Exceeded / Fell Short of Expectations - 2014 Individual Players [Offense]

Submitted by alum96 on

TL;DR - most offensive players played below expectations.

Well it was a rough year and you are what your record shows you are.

Thought I'd take a look at individual pieces and see who exceeded expectations coming into the season and where we fell flat.   This is with the Josh Furman caveat - maybe the coaching has a lot to do with things, and with a different staff these guys would be performing better.  There were a few very bright spots but a lot of below expectations as well.  Second caveat - I am sure they are all great people (mostly); this is about football.

QBs

  • Devin - way below expectation.  5th year senior expected to lead the team, outplayed by guys with similar talent in their 1st years starting at OSU, Arizona, etc.
  • Shane - below expectation.  Regression in short time on field.  Coach's unwilling to ever go back to him despite struggles/injury of Devin speaks volumes.

RBs

  • Green - flat vs expectation.  A more trim Green was expected to improve from disappointing freshman campaign and he did.  Is he a lights out star? No.  But showed some acceleration at second level.  Vision lagged early but seemed to improve as year went by.  Still too easily brought down.
  • Smith - below expectation.  He is what he is.  Hard runner who gets YAC but that first hit usually comes early.  With a better OL he probably can be a punishing guy who smashes the first linebacker who hits him but when its a defensive tackle not much happens.
  • Johnson - above expectation.  This is mostly on OSU game as the Indiana game was against a HS defense.  Huge drop off in run production minute Johnson exited vs OSU.  Plays with determination like Smith but has good vision, runs north and south, and obvious speed.  Major question as to why coach's had him so low on depth chart.
  • Hayes - flat.  Like Smith he is what he is.  A change of pace back who is limited.  Nice speed but that's about it.  Had opportunity for playing time late in year and didn't grab it like Johnson did.

FB

  • Kerridge - above expectation.  Another guy almost ignored all year until last few games, and played well.   There should be room for a 5-6 plays a game for a guy like this.

TE

  • Butt - flat only due to lack of use.  I think Butt might be the best position player on the offense.  But he is horribly underutilized.  If he would see the ball 6x a game this grade would be "way above expectation" IMO.  Can remember 1 flat out drop all year and other than that sticky fingers, not a lot of obvious blocking blowups, and a weapon.  That we ignored.
  • Williams - below expectation.  Expectations were low and he fell short of them.  As a 3rd year player he blocks poorly, and a complete non threat to catch the ball.
  • Hill - incomplete.  Hill seemed to be finding his way in the offense the week before he got injured.  That is so Michigan 2014.

WR

  • Funchess - way below expectation.  Obviously the 2 Devins are connected, one cannot play well with the other.  But after halftime of the App State game and before the OSU game Funchess had 1 TD all year.  That's criminal for a man of his talent.  Injury was an issue but post Utah game he seemed like a man thinking about the NFL and protecthing his body.  Didn't lay out for balls, dropped quite a few catchable balls, did not outrun Rutgers/Maryland level DBs.   Was expected to lead a young offense and simply was nowhere near what he should have been.
  • Darboh - flat.  Was a mystery but with reports of #2 WR next to Gallon coming out of 2012 camp before injury, there was a good level of expectation.  He matched that.  Some games on, some games disappeared but much of that was on Devin never finding 2nd options in his reads.   Improved as the year went on.
  • Chesson - below expectation.  Was expected to either be the #2 or #3 WR.  Not targeted much, and little improvement on his 15 catches the prior year.  Even blocking - his calling card for 2013 - didnt seem to be as obvious of a strength.
  • Norfleet - flat.  Another "he is is what he is".  Some parts of the blogosphere believe this to be the greatest unused asset on the team but he is not as fast as those people think, and his size is a detriment even in the slot.  A bit player, and should be viewed as such.
  • Canteen - below expectation.  Expectations were unfair due to strong spring.  That said he was a complete non factor until OSU game with a great catch.  Dropped a simple pass vs Maryland and looked overwhelmed.  Hopefully this is first year blues with a QB who never found him and next year his hands catch up to his fast feet.

OL

  • Miller - above expectation.  Many did not want to see this man see the field in 2014 based on poor early 2013.  He wasn't great but serviceable.  And that is way above expectation of total bust.
  • Kalis - below expectation.  I am being tough on the young man in relation to Jack Conklin at MSU.  Conklin is a walk on from same class playing a tougher role at left tackle and did not give up a sack 2 years in a row.  Not expecting that from Kalis but an up and down 2nd year starting (mostly).  Was he bad? No.  Was he good? No.  For a 5 star and the most "college ready" guy from his class he has been below expectation.
  • Braden - flat.  Hopes were not high for Braden coming into the year and he basically met them.  An ok first year; below the standard of what UM needs at the position but again many thought coming into the year he'd have troubles.
  • Glasgow - flat.  Was considered the best returning lineman ... yes it was a low bar. And he seemed to mostly play like it.  Not great but for a former walk on, he is sufficient.
  • Cole - above expectation.  Expectations were for some LOL moments from a true freshman left tackle and they were actually far and few apart.  Yes there were some turnstile moments - it happens when you play a position you should be watching your freshman year (and for most guys your RS FR year), rather than playing.  Now this was the most college ready freshman on the OL the last 3 years - future very bright.
  • Magnuson - below expectation.  Was expected to be left tackle.  Then Cole took the position.  Then expected to be left guard.  Played, then injured.  Then never got back into the rotation.  Maybe that speaks to Glasgow.   Turned into an emergency TE by end of year but for a player expected to be a starter on OL it was a strange campaign.

