Exit: Rick Finotti - Defensive Analyst
Defensive analyst Rick Finotti is leaving - one of 6 analysts - to coach a Div 3 program (John Carroll) in OH. He was head coach of St. Edward in 0hio prior to being scooped up. It will be interesting to see if Harbaugh goes back to the HS ranks to fill this spot... and which HS. I believe with the loss of Jimmie Doughtery, that leaves 2 analyst slots open.
Source tells FootballScoop Michigan analyst Rick Finotti will be new head coach at John Carroll University https://t.co/ppxU2CWIrn

There are probably 6 spots open in all. JH was adding two more analysts in the summer. One on offense and one defense. Rick will be missed!

Two are new positions. Former FBS position coaches are leaving staff support jobs to be postion coaches at Oregon and Fresno. We are fortunate to get such highly qualified people to take lower level positions here in the first place. We lost Erik Campbell the same way the year before and if we hire more people like that, they won't stay long either. It's the nature of the profession. Finotti took a HC job in his hometown. It's Division 3, but the last guy left for an FCS HC job. It's a way to move up.

Looks like a very decent dude.
Should hire him even if Soloman does not come.

Looks like soloman is the new rudddddock, didn't think this would be a thing after the BBQ thank-you fiasco

Yes, Andy Salmon is the new Jake Rudddock, but not for the reason you think.

I hope that we hired Partridge because he was qualified. It sure looks like he was. Same with Bush.
Maybe people are being sarcastic, but it doesn't seem like it.

That's a straw man argument. We know that the NCAA should address oversigning, illicit benefits, etc. We know the NCAA is a joke. However, the question here is about hiring people connected with a recruit in order to gain an advantage in the kid's recruitment.
We know that Mama Gwen, Devin Bush, Chris Partridge, and Bam Richards were qualified. However, the current rules allow a school to hire a recruit's father/mother/coach/uncle to be "Awesomeness Analyst." In other words, meaningless jobs that are invented just to try to convince the recruit to sign with your school.
Are we really OK with taking that path? Are we really OK with Harbaugh hiring people JUST to get a well-regarded recruit? I know he wouldn't do that. However, would it get our stamp of approval if he did?
January 18th, 2017 at 11:59 AM ^
the discussion above also said he's a good coach in his own right.
One poster even said we should hire him regardless of whether or not Solomon comes.
If they're qualified AND it helps, I think it's okay. Borderline okay, maybe (n' maybe I could be persuaded to see it differently) -- but okay.
January 18th, 2017 at 3:26 PM ^
The strawman argument is that the NCAA doesn't know how to regulate properly, so ANY regulation they propose is bad.
I agree with you that hiring the coach/mother of a recruit should be ok IF they are qualified. What I was asking was if we'd be alright with Harbaugh hiring somebody ONLY for the recruiting implications. I don't think he does, but would we be alright with it if he did?

So is it OK that they did that? This gets precisely to my point.
If it isn't OK, then how do you resolve the situation? I don't think there's a way to prohibit unqualified hires that are made for recruiting purposes (Georgia) while allowing qualified hires that also happen to help with recruiting (Michigan).
And if we want to accept the good with the bad (allowing all hires), then does that mean we are OK with Harbaugh hiring the coaches / mothers of recruits just because it increases the chances of landing that recruit?

Shula for sure is the greatest sports alum from JCU. Went there for undergrade. The football stadium (soccer, lacross, field hockey, etc. It is a D-3 school after all and they dont have space for seperate fields for each sport) is named after him. Also, London Fletcher went to JCU as well. He is a four time pro-bowler and played in the NFL for 15 years.

Yes sir, graduated in 2011 (...ish). What about you?
January 19th, 2017 at 2:14 PM ^
I didn't go to JCU (spent my undergrad in Ann Arbor), but I was a ball-boy for the basketball team for five or six years in the eighties, attended just about every home football game between '77 and '95 (with one year off somewhere in there -- and to be fair, the first several years weren't by choice), attended the summer sports camp around the same years I was helping out the basketball team, worked for the Alumni Association for my first paying software gig in high school, and generally lived on the campus until I started college. Can I be a Blue Streak too? ;-)
Regarding this news: Tom Arth was an acquaintance of my brother's -- both Ignatius football players -- and he seems like a good guy and a great coach. The UT-Chattanooga people are pretty annoyed they got a D3 coach from what I've heard, but they'll love him soon enough. I really hope Finotti does well at Carroll; that program's been blowing up under Arth.

Assuming this is going to be a task prioritization exercise in which the position coach and recruiting staffer are high priority hires and the analyst positions are taken care of later. Hope this is it for the carousel for this year as signing day is coming fast.
