First Michigan-Ohio State game day memory.

Submitted by B1GGY smalls on November 23rd, 2018 at 3:13 PM

Just waiting for the game tomorrow and thinking back to the library of games in my mind. Sports were never watched in my home as a kid. My parents didn't like them. I happened to be over one of my relatives home, an older cousin who had a boyfriend stop over and he turned on football. He was really cool about it and explained to me what was happening on the field and I really got into it. I watched the whole game and it happened to be the 10-10 tie with Dennis Franklin as the QB. Cherry broken. That was my first game.

What hooked you?

I just re-watched the '73 game. Down 10-0 in the 4th. That first Lantry FG looked good from like 55 yards.

For me it was 1989. Sat in the student section. The kids were going bezerk. Michigan tore down the goalposts.

I watched Braylon Edwards and Steve Breaston beat OSU in 2003 for my first ever college football game (live or otherwise) and I still remember thinking Rivas was weird for blessing himself all the time.

Rivas was so damn clutch wherenit got to the point where as I was dying for the 2006 OSU game to come down to a game winning kick as I was confident he was going to nail it no matter what.  Heard he’s not someone you want to offer a pouch though to at a bar as he’ll take it and then throw it across the bar just to be a dick

Lol my first isn't fun. When I was a kid I took tennis lessons on Saturday. 1-3 every weekend. After class the older kids would hang around the lobby and catch the college football slate. I caught the back end of John Navarre trying to drive against Ohio State in 2002 as an 8 year old.

I have a vague memory of Musberger calling Harbaugh to Kolesar in '85 though the guarantee game is probably my first real memory from the series.

Funny, but except for Desmond and Charles' punt returns, virtually every indelible memory is from a game played in Columbus.

1984. I was only 7 and barely conscious of the world outside of matchbox cars and Mighty mouse. I just remember hearing the name Byars over and over and over again and thinking it was weird because we were at my Aunt and Uncles house and they lived on Dyar Court, and I remember that I kept wondering why the player had the same name as the street.  7 year olds are weird

I left NJ in the summer of 1969 to pursue my graduate studies at UM (a place where my fondest memories reside). When I went to pay my tuition, I was offered student season tickets, which I gladly opted to buy. So, after attending every home game that fall, I was in the stands for that insanely delicious victory over the #1 ranked Buckeyes. What a memory!!

The first one I can really remember appreciating was Desmond’s Heisman-sealing game.  My first one in person was 97 and I still get chills thinking about Woodson taking that punt back.  My kids were 2 the only time Michigan beat OSU during their lives so I’m really hoping they get to experience a win tomorrow.  Go Blue!!

To be honest, as a kid I thought Michigan-Michigan State was our biggest rivalry.  I was born in '81 and grew up in suburban Detroit.  I remember people wearing blue or green for the Michigan / MSU game and it was always a big deal.  I didn't really think of Ohio State much at all, probably because they weren't very good in that time frame.  From age four to sixteen Ohio State only beat Michigan twice.

What hooked me? The helmets, duh! Then, it was Coach Bo. He recruited me, he just never knew it. I loved listening to Bo on t.v.; he was a great motivator and speaker. An Orator. He was one of my heroes, along with John Wayne, James T. Kirk, and Muhammad Ali. Naturally, my attention turned to our foe. To me, Woody Hayes was a crotchety old man, just plain mean. I didn't understand why anyone would want to play for him. I can't remember the first game, but what I do remember was the anxiety of 'The Game'. As a youngster I was a big worrier over that game. Then, if we won, on to the Rose Bowl worry.

1978 I think, mom and dad took us over to friends house next town over to watch the game. I was too young to care who won or even watch the game.

First one I watched, 1980 Michigan's 9-3 win in Columbus that sent them to Pasadena

First one in person 1984 loss in Columbus.