Overall - no surprise this year sucked on offense.  The 2 upperclassmen star skill players pooped most of the year post App State.  The other star skill player - Butt - was injured early, then ignored most of the rest of the year.   The highly rated RBs were ok not great; the best RB by end of year was a guy ignored for first 8 games.  Secondary WR help was basically 1 player (Darboh) all year - who most games Funchess was healthy was ignored due to QBs ability to find him.   The line was better than 2013 but that is an extremely low bar.  A true freshman may have been the 2nd best linemen which says alot about those coached by Funk for multiple years.   Not many players exceeded expectations.

Never too early 2015 thoughts - just about everyone comes back but the 2 Devins (Devin #2 mentally checked into the NFL about 2 months ago is graded 1st/2nd round - he gone) leave.   OL will be seasoned with potential stud at LT, RB battle will be fierce - guy like Smith could be 4th string, Butt will be Butt.  Need star WR and secondary WRs to emerge,  Or could just be WR by committeee next year unlike past 2 years with primary WR getting tons of attention.  Most important - need QB to emerge from space and time to steer this unit.

Totally disagree on OL. Before this year, expectations were extremely low. By the end of the year they were a strength.  Maybe one of them or possibly two were below expectations but the unit as a whole was a pleasant surprise. Honestly none of them were below for me, based on last year, not on their recruitingi rankings.

If your expecations were "as abominable as last year" then yes, they exceeded expectations, but its still a bit of stretch to call them a "strength" IMO.  They have had some decent moments, and then there are days like today where they got manhandled quite a bit by OSU's DL.  But they are decent enough now that you can see that they could conceivably grow into a great, Michigan-level OL in a year or two.

But, the premise of this post is exceed expecatations.  They clearly did.  Are they the 1997 line, no way.  But they are soooooo much better than last year.

DG did not help them with his pocket presence and overall throwing. They gave him plenty of time (against good defenses). When Drake came on the rushing took off.  The OL was solid not great.

to communicate with the rest of us.

The topic of conversation was in regards to expectations.  And because someone thinks that the entire OL shouldn't be characterized as failing to meet expectations, you come back with a STUPID statement that it must mean that the poster was happy about the offensive output this season.

No one is happy about the offensive output this season.  But if you honestly don't think the OL was better than last year's, and you don't think that at the very least Jack Miller exceeded expectations for his level of play this season, then you're as hopeless as the homers who will predict UM to win 10 games next season.

The only glimmer of hope exiting this year is perhaps a bit of gelling on the OL, strictly in terms of run blocking. Collectively, they are pass blocking sieves, and there hasn't been a lick  of improvement. Funk needs to go, and surely will.

The receivers suck. We need a burner to stretch the field. The drops have been butal.  New coach needed here, too.

RB's - feels like we're loaded going into next year. A better coach than FJ will help. Wheatley's just a call away. If not, Mike Hart.

QB- shitshow.  Borges/Nusmeier at QB coach has been an unmitigated disaster.  Please Mr, Harbaugh, hire a dedicated QB coach for Shane, Speight, Malzone and whomever is left.

TE - schematically work out a way to make Butt a better part of our offense please.  Completely underutilized.

Johnson - above expectation. This is mostly on OSU game as the Indiana game was against a HS defense. Huge drop off in run production minute Johnson exited vs OSU. Plays with determination like Smith but has good vision, runs north and south, and obvious speed. Major question as to why coach's had him so low on depth chart.

I guess if I had any question at all that I could pose to this staff, one that bothers me more than most, it is indeed the "Johnson question". I would really love to know what it was that kept him out of games - perhaps aside from lingering jitters about the knee - earlier in the season when I think this sort of RB play would have come in handy.

It seems like the staff might actually be decent in identifying talent when they're recruiting, but bad at determining who should be playing once they get here. The Drake situation really makes me wonder who else we have on the roster that is hiding that should have been on the field instead. The best guys should be playing regardless of class and I don't think that always has happened under Hoke. Like with his coordinators & assistants, Hoke is loyal/stubborn to a fault.

I doubt we'll ever found out the truth, but it would be it would be interesting to know.  I think there is some plausible possibilites beside "everyone on the coaching staff is an idiot."  The most likely culprit is probably pass protection.  I seem to recall Hayes coming into the game in passing situations, even before Drake got hurt.  This would probably have become a tell if we did it all season, but its the sort of thing you can sort of get away withon  the last game of the season.

The only thing I can think of is they were taking it slow with his knee but then again Butt was out there for ND.  Of course, different people heal at different speeds.

Considering that when Brian was doing UFR's at the early part of the year, one of the constant themes in the running game seemed to be there were yards to be had but the RB's (Green/Smith) weren't hitting the holes it's a little frustrating to see a guy like Johnson emerge, really only due to Green's injury.  Johnson seems to have really good vision, makes the decisive cut and is quick when he makes the cut.

