Go Buckeyes (Sunday, and Sunday Only)
That's right. You heard me. Go Bucks. O-H, and whatnot.
I've noticed a number of people on Twitter saying that they still can't root for OSU this weekend, even though an OSU win (coupled with a Michigan win over PSU) means Michigan's first Big Ten regular season title since 1837 1986. So, as someone who would really like to see that, I simply don't understand the impulse to root against the Buckeyes in this situation.
So, my question to those who will be rooting against OSU is this: what's up with that?
EDIT: I forgot WBB was taking on Ohio today. Title changed to reflect the fact that for today, OHIO SUCKS, and we wish all of the bad things in the world to happen to them and no one else.
I have thoughts of rooting for ohio. I understand that I should never root for ohio but please explain to God that if ohio wins and we win; we share a Big Ten Title.
I promise to continue Schadenfreude against ohio. However, in this instance, it is much better to have schadenfreude against lil bro for this will help us.
I will continue my financial support to the Church and School. I will say 10 Hail Mary's before the game even though I am NOT Catholic. I will get a full-immersion baptism to make me holy again as I feel so dirty.
I don't get the people that are having trouble rooting for an OSU win. Alot of them are probably the same people that criticized Dantonio for rooting for OSU in 2010 (IIRC) when a Michigan win would have helped give them a share of the conference title.
OSU and UM interests don't align together very much. This is one of those times that it happens. Rooting for OSU is the same as rooting for Michigan in this instance. If it helps people, think of it as rooting against MSU. Because that's what it really is. You could insert another conference team in the place of OSU and we'd still be rooting for MSU to lose. It just so happens that MSU is playing OSU.
Somewhere deep down inside it is tickling me pink that you are having to cheer for OSU in order for you to back into a BIG championship.
If it helps to drown the sorrows of football season, then we're glad to help.
Hey, look... Denard just scored another last minute touchdown...
You can't drag me any further down than I am. I have accepted terms that we will never beat you again.
As for the other turds, errr replies, Backing in is when you need another team to lose in order for you to advance. If you were to beat MSU and win the BIG, that is not backing in. If MSU was to lose to OSU and as a result you gained a 3rd of the title, that is backing in.
Note: that I am neither a OSU or MSU slappy, so nothing hurts me in this race. It is watching your fan base on your knees praying for something out of y our control to happen while cheering for your MORTAL Enemy.
As for MSU falling short, a #1 seed in the NCAA tourny, in my opinion, is far from short.
Or any other title at the rate your school is going...
But please, someone who is so inexperienced in conference races shouldn't be schooling us in how it works. Everyone needs someone to lose to win a conference title. MSU doesn't control their destiny if Purdue and Iowa don't help them against us. OSU needed Indiana's help. The fact that the game comes towards the end of the season vs. the beginning means nothing.
Backing in, if such a thing exists, is when you're behind, and the team ahead of you collapses, usually due to some injury or something beyond their control. A situation where if the event didn't occur, they would have easily grabbed the title one their own. MSU losing at home to Penn State to end the season might be backing in. Losing to OSU? Not hardly.
It's not backing in when you've beaten both of the teams involved.
That is all.
How is winning six of seven games, including four straight on the road, "backing in"?
It's not, obviously. Just Ohio being petty, as expected. Watch, if everything falls our way on Sunday and we wind up in a three-way tie for first, our thrid of the title won't be "legitimate" because we "backed in". I'd normally find such flawed logic puzzling except that it will be being issued by Spartan and Buckeye fans in which case it will make complete sense.
Petty and small. Tell me, what hurts more. The fact that you guys are going to fall short of expectations this season despite being one of the most talented teams in the country because your coach couldn't keep egos in check, or the fact that after Sullinger bolts for the pros this season, any chance for true basketball glory in the near future will be gone?
I'll root for them, but I could never bring myself to type out "Go B******s" (see? couldn't do it).