First one at home 1985 win, Harbaugh to Kolesar

1997.. I was in fourth grade, born and raised in ohio, family full of buckeyes. I was the rebel that always had an affinity toward the winged helmets. It was the first year of Michigan football I really knew what was going on and fully got into. The week leading up to the game I remember at school we had rivalry activities each day and for the Friday before the game painting my face half maize and half blue and getting a couple friends to go along with me to make a giant Michigan Banner with players numbers to hang on the wall of the classroom.

Obviously Woodson was my favorite player and just watching the iconic punt return, the long reception and the interception in the endzone was absolute bliss.. What made it better was watching my brother, who is 2 years older than me, and dad in complete agony as we went on to win!

Harbaugh to Kolesar - 1985.  My father was given a scholarship from India to do his masters and PH.D so he was watching the game.  I was 7 and thought wow you can throw toilet paper and go crazy in a football stadium.

Watching in the living room with my aunt (team dietitian for the fab-5) and uncle (4 year swimmer at UM) and other extended family who were in visiting while my mom was battling breast cancer. I was 11, Tim Biakabatuka running all over them all day, we were going nuts!!! One of the best distractions that year for me/us. Would be great to see some version of that domination again tomorrow!

Wasn't even The Game that hooked me. It was the 1991 (took place Jan 1, 1992) Rose Bowl. First time I remember my dad made a big fancy spread for New Years. Shrimp, beer cheese, club crackers. Got me some sparkling St Julian's NA ( I was 8). We lost. I cried. Never stopped loving being a Michigan fan since then. Winning can make you soft. On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing.

First Michigan-OSU game I watched was 1974, Lantry’s missed field goal at the end.  I became hooked the next year when I attended my first Michigan game and Rick Leach was from my hometown of Flint.

I grew up a Michigan fan. We used to go to a couple games a year, but my first Michigan-OSU memory was getting last second tickets to Desmond Howard's Heisman game. Our neighbors came down with the flu, so I got to go. They were great tickets, too.

I came home from that game, called every person I knew to tell them how amazing the game was, and was hooked for life.

November 21, 1987.    Ann Arbor, Michigan.   The Big House.    I was 11 and went with my dad.  Our seats were damn near the top of that old bowl, but it didn't matter, because I was at the Big House for a Michigan game with my dad.   It was cold, and my Converse Chuck Taylor canvas shoes, which were probably red, were the wrong choice.

Fuckin' Chris Spielman lit it up that day and it was a disappointing outcome.   But it was Michigan Stadium with my dad for Michigan-Ohio State, so it's all good.   I will do the same thing soon with my oldest son.

The first Ohio St/Michigan game that I attended (also first time at the Big House), I was lucky enough to watch the Desmond return and pose.  I was a huge fan prior to that game, but pretty much an addict after.

First memory was hearing everything that happened after Ohio State’s go ahead score in 88, because I, a seven year old, was upset they were going to lose. Then going to the 89 game with my dad the next year to see a title clincher.

I was 5 months old last time Michigan won in Columbus, so my first lasting memories of this game weren't great until watching the 2011 game (and even then it was only a light reprieve). But man was that a great day. Here's hoping for 15 years worth of revenge tomorrow!

I remember some of the games a few years before, but I remember being old enough to take in the whole 1997 game when I was nine years old. I remember seeing that hit on David Boston live and just going crazy.

Freshman year, 1991, Desmond game. Besides the game itself, I remember the Daily editorial which was such a magnificent troll job I have rarely seen its equal since.

1997. I was 7 years old and my dad had taken my brother and I earlier that year to my first game when Baylor came to town. It didn't occur to me at the time how important that season was but I remember sitting with my dad and watching every game I could.

I didn’t avidly watch Michigan until 2006 when I was 10. So my first OSU game was memorable but I’m not very fond of it. The first time I got frustrated by sports ever was Shawn crable late hit. I haven’t seen much success in this game in my life, hopefully this year it turns it all around.