Aside from QB play and Funchess, most would say the players performed roughly to expectation or even better.

In other words, we had a lack of upperclassman on offense and those we did have (who were critical to a successful season) underperformed.

With solid and consistent QB play and a few less drops, we could be having a very different discussion right now about the coaching staff.

But, we got what we got.

It all fell short of expectations, every last piece of this team. The offense sucked. The defense was average at best.

I admire the effort, but wins are what matters. Hopefully the next coach understands that.

that wr class two years ago has really set the wr corps back a few years. whoever the next coach is will have his hands full on offense. not to mention not taking a qb before the Morris class was a stupid move.

Lost us a lot of games this year between ints and dropped passes. QB and WR underperformed. RB and OL exceeded expectations, but that is partly because expectations were so low.

I want to be optimistic because I really feel like the offensive line could be pretty could and we should have a capable stable of backs, but I am very worried that we won't have a competent QB. Also outside of Butt we don't really have any proven receivers.

The new offense didn't work.  That is squarely on the coaching staff: not any individual players.  I feel sorry for players who worked so hard only to get let down by a system that told opponents where they were going to be at pretty much any moment of any game.

I refuse to throw any players under the bus this time around, no matter how disappointing the outcomes were.

With a QB that can't throw farther then 10 yards, struggles reading defenses, is injury prone behind a struggling (but improving) oline facing stacked boxes... Toss in a few drops by WR... What offense are you supposed to craft out of that?

I like the direction of the O, but it takes time to put in the system esp with the above limitations

I'm quite positive about the offense going into next season. Will be fascinating to see how the RB battle shakes out - I flat out love how Johnson attacks the LOS. QB may be bumpy with Speight starting.

Like last season, I feel our playing Ohio State tough will lead to unreasonable expectations for next year.  We had a nighmare season, let's not let 2+ quarters of decent football erase that.  No bowl game and that might be a good thing after last year's embarrassment at our bowl game.

There is not a good argument that we'll be better next season no matter who the coach is, hope I eat those words, but that it how I feel.

Mocha Cub

I think it all depends on how the offensive line and run game progress. With Isaac, Drake and Green we could conceivably do what LSU does and just run all day and eat up time off the clock. Have the QB be a game manager and hope that we have a defense that doesn't crumble during the final minutes of either half. I don't expect much out of the offensive next year at all, but I think that turnovers could be WAY down, which would actually put next year's offense ahead of this year's.

alum96

I'll take a different tact.  I think the RB has enough complimentary pieces to be decent, enough guys exist to be 2-3 deep.  The OL will be seasoned.  They should be average next year as the floor.  I dont think the ceiling is "great" for the OL but it should be a range between average to above average.  Again that is not elite, great, or well above average.

It will all depend on the QB next year to make it a balanced offense.  In many ways this offense is tailor made now for Jimbo to show up.  He loves run based offenses with TEs.  And he develops QBs.  I mean this damn thing is set up for him.

We had a very average team that led the Big 10 (since 2007) in turnovers.  If we had cut turnovers in half we probably win 3 more games.  Which is not a great season but its a 8 win season and thats just fixing 1 of the myriad of issues.

All that said I think any coach comes in and we lose to Utah and struggle with BYU - but I am more looking out to 2016 at this point.   We have a pretty tricky non conf slate next year.

1. I want everybody to get bigger over the summer especially the WR , Shane, and Cole. While the O-line works on being more explosive off the ball which they were today.

2. I want the RBs to read holes faster. Seemed like a problem for most of the season

3. If we are going to be a committee we need to establish two more recievers to be able to be good. I see them being Chesson and Canteen with Harris and Ways being wild cards for next year. It would be nice to see Bo Devers to take over Dileos role in the offense.

4. Lastly, Shane needs to improve on accuracy and decsion making. He looks good in the pocket, with the limited time we have seen him, but he needs to be more accurate and make better decisions. He waits til someone is open to throw it instead of throwing it open.

ANYONE was above expectations.

Even Mason Cole, if you're the starting LT for Michigan, the expectations is pretty fucking high. So while he may be a freshman, that's the expectaton.

He may be "meets expectation."

But the vast majority of the offense, in fact, every other player would be "below expectations."

Same with the defense. I'd give Jourdan Lewis a "meets expectation" and maybe Taco Charlton, as he met my expectations for a backup DE.

But no one passed them and a lot of guys were below expectation.

This was the first year in my life time we had ZERO playmakers on either side of the ball.

Not even a Brandon Graham, who was a monster during a bad Rich Rod year.

We had a handful of medicore and a shit ton of SORRY.

Go watch us when we were good if you want to see expectations. Watch this Alabama/Auburn game if you want to see expectations. Watch OSU. Watch MSU. Watch Stanford over the past few years.

It's not just Michigan expectations. The expectation is to be elite. The expectation is to be a leader and the best. I didn't make them, you didn't make them --- that's what they are when you want to be a major college football program.

We rarely met expectations on either side of the ball or on the sideline.
