Glad to see all of you are so noble to walk away from $4.3 million

Dantonio’s a douche and there’s a lot of reasons to tear him a new one for skulking our the back door the way that he is. But his hanging around just long enough to get an extra 4 million isn’t one of them.

Every single one of you would have done the exact same thing and you’re all full of shit if you claim otherwise.

Otherwise, happy trails Mark. Don’t let the door hit you in your prideful ass on the way out.

Precisely. He has plenty of money already and he left the department as a smoldering crater behind him. He put the safety of students at risk. That program might struggle for years because of his tenure. And as someone pointed out, he was probably mailing it the last season+ so he could cash in.

There's not a lot of altruism or magnamity in college sports these days (although if I recall correctly, did Harbaugh actually take less money than Michigan initially offered him?) but D'antonio's case seems extra sleazy.

You don't seem to get it.  When he took the bonus, he should have stayed & endured the shitstorm that was to come.  He also recruited en entire years worth of players & screwed the program by leaving the day before signing day.

If you think all of us would have done THAT you're dead wrong.

It would be pretty shitty to leave the day before National Signing Day, but most of his guys are either already enrolled or signed LOI.  The bigger problem is the shitstorm you mention and that he checked out before last year.   He stuck around for a year and a half to collect 4 million.  He also stopped putting in the effort on the recruiting trail according to the MSU peeps.  He collected a bonus he didn't earn.

Didn't Trump ask for $1.00?

Furthermore, your attempt at an analogy is missing important gravitas for the situation. If I were making 6mil or 9mil a year or whatever... for ten or fifteen years and my employer was being a pain in my lower posterior... I'd tell them to go fuck themselves and walk.

So yes, I would walk away from it! So would you I'm sure... with all of the money these coaches make, if they invest properly, diversify, they'd make more in interest, dividends, and payback on investing in businesses, than they every would by "working for money". (Rich dad poor dad, read it).

This is a ridiculous hypothetical. We all wouldn’t have perpetuated a culture of violence, looked the other way with regards to rape as long as the player were talented, etc... No, many of us wouldn’t have turned down 4.3 million dollars, but then again, most of us wouldn’t be forced to make that decision because we failed as a role model and coach due to us being a shitbag human

I am 1) not the greatest person in history and I am also 2) not ever going to be in this situation because I’m not going to be forced to retire because I’m a shitty person being sued for being such.

Sorry guys, not all people in Utah are this devoid of morals who struggle with putting together a logical argument.

Mark Dantonio has already made millions of dollars and will have chances to make millions more, if he so desires.  He doesn't exactly need that money to keep the lights on.

On the other hand, quitting one day before National Signing Day takes one more whack at the football program he's spent the last couple years working to cripple.  If you're a Spartan fan you ought to be pretty salty about that.

Everything scales, though.  Would you do something immoral (but not illegal) for $1000, if you were homeless and didn't know where your next meal was coming from? Almost definitely.  What if you had food and shelter but still had unpaid bills piling up?  Yeah, still probably.  What if you had a comfortable bank account, and had your life pretty well squared away?  Then no, probably not.  And if you did, we'd be right to judge you for it.

Mark Dantonio, unless he's been busy bribing every prosecutor from Lansing to Washington D.C. (which, granted, we shouldn't rule out), already has millions of dollars.  He has the money for everything he needs, and most of what he wants.  He can get a six-figure job as an analyst on BTN like every other failed Big Ten coach if he wants.  He didn't have to put his school in a more awkward position by holding out for the money, but he did.  Absolutely bring on the judgement.

Well, we also don't know if Mark is doing well financially. Sure, we all assume he is (and I'm sure he is fine), but there is no way for us to really know. Maybe he actually does need the money.

I would have done the same thing in his position. It's $4.3M (before taxes, of course - I guess he will just have to settle for about 60% of that bonus...oh the HORROR).

Come on man...you have wandered way off the deep end here. For starters, if he is not VERY well off financially that is completely on him. And if he is harboring any bitter feelings toward any person or institution that "causes" this money grad-that is also totally on him. Just quit rationalizing more bad behavior for his despicable character.

Probably not.
Just cracks me up that, especially when there are a billion legit reasons to rip Mork as the scumbag he is, people decide to say “And he took the $4 million he knew he’d receive if he hung around another month or so.” When 99% of them would do the exact same thing.

Wow! I’m getting negged for agreeing that donating the money to the victims would have been the right thing to do.

some of y’all have some serious anger issues.

Exactly what I said in another thread. No one in their right mind who knew they were due $4M+ would walk away prior to that. No one. If you would, then you're a fool.

It’s an impossible scenario to put myself in as I will never be in this position. We’ve seen instances of players and coaches taking the money and running and while I can’t fault them for it I will also call them an asshole every time.
