How does this affect the scholarships for this recruiting class?

does this open the door for Leon McQuay?

Kendall Fuller and Vernon Hargreaves III too. Huge break for us.

Being a dick & realistic are not mutually exclusive. It is realistics, but calling someone leaving the team a huge "win" is harsh, even if it opens a slot for a top of the line recruit. That being said I see where this can lead to a huge opportunity.

naw, think hargreaves is still out due to the numbers at his position. he needs to have an opening at lb to get a scholie.

You can back date up to three scholarships to the year before if they are early enrollees as long as the previous year didn't hit 25. Michigan had 25 scholarships handed out in 2012 (with 3 early enrollees) and 20 in 2011. This is important because Michigan can back date the three early enrollees from this past spring (Wilson, Ringer, Bolden) on to the 2011 class. This gives the 2012 class 22. We could now take up to 28 if we had three early entrants and we had the scholarship room to do so. I believe Ross wants to be an early enrollee and there may be a couple more as well.

not necessarily, the school uses it whichever way they need it and can back-date, more of a fluid or changeable situation actually..
similar to taking a tax deduction completed before april 15. you can use it in the previous year if you didn’t have enough, or the present year. whichever works best for you.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:47 AM ^
We could accept up to 28, if we had three early enrollees and were still within the 85 overall limit.. That would be the absolute max. Chance are the 85 overall will be the deciding factor on how big this class could be.

Apparently Fitz and Clark will be back at practice this week, so that'a good sign that Clark isn't gone at least.

We may be able to get another spot. If you have early enrollees, you can take up to 28 (3 early)
August 12th, 2012 at 11:40 AM ^
We took 25 last year though, so I'm not sure you can backdate to that year if that class was full.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:50 AM ^
The three early early enrolles from the 2012 class could be backdated to 2011, I believe.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:50 AM ^
That 25 number assumes we didn't backdate any of our EEs last year, though, which really would be pretty silly.
August 12th, 2012 at 12:02 PM ^
We only had 20 in 2011. Backdating the three EE from 2012 shouldn't be a problem.
August 12th, 2012 at 12:23 PM ^
I thought we were running against the 85 total scholarships limit, not the 25 per year limit. Backdating wouldn't help that at all.
August 12th, 2012 at 12:28 PM ^
Well we were already looking at a class of 25 for 2013 so any additional scholarships are constrained by both the total and yearly limits.

Seemed like a good kid, just wasn't getting closer to ever playing with all the young safeties coming in. Hope he finds a better fit and has a good life. Good luck, Tamani.

In case anyone is curious, 30% of the 2011 class (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/commitments/2011/m…) is gone after only one year:
Barnett, Brown, Carter, Jones, Posada, Rock
Various reasons, as usual ... also, not too surprising given the circumstances (coaching change, timing, etc.).
Even crazier, 44% of the 2010 class (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/commitments/2010/m…) is somewhere else after two years:
Christian, Dorsey, Johnson, Jones, Kinard, Pace, Rogers, Talbott x 2, Vinopal, White, Williamson
For the sake of comparison, 2009 (http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/commitments/2009/m…) has lost 36% of its members after three years:
Bell, Emilien, Forcier, Jones, LaLota, Stokes, Turner, Witty
Gonna be a few holes in the upperclass ranks in a couple of years ...

If Team 132 is any indication, we're very fortunate that those who stayed have grown into the type of leaders and players to mitigate the numbers problem. I expect more of the same from the seniors of Team 133 and 134 who were a part of the coaching transition and learned under the leadership of Martin, Molk, RVB, Junior, Kovacs, etc.
August 12th, 2012 at 12:26 PM ^
I don't really think that's too uncommon from a high level BCS school. Maybe the percentage is a bit high, but I wonder what types of numbers you would see from a school like OSU or Texas.

He did sign a LOI. Down in SEC country at schools like Ole Miss it's not uncommon to see a handful of guys not qualify academically after signing letters of intent. It seems rare to us because Michigan rarely goes after guys that are risks to not qualify (see: Aaron Burbridge).
August 12th, 2012 at 12:44 PM ^
Interesting but I think the circumstances are different. The 2009 and 2010 defections were more damaging because they included some of the more talented prospects in each class.
The players who've left from 2011 were all fairly low rated and have more talented prospects in the 2012 and 2013 classes replacing them. Arguably, Barnett is the only one who really would have been in contention for a slot on the two deep in the forseeable future.
A shame it didn't work out and hope they all find success elsewhere, but I think this is potentially a positive from an overall roster management perspective.
August 12th, 2012 at 7:52 PM ^
Agreed, and even Barnett had some injury issues, if I recall correctly.
August 12th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
I knew the attrition was a tad high, but to see the numbers is amazing actually. And contrary to another poster, those numbers are high for BCS programs. There are understandable reasons as you said, but this will defintely hurt depth soon, or at least, veteran depth.