Mine was at my osu grandparents. Them getting super upset about the game. Me not understanding why the guy in blue couldn’t be stopped. They said cause he was really good. I ask why not root for them. They said why. I said Na. Tim Biakabutuka hooked me.

I watched many games before this on tv, but my first in stadium experience vs blohio was my first year of holding season tickets.  1985, Harbaugh to Kolesar for a TD. Michigan offense was in front of where we sit and scored a TD in front of the current student/band section.

2-3 years later, Kolesar had another big catch late in the game vs blohio in blohio stadium.

first UM vs OSU that I attended was 1973 , 10-10 tie.  It was lightly raining when we came in.  I remember that we forgot our corkscrew and had to pound the end of the umbrella to get the cork through the bottle. (yes wine & umbrellas were present everywhere that day)The Schwarz-katze had a little chewy cork taste to the last drop.   I believe there were two FGs missed by Lantry and that one looked totally good.  Franklin gets hurt and the BIG 10 and its dislike of UM voted to send the Buckeyes.  After that, there was such a ruckus --they finally changed the rules that more than one team could finally go to a bowl game.  At a young age my intense dislike for OSU & MSU was stoked eternally that weekend.

1986 M-OSU at the Shoe. First time I watched (or at least paid attention to) a Michigan game. I was hooked immediately. Not a bad first experience and there have only been a handful of games to top it since.

1973 Michigan stadium. Fell in love with the Wolverines listening to Robert Frost Ufer while I worked as a mechanic in Flint Michigan. Finally got tickets to Michigan OSU. The heartbreak year.

Lantry missed just left in the attempt to break the 10 10 tie.  Then an interception and return by michigan. Lantry again. Wide right. I was standing at my section exit. When it missed I hung my head and walked to the car. Great game tho. Glad to be a Michigan Fan.  Been to many games since. Tomorows win will be the best ever tho!!!   Go Blue!

Been waiting for this type of thread.

Not really what “hooked”me, as that happened years earlier, but more of a  “cool story, bro” kind of thing.

It was 1995 and I had just finished my 4 years in the Marines. A friend from high school was on the team ( although never played , which of course we gave him tons of shit for , but still, he was on the flipping team ! ) I received a call from another mutual friend and he says “ hey _____ has tickets for us , but we have to go right now “! So of course we bust ass down the road , during the ride ( 2.5 hours) I get filled in on the details, we are supposed to be incoming freshman swimmers , being recruited, which of course seems a bit shady because I’m 24 years old but who gives a shit, I figure it’s THE GAME , I’m good with that story.

Luckily we get there just in time, and my buddy tells us to go into the tunnel and find the big guy in the blue jacket ( easy enough on a game day in Ann Arbor , right ? ) my other friends all sissy out , so I was like screw it we drove all this way I’ll do it. So I find what I think is the right guy, I approach him and tell him my BS story, and thank god he seems preoccupied, so he hands me the tickets , I turn and start walking away , pretty proud of myself , and I hear “ HEY YOU “ I figure I’m screwed, but running isn’t an option, so I turn around and say “ yes ? “

He says “ can you do me a favor ?”

That favor turned out to be holding the damn banner as the team took the field!!

It is literally impossible to describe the feeling but I can tell you every single hair on my body stood up when the crowd roared and it was a sound that you could actually feel, if I was a swimmer I would have signed up that second, it was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced..... except ... despite being told to hold the banner with both hands, I couldn’t help myself, and Irons was the first player out , so I held the banner with one hand, and put out my other hand to give him a high fIve , which he did , and almost took my damn arm off. I turtled up and gripped that damn banner with both hands for the rest of the team!

It was magical ! And of course the game went pretty well for us that day too

Can't remember the exact one but one of the early 70s games on TV. I watched it at my best friends house. His dad was a Michigan grad and I remember lots of screaming. Guessing 1970 or 1972. 1971 wasn't on TV!
