th, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
We do need a QB backup.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
the only problem with this, is we wouldn't be able to recruit offensive players, for fear of being killed during practice!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:37 PM ^
Yes, please.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
Me Likey.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
would be that we hire or develop a couple of younger coaches on the staff to be head coaches so that Michigan has viable internal candidate when Hoke retires after 10+ years at the helm.
That said, Mattison would be a fine hire, though I would prefer Austin as he is younger.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Meh, with this defense as bad as it is, age is no consideration. You take the best guy you can get.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
"Hoke retires after 10+ years at the helm" wow, what confidence!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
That's why the dream scenario would be to bring Corwin Brown in with the intention of grooming him to be a viable HC candidate someday. Not sure how we could convince him to come as a DB coach, but if Hoke can do it the defensive staff is starting to look pretty goddamn good - especially from a recruiting perspective.
I'll say it now - if Hoke pulls Mattison and Brown, dude will be here for a long time.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
If Austin does well, he'll be gone before the job opens up for him.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:09 PM ^
If Austin does well, then I'm good cause that means we would have a good defense and thats all im asking for.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Why would a guy leave the Ravens for the same job at Michigan? Would he make more here?
