Friday Posbang + Happy MgoDeer Hunting
Mates,
It is a great Friday with a nice covering of snow, and for a very large segment of the state's population up here, the eve of a virtual holy day - Rifle season for deer hunting starts tomorrow at 0-dark-hundred. I am a bow hunter, but I am glad that people do love to rifle hunt. For those that have never been, the fun and fellowship of deer camp are a treat, many a memory across generations of family and friends has been created this time of year.
Would love to have any MgoDeer Hunters share their plans for this year or favorite stories from past years. Since our beloved Wolverines have a 'bye' this weekend, no excuse to get out of the woods tomorrow.
Hunt safely and have a great weekend. Go blue!

when a disoriented and poisoned coyote strolls through my yard, whic has happened in the middle of the day multiple times. They look all crazed and stuff, scary...

once. I came up out of a six iron and the thing went WAY right. Poor deer never knew what hit him.

Bird hunter here -- like to watch the dogs work. But the best of luck to all braving the weather.
To all -- enjoy your bye week! Oh by the way -- Harbaugh is coming to Michigan because my fortune cookie last night said, "Your Dream Will Be Realized By The End Of This Year"! Screw the new car, better job, perpetual happy wife, million dollars falling from the sky, mother-in-law moving to Bolivia...

I'm not in a postion to replace them (hopefully in about 18 months). Haven't been upland hunting since (athough I am getting out for waterfowl). I assume you're a grouse hunter. How was the season?
November 14th, 2014 at 10:58 AM ^
have another glorious month starting 12/1.

Have fun out there!

All you fellow hunters out there good luck and be safe. Wear your damn harness in the stand!

We get to see them raise the B1G Championship banner! That will be a first for me.
Perfect timing on a bye week! Beat Hillsdale!!!
November 14th, 2014 at 8:46 AM ^
I'm bummed about the timing - sad about missing the banner raising celebration.
Go Blue! Go Hops! Go Hunting! (well, hops should be after hunting)
November 14th, 2014 at 8:20 AM ^
I look at this day/week a little differently than most.
As a wrestling coach this is horrible timing for us. First week of official practice and a third of my starters will be off at their families deer camps!
I can't blame them, hunting is a serious sub-culture, and quality family time/traditions.
Enjoy all! To all you wrestlers out there missing practice, do some knee transfers, hip heists, and some plyometrics in your stands!

Well, at least it isn't half past midnight...

+1.....more if I could......full giggle.

It's Friday that means it's time to BANG!!!!!
November 14th, 2014 at 8:41 AM ^
Hanging our with the ex father- and brother-in-law. I love waterfowl and turkey hunting, and I always feel kinda cold and bored while deer hunting. But I do LOVE venison. Good luck everyone and be safe.
Also, PLEASE HELP ME OUT OF BOLIVIA.... PLEASE.
November 14th, 2014 at 8:48 AM ^
But my posbang comes from your confidence in the goodwill of your ex father-in-law and brother-in-law. Happily, I'm not divorced, but I would not be too comfortable in the woods with guns and an ex's armed family.
Be safe out there!

be trained on her than me (joking). Seriously, maintaining my friendship with my bro in law was a huge deal for me after the divorce.
Hoping to be have a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale or two in me by this time tomorrow. With a deer hanging.

I kid, JBE.
I used to be anti-deer hunting too, since I like deer and feel no need to shoot one. But a hunter friend of mine explained to me that it's essentially a managed crop in MI and similar states. Since we've eliminated so many natural predators of deer, the hunters actually help maintain a balance.
I'd prefer a world where the natural predators kept the population in check. But in the meantime, it's better to me that people hunt than have a good chunk of the deer population succumb to starvation or disease due to overpopulation.
November 14th, 2014 at 9:29 AM ^
calling it a management tool (although it is). When I kill a deer or duck or whatever I do it knowing it really sucks for that animal and I just took something's life that did nothing to me. Further, every hunter occassionally wounds something that he/she can't recover and it's gonna die a bad death (althought it should be noted there are no easy deaths in the woods). That said, we all put pressure on the earth's resources by the nature of our existence (especially here in 'Murica where we live very high on the hog so to speak). By hunting and fishing I connect myself to some of the shit we put the planet through. And I get some delicious food. And I'm pretty sure there is something inside us that makes things like fishing and hunting and berry picking very enjoyable.

I won't be hunting today and the deer are pretty safe from dying if I hit them in my car. I drive a Smart Car and I think it would put me off the road if I hit one.

Be safe out there amongst the Orange army fellers. Shot my biggest buck this year on 10-24. One last Bowhunt tonight and out into the madness tomorrow.

DEER CHILI!!
November 14th, 2014 at 9:52 AM ^
Two of my favorite things in the world. I remember the first time I found an elk chili recipe. First ingredient: "1 lb ground elk". I thought "this is a recipe for manly men!"
I'm normally ambivalent about beans in chili, but with elk and venison, I like more of a black bean chili. Black beans are a little earthier, which seems to pair well with game. Also, guajillo chiles (use dried and make chile colorado - basically traditional enchilada salsa that includes a lot of garlic - as the base) or pasilla chiles are my favorites when making chili this way.
Give it try!
November 14th, 2014 at 10:14 AM ^
with no holes is a danish. And chili with beans is meat soup.
Not chili.
November 14th, 2014 at 10:41 AM ^
and the meat should be cut into 1/2 inch cubes instead of ground... but the chilis sound really good.
November 14th, 2014 at 10:58 AM ^
I am ambivalent (at best, actually) about chili with beans in it, but with elk and venison, the black beans really work. And it's most assuredly not "soup."

Honest question. I have no experience, but I am somewhat interested in taking up archery and maybe bow hunting down the road. Does anyone track and stalk deer anymore? I'm not passing judgement at all, I'm just wondering if that is a viable option. I imagine if everyone is up in a blind, it wouldn't be safe to be walking around on the forest floor. Sorry for the noob question. Thanks!
November 14th, 2014 at 9:37 AM ^
requires some land to roam, so, unless you have access to some private land, you really can't move around much during gun season without really pissing off a lot of your fellow hunters on state land. During bow season you can absolutely move. Although it is likely not quite what you're envisioning..... You'd move extremely slowly, upwind, stopping very frequently to make sure you see him before he sees you. The whole tracking thing obviously involves snow. Good Luck!
November 14th, 2014 at 12:26 PM ^
This is a really ridiculous one...
Is it possible to close the deer's eyes after they are tied to the top of the car? I'm serious. I've never seen one with their eyes closed.
November 14th, 2014 at 12:34 PM ^
without a stitch or some superglue or something. I will say that when I'm lucky enough to kill a deer, I do my best to transport it in a manner that protects both the meat and those members of the public who really don't really want to look at dead animals traveling across the interstate. Cheers Mabel
