"final maize-out game of the season"?

Just received this email from the athletic department.

This Saturday is the final Maize Out game of the season. Wear maize and show your Wolverine spirit!

Seriously? They didn't think that the OSU game might be a good time for a maize-out?

...and by that, I mean helter-skelter, willy-nilly and putt-putt!

More people are concerned with staying warm and dry during OSU than with wearing maize. It never works for the cold weather games.

105,000 maize ponchos. This would be the perfect game for a blueout with a maize M in the student section corner, like the blue M they pulled off during the ND and Wiscy maize outs.

Enough people will not do what they need to do to wear maize in this weekends weather conditions.

Sorry to say, but we are not PSU fans. They would not blow one of their whiteouts because of the weather.

It has no effect on pronunciation but rather symbolizes the absence of the letter 's' in words that historically had an 's' in them. For example, the word être used to be spelled "estre" and the word fenêtre (window) used to be spelled "fenestre." It most often appears above the letter 'e' but is sometimes found on 'u' and 'a,' as in bâtiment (building) and bûcheron (woodcutter). As French evolved, the 's' disappeared from many words and thus the accent circonflex became a common feature of the language. The more you know.

Picking and choosing what dates are designated for Maize-outs is almost ridiculous as the blue student t-shirt in 2005 (I think) when they put the color up to a student vote and all the stupid sorority girls all voted for Blue.

I think you're correct from a practical standpoint. If you want to increase participation in maize-outs, have them all the time and people will end up in the habit, and will have massive maize wardrobes (personally, I never dreamed I would own so much yellow) etc. etc.

But there is something to be said for relative effect, or if you want to get fancy, the spirit of the event. There's a difference between something that is exceptional and cool, and something that is routine and cool. Still cool, but one is better.

Let's compare the utility curves for increasing participation in maize-outs by having them more frequently to getting bored with maize-outs by having them more frequently, shall we? Any takers? Anyone? Anyone?

In 2007 when Ohio State came to Michigan, the student section started a movement to make the Ohio State game a maize out. Through word of mouth and well placed emails to the Athletic Department, we had the game officially changed to a Maize Out about a week before the game.

I see the same thing happening again this year. These students are hungry for a win over OSU - we haven't seen it during our time here - and we will do anything to make it possible.

Buy a maize colored M hockey jersey and wear it over your coat.

I'm not sure about you, but $80 feeds me on Saturday nights for weeks/months.

Students can't afford things like that, at least those of us who are paying our own way. Kudos to those who can.

why we use maize? Obviously, fans like to wear their jerseys, but our jerseys are blue and white. Both people who bought an away or home jersey are S.O.L.

I assume most people who come into the big house have a blue shirt, while not many (outside of students) have a maize/yellow shirt. I think a blue-out (read: blowout) would kinda be better because people who have home jerseys can wear them, everyone has a blue shirt, and I feel blue is a bit more intimidating than yellow.

We've tried Blue-Outs (MSU 2002, OSU 2003 immediately come to mind- they sold t-shirts and everything, not to mention the 2005 blue season shirts). It doesn't look like anything. Too dark, blends in with things like hair, jeans, etc.

Maize, however, stands out.

Hence the Neon Maize shirts that go around sometimes.

We had a blue out in 2005 against OSU. Blue outs imo don't really work and don't stand out on tv or in person. Also, against OSU, it only made the osu fans in the stadium stand out even more.
