Feldman: New DC for '11?

Submitted by UMphd on

Just got through on Bruce Feldman's CFB chat on ESPN.com with a question about a new DC for 2011.

His reply: "I'll throw out Manny Diaz from Miss. State. He's young and has done a super job in the SEC."

Uhh, OK.

E-pinions on this?

I'm not much of a GERG supporter, but I'm going to hold off speculating on every single candidate who is thrown out there.  Don't get me wrong, I like Bruce Feldman and enjoy having these discussions.  But speculating on every name thrown out there when we're going for 7 wins this weekend might not be such a great idea.

I mentioned him with Dan Mullen as a possible RR successor if RR got canned (post Penn State gloom).  He would be a good addition -- young yet experienced, successful and has Florida ties.

if anything....for arguement sake, rivals has Manny Diaz ranked as the 13th best d coordinator.  FWIW Casteel is ranked as the 14th best.  Gladly take either one...but agree with the otehr posters let's finish this season 1st.

I recall, it was Spain who "discovered" America...roughly, and named that area, now Haiti & the Dominican Republic, as Hispanola or little Spain.  Only people who are born in Spain are considered Spainiards, those born in the U.S. are considered Spanish-Americans; those born in the caribbean or parts of South America are known as Hispanics.  The disdain with which Spaniards hold Spanish speaking, non natives attests to this, as anyone who has spent time in Spain can tell you.

You're half-right.  Typically, hispanic refers to someone who is from (or identifies with roots in) Spain.  Hispanic can, but usually doesn't, refer to people from Latin America, who prefer the general term "latino" as it is rooted in the place they come from and not their former conquerers. RR is often referred to as hispanic because his of his last name, which comes from grandfather (great-grandfather?) who came to West Virginia from Spain. I don't know if he strongly identifies with his Spanish roots or if, like many Americans with light skin, he has the privilege of thinking of himself as non-racial, non-ethnic. Whether or not he identifies with the "hispanic" or "latino" labels or whatever is less interesting to me than why do news media outlets feel the need to say he is one or the other. I've never heard Jim Tressel referred to as Ohis State's white head coach. Maybe Tress had a great grandmother from Durban and he wants to be considered African-American. I guess what I'm saying is people are weird about race and phrases like "hispanic" and "latino" just underscore that.

(1) Vic Koenning drops off the list after last week's Michigan game.  LULZ.  (He'll get back on; I just think he ran into a buzzsaw last week).

(2) No Calvin Magee on the offensive coaches list.  I realize this is because RichRod gets the majority of the credit for the offensive success, but it's weird to have zero coaches from a top-5 offense on the list.  I'd be interested to know the extent to which the other offensive coaches on that list are involved with their respective units - some obviously have carte blanche over the offensive unit, but I'm guessing there's some Magee types on there getting credit for their head coach's talents.

EDIT: icefins26 beat me to it regarding (2).

It's very good. Factor in that MSU has to be a hard school to recruit for in the SEC. I'm not sure how long Diaz has been there, but MSU had a good D when Crooms was the coach. Their offense was just dismal though. Mullens has done a nice job there so far. There just isn't a high ceiling there.

Thank you.  I have been saying since 2008 that we just need to open up the check book and get TCU's defensive staff here.

Consistently one of the best in the nation, and recruiting presence in talent rich Texas.  Yes Please.

I know I'd prefer Big Ten experience, but I'd gladly waive that for such a high profile staff.

A) Big Ten experience.

B) Will be involved in recruiting

3) Doesn't pick nose on sideline and rub it on leg

Q) Doesn't believe in 3-man D-lines except for 3rd and 15+

8) Strong willed enough to tell Rich to eff off when he tries completely retooling the defense in week 8 like he has for three straight years now.

~) Knows how to teach tackling and not just shin angles.