#WINOHIO
Rare win/win for us either way. One of our rivals has to lose. I'd prefer the outcome to result in a share of the B1G Title. If not, and Ohio loses, we get a two-seed in the B1G tourney and avoid the dreaded three-seed. Either way, GO BLUE!! beat PSU!
PS - I live in Ohio and have to deal with their BS. Not many Sparty fans down here to ruin my day. I will have to endure their misguided thoughts that our destiny was controlled by them and that the only reason we got a share of the title is because of them (their brains really do function this way). THAT SUCKS!
[EDIT] Told you... see phork comment above "back into" a title
You're wrong. It is absolutely not a win-win scenario for us. If TSIO loses, then it's definitely a lose-win scenario, with Sparty the winner and us (and TSIO) the losers. It's a win-win if TSIO wins, because then we're co-champs and we get to watch Sparty blow up at having to share a title with us.
the title of this thread.
those two words should never, ever be put next to each other on this blog.
this is a sad day here at MGOBLOG
"Watching MSU and OSU play is like watching the Iraq-Iran conflict. You don't want either of them to win. You're just hoping a bomb goes off or a meteor hits or something."--Michael Bradley, WTKA
I'm rooting for a Big Ten Championship on Sunday.
A 1 point Ohio win over MSU with both Sullinger and Green getting suspended for the B1G tournament????
Now, there's something to root for!!!!
This whole thing is dumb. It's simple, I hope Ohio State beats Michigan State. I want Michigan to win the Big Ten title and that is the only way for it to happen. I don't feel bad, I don't feel like I need to shower, I'm not going to vomit... none of that. I hope OSU wins, it's easy.
Amen!
I found myself pulling for O v Sparty last fall in Columbus, when O did not seem to be a great threat to our own success. Admittedly, I have been called out here before for lacking sufficient hatred. I'll keep working on it.
Fuck that! Id rather sparty win so we finish AHEAD of ohio.
We must beat Penn State first. OSU/MSU follows our game which sets up nicely. I have major doubts that Ohio will be able to pull off the win after watching them against Northwestern. But we'll see what happens.
Sometimes I root against someone. But never over Michigan's interests. Michigan's best interest is to win a Big Ten title for the first time in WAY too long. If that means OSU wins, go Bucks! Ohio has won 24 times so far....somehow I've survived that; one more isn't going to make me particularly miserable. But in this case, it has the potential to make me very happy. People who would cut off their nose to spite their faces make no sense. And it's not even like they're playing some program you love...it's MSU. How much easier could they make it for you? Never hate anyone more than you love Michigan.
Personally, I WANT OSU to be elite in all the sports I care about because their level of skill doesn't change how much I want us to beat them.
Although, that said, I could go for a nice 6 or 100 game winning stream against them in football, just to make up for them ruining my teenage years of watching The Game.
EDIT: this was slightly unrelated to the topic, but I don't see a problem in rooting for them when we need to, I guess is what I'm saying, even if it means something good for them.
I silently want the Buckeyes to win every game, except when we play them... they are so similar to us, and our program has so many that were spawned from them (Bo, Mo, etc) .
If you are a Michigan fan, you want OSU to lose every game, all time, forever, except maybe this next one if you can stomach it.
The same people who made me Michigan fans by age...well, little, both prefer them undefeated before the M game[s] every year, and that's how I was raised before I could ponder these questions myself.
I don't like the way he put it in that post, but there's something logical about wanting your rival to be good, or even great. It looks all the better when they trudge out of A2 at 11-1.
Interesting fact not in our rooting favor. The voice of Ohio Paul Keels was on the radio a little while ago and said that Buford is the only Buckeye who has ever played in the Breslin Center. This does not bode well for a team that is already having maturity/chemistry issues.
Root...for Ohio...?
It's not about rooting for Ohio so much as it's rooting for a Big Ten championship. Ohio is just a means to that end.
