Gardner Sportsmanship, True Michigan Man

Submitted by OccaM on

I think Devin Gardner's legacy will go down as what could have been on the field with better coaching. But off the field, he will be hard to replace. Kudos to him. Saw this on Freep as well.

Back-to-back guys who are true Michigan men, and embody what it means to be a student-athlete on and off the field.

It certainly didn't end up like DG or any of us hoped, but I cherish being able to root for one of the good guys when many other programs are constantly engulfed in scandal.

Hats off to DG. Go Blue.

I really hope he gets drafted.  I know he's devolved quite a bit as a qb but I do think he is a great athlete and extremely flexible... like denard.

Devin deserves it, and I think he's shown it:  He will stick in when the going gets rough and always maintains a positive spirit.

Or is Gardner running for president? This isn't a sympathy tour, it's football! Most turnovers in NCAA last two years and coaches or otherwise you still have to show up to play.......he unfortunately did not. May very well be a great person and M man, but failed miserably on the field. In perspective if he never throws a pass all year......we probably have a better record.

I think it's sad that he didn't have a chance to become a legendary Michigan quarterback, but I'm sure there's a lot more to his life than football.  How many people become legendary sports stars?  I think he had mismanaged talent, but I hardly think his circumstances are tragic.

He "didn't have a chance"?  Seriously ? How many years and how many games has he played in and he wasn't given a chance?

Even Shane was given a chance. Even Bellomy was given a chance. I bet there are a lot of guys that suit up that would love to get into the game for their chance.

By not having a chance I mean not being put into an offensive system where he would be more successful. You're right he had chances in this system, but if he had better pass protection and a spread run to pass system I think we're looking at a different legacy. At the end of the day it's not a huge deal, how many people are even fortunate enough to have the chance of leaving a huge public legacy? I'm sure he'll make his mark in other aspects of life

Vote for him for the CLASSY award! If someone can post the link it would be great. I'm with two sad kids and can't find it. In any event, doing our best to help him win would be a great way to send off a great kid.

A lot like Denard, Devin had one of those genuine smiles.  He was/is a positive, fun loving character.  The only sad asterisk on his career is the offensive changes (the regime change, the OC change, the move to WR and back to QB)..  He truly gave everything to this team - he did everything they ever asked of him.  I dare say anyone put though that many changes would not have performed any better.

The kid is a class act - he's not just a Michigan Man - he's a good human being.

no moment better captured his leadership, his attitude, and his character than this moment.  I'm proud to be a Michigan Wolverine.

Thank you Devin.

So happy we had RR for a little while, great kids he brought in with Denard and Devin. Wish we could have seen them finish their career under him, what could have been....

Sure, I could be critical of his play (maybe a bit unfairly from time to time), but I've always been impressed by his character and his resilience. He could have left Michigan for another school - and who would have blamed him, in retrospect? - but stayed here and did everything that was asked of him.

And just when you think you've seen enough, he does something like this. That's the Michigan Difference.

That photo is a testament to the man Gardner is.  Everything I have seen of him shows a sincerity and maturity.  I wish him success in life on and off the field.

Not to be a jerk but yes hes a nice kid....a polite kid....a gentleman...mature beyond his years. Awesome. I will take someone who came to U of M as a QB that can do just that....be a QB. Because nice guy or not DG was and is not a good QB. Hes lost us more games than hes won. Now blame that on coaching or whatever its the truth. Neg bomb away.

but gosh how many of these DG is a great kid threads can we have? Im sure the kids on all the teams that beat us dont throw puppies in wood chippers. Perhaps some of them are "good kids" as well. I GET IT DG IS A GREAT KID. But while we recognize that can we also recognize he SUCKS AT QB? Please?

will make it as a WR in the NFL? Serious question...

I think he might hang around a few years if not do very well.

Gardner comes out of his experience with M with an education, and bumps bruises and scars.  Meanwhile, the coaching staff has been pulling down major squeeze for 4 years. And that is where the accountability ultimately lies.

I truly thought that Garnder had the ability to be better than Denard, not quite as shifty, but seriously fast and a better passer.  And, I still say he would have been if he had not been cursed with this coaching staff.  I think he could have been good on the order of Marcus Mariota if he had been deployed within the context of the O he was actually recruited for.

And, the one thing that has shown through, irrespective of the cloud of shitty coaching that followed him around, was his guts and his class.  Did he end up as a great michigan QB, sadly not.  But he did have his great moments, and one does not need a shitload of imagination to see him as being great, if he had not been associated with this idiotic coaching regime.

DG deserved better, I hope he gets it in the future. And, I hope who ever is left after the decommitting rampage is done, gets to see better coaching as well. God speed.

Michigan player Devin Gardner consoles OSU quarterback JT Barrett after the kid is out with a broken foot.

OSU player Reid Fragel tweets "Karma at its finest" after Michigan LB Jake Ryan suffers an ACL tear during spring training

(I can't find that tweet right now, but look at this tweet and see who 'favorited' it)

The Michigan difference is thinking that displaying a gesture of sportsmanship is born of being a Michigan player. The truth is that players across the country display this sort of sportsmanship all the time. And other players across the country do not - including players here at Michigan. Gardner made a very nice gesture. But let's not fool ourselves into thinking that its some inherent trait of being a Michigan man. That self-deception is the only Michigan difference I see in this context. Michigan players do nice things, and, as we've seen in the past few years, they also do some pretty bad things. The Michigan difference so far has been using the nice things to define who we are, and ignoring the bad things.

I am the father of a 12 year old son. This was a teachable moment that I pointed out to him. To me, it looks like Devin is praying with JT. Praying over your enemy in a time of crisis shows that Gardner is what every man would want his son to grow up to be. Someone who just made a difference.

this is why we cant have nice things. Weve sucked for so long we have to look to the enemies comments on kind of thinking our player is nice. Seriously? This makes you feel good? The enemy thinks DG was nice? Hell if their QB was as bad as DG and gave them as many losses as hes given us Id not only say hes nice.....Id buy him a trip to Disneyland every fkn year he was in school and 10 years after.
