Grantland's Takedown of College Basketball Rap Videos

Submitted by Gameboy on

Grantland has a regular feature where their basketball writer, Mark Titus (not the guys with unhealthy admirable obessession with Burke) ranks top 12 teams in college basketball.

But the ranking is not the good part (though there is a very good takedown of Green-less MSU). The really funny part is at the bottom where he goes off on the very disturbing trend of kids making rap videos for their school basketball team.

To quote:

First there was "This Is Indiana." Then there was "Boiler Up." And finally, at long last, this week we got the third installment of the "Everyone Associated With Your School Hates You Because You Are the Whitest People in the World and You Just Embarrassed the Entire Fan Base With Your Shitty Rap Video" trilogy.

I just pray that no well-meaning but clueless kids produce "We are Michigan (fergodsakes)" video. If you know ANYONE trying to create one, beat him senselessly until he stops. Friends don't let friends make whitest rap videos ever.

I always liked Mark Titus. I had a feeling he would get a writing gig somewhere. He had a blog (Club Trillion) about his experiences at the end of the bench at OSU. Good stuff.

Let me guess the Grantland intro to the Missouri video....

"We fired up the Airbook to check out the latest questionable "We Are" whitebread boy video. In between sips of stolen Pepsi Max (thanks Teresa!) and the slow Comcast corporate connection, our eyes were met with stumbling, bumbling 19 year old acting the fool. If dressing in Abercrombie and grabbing your bros, beers and crotches were art, Missouri would get an A."

I'm sure you're all going to hate me for this, but the This Is IU video is really well done.  It's certainly cheesy but it's also a bit tongue-in-cheek.  The chick throws a chair!  There's a middle-aged man dancing at :58s.  I don't know if I'm impressed or if We Are ND has lowered my standards that badly.
