Nothing and no one ever leave Mississippi....
November 12th, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
Mississippi the Black Hole of the South.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:07 PM ^
He tried to leave, and his career was cursed.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:32 PM ^
...I suspect Jay Hopson has some thoughts on the matter.
November 12th, 2010 at 6:02 PM ^
My thoughts went directly to Hopson too.
November 12th, 2010 at 6:04 PM ^
Jeremy LeSueur (Holly Springs, MS) made it out.
November 12th, 2010 at 6:36 PM ^
had a serious knee injury. (mississippi curse)
November 13th, 2010 at 4:12 AM ^
Brett Favre did.

I'm not much of a GERG supporter, but I'm going to hold off speculating on every single candidate who is thrown out there. Don't get me wrong, I like Bruce Feldman and enjoy having these discussions. But speculating on every name thrown out there when we're going for 7 wins this weekend might not be such a great idea.
November 12th, 2010 at 2:52 PM ^
I mentioned him with Dan Mullen as a possible RR successor if RR got canned (post Penn State gloom). He would be a good addition -- young yet experienced, successful and has Florida ties.
November 12th, 2010 at 2:57 PM ^
if anything....for arguement sake, rivals has Manny Diaz ranked as the 13th best d coordinator. FWIW Casteel is ranked as the 14th best. Gladly take either one...but agree with the otehr posters let's finish this season 1st.
GO BLUE!!
November 12th, 2010 at 2:59 PM ^
Do you have a link to this rivals page?
November 12th, 2010 at 3:06 PM ^
Scott Shafer is #16 on that list. FML.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:09 PM ^
Blows my mind that Calvin Magee isn't on that list for Offensive Coaches.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:12 PM ^
It's because he coaches a gimmick offense that'll never put up big numbers in the Big Ten.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
Good one artds
November 12th, 2010 at 3:17 PM ^
Thanks, I bet we are all scrambling to find out where GERG is.
Edit : I just checked, good thing it's just the top 20.
November 12th, 2010 at 4:40 PM ^
No sign of TCU anywhere on that list. What does a D-coordinator have to do to get noticed?
November 12th, 2010 at 5:56 PM ^
Coach somewhere other than TCU?
November 12th, 2010 at 3:05 PM ^
is a excellent D-cord, I have talked about him for the last couple months
November 12th, 2010 at 3:13 PM ^
Hispanic Head Coach and DC? Quite the anomaly. Anyways, not going to throw GERG to the lions yet, but worth a looking into this guy.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:25 PM ^
Wouldn't that match nicely with a HC with the last name of "RODRIGUEZ?"
November 12th, 2010 at 3:26 PM ^
Except for the fact that Rodriguez isn't hispanic. He's been counted as hispanic even though he doesn't consider himself such. His ancestors immigrated to this country directly from Spain, so he is of European decent.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:39 PM ^
Yes, but he does like tacos
November 12th, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
if the Spanish aren't Hispanic then I don't know who is
November 12th, 2010 at 5:44 PM ^
I recall, it was Spain who "discovered" America...roughly, and named that area, now Haiti & the Dominican Republic, as Hispanola or little Spain. Only people who are born in Spain are considered Spainiards, those born in the U.S. are considered Spanish-Americans; those born in the caribbean or parts of South America are known as Hispanics. The disdain with which Spaniards hold Spanish speaking, non natives attests to this, as anyone who has spent time in Spain can tell you.
November 13th, 2010 at 4:08 AM ^
You're half-right. Typically, hispanic refers to someone who is from (or identifies with roots in) Spain. Hispanic can, but usually doesn't, refer to people from Latin America, who prefer the general term "latino" as it is rooted in the place they come from and not their former conquerers. RR is often referred to as hispanic because his of his last name, which comes from grandfather (great-grandfather?) who came to West Virginia from Spain. I don't know if he strongly identifies with his Spanish roots or if, like many Americans with light skin, he has the privilege of thinking of himself as non-racial, non-ethnic. Whether or not he identifies with the "hispanic" or "latino" labels or whatever is less interesting to me than why do news media outlets feel the need to say he is one or the other. I've never heard Jim Tressel referred to as Ohis State's white head coach. Maybe Tress had a great grandmother from Durban and he wants to be considered African-American. I guess what I'm saying is people are weird about race and phrases like "hispanic" and "latino" just underscore that.

Could that help us recruit a stellar kicker from central/south america or real madrid?
November 12th, 2010 at 3:16 PM ^
(1) Vic Koenning drops off the list after last week's Michigan game. LULZ. (He'll get back on; I just think he ran into a buzzsaw last week).
(2) No Calvin Magee on the offensive coaches list. I realize this is because RichRod gets the majority of the credit for the offensive success, but it's weird to have zero coaches from a top-5 offense on the list. I'd be interested to know the extent to which the other offensive coaches on that list are involved with their respective units - some obviously have carte blanche over the offensive unit, but I'm guessing there's some Magee types on there getting credit for their head coach's talents.
___
EDIT: icefins26 beat me to it regarding (2).
November 12th, 2010 at 3:22 PM ^
Rod Smith deserves as much credit as any of them. That guys can coach up some QB's.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
Yup. Those are the supidest fucking lists I have ever seen.
Pure garbage. I want the last 3 minutes of my life back.

It's very good. Factor in that MSU has to be a hard school to recruit for in the SEC. I'm not sure how long Diaz has been there, but MSU had a good D when Crooms was the coach. Their offense was just dismal though. Mullens has done a nice job there so far. There just isn't a high ceiling there.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
am i the only person who thinks that Rivals list is missing the most obvious answer?
#1 D in FBS
PLUS epic name AND mustache?
November 12th, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
Thank you. I have been saying since 2008 that we just need to open up the check book and get TCU's defensive staff here.
Consistently one of the best in the nation, and recruiting presence in talent rich Texas. Yes Please.
I know I'd prefer Big Ten experience, but I'd gladly waive that for such a high profile staff.
November 12th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
The 11 players on d were rb's or qb's in highschool. They are known for devoloping/forecasting players to new positions. That d is pure speed. I would like to see a dominant recruiter. I think this our biggest weakness.
November 12th, 2010 at 4:46 PM ^
At least UM needs to send the D coaches down to TCU to study the 4-2-5. Possibly hire one of the up and comming assistant coaches and bring him up. This 3-3-5/3-4/4-3 back and forth is getting tired. Have a base D and perfect it.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
A) Big Ten experience.
B) Will be involved in recruiting
3) Doesn't pick nose on sideline and rub it on leg
Q) Doesn't believe in 3-man D-lines except for 3rd and 15+
8) Strong willed enough to tell Rich to eff off when he tries completely retooling the defense in week 8 like he has for three straight years now.
~) Knows how to teach tackling and not just shin angles.
November 12th, 2010 at 5:08 PM ^
Dick LeBeau
Tony Dungy
Bob Stoops
... and my wife has just swapped bodies with Scarlett Johansson.
November 12th, 2010 at 6:10 PM ^
Why Big Ten experience? What if a guy has coached in the SEC? Would you really count that as a negative?
November 12th, 2010 at 9:10 PM ^
Does anyone believe that Trgovac is even an option? It seems great, I just dont know if he'd be willing to leave the NFL for college.
