ESPN Postulates 3 big changes coming for Wolverines
http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/travis-haney/post/_/id/3557/big-changes…
I'm a believer that the more you see this stuff, the more likely it is to become real. The court of media is very convincing (Just ask Winston) no matter if it is how it should be or not. It's one thing to have blogs and sidebar sports sites saying Hoke has a hot seat. When ESPN starts pushing the "It's a done deal" line things tend to sprial out of control.
MOD EDIT - the entire article plus what was behind the Insider link was posted in here. Let's try to leave some value for the authors themselves, please. - LSA

and a terrible O. Utah's high scoring offense was held to 6 points and <200 yards in the first half before it started to get to 'ah f*ck it' territory for the D. Notre Dame was held to <300 for the game (as was Utah) and they summarily pwned App St and Miami

Go watch the replay of his last game. I'd prefer the guy on the other sideline. Young, midwest roots, one hell of a good guy, and he's built on being physical. When Mississippi State punches LSU in the mouth in Death Valley, that's quite a statement.

Mullen is someone to look as is Butch Jones from Tennessee. Both are spread guys though. I highly doubt either will be considered because of the promise of a lengthy transition. Michigan needs to win now.

...wouldn't leave Tennessee. He's a southern type guy and just got started there, recruiting well, etc.
Would it change your mind to learn that he's a Rich Rodriguez disciple?

We can spend the next couple of years trying to run a spread with Shane Morris, and in the meantime recruit we'll recruit a dual-threat QB we can try to shoehorn into a pro-style offense under the next coach when that doesn't work.

Jalen Rose says that Hoke should apologize, then all is well again

At some point, I think, it does come down to these fairly objective facts:
"They had RecruitingNation’s No. 6 class in 2013, and No. 5 class in 2012. Shouldn’t those players be hitting their stride about now? If not, why not?"
We see many examples of the talent on the field. We do not see these kids playing with cohesion or confidence.
I really do think this is something of a write-off year. And if it's clear that Hoke isn't cutting it then Nuss should be made interim coach. I do not have any particular belief that he should be the long-term guy, but I do think that the players might respond. And I would give money to see what Nuss did differently.

The line is getting better but Garndner is locking on a receiver and telegraphing his throws.
I don't think that either Harbaugh or Miles is coming to Michigan but, if I were looking for a new coach, I would certainly turn to them for a advice on who to hire. I have been at other schools that used coaches with past connections to the school as an informal screening commitee.

Insider information? Connection to Michigan?
An article of this nature may have some credibility if John Bacon wrote it, but JB is too shrewd to write something along these lines.
JB may express some of this thoughts about how the athletic administration has taken a turn for the worse as it emphasized business rather that sport, but speculation of this nature is pure guessing by a guy without any credible relationship to the Michigan program.
The concept of a new president of UM who has been in office less than 90 days pushing the athletic director out the door seems pretty far fetched to me. That is so unlike the Michigan way that it is silly.
Any speculation regarding Brady Hoke's future probably has some legs, but Travis Haney has no more information than you or me..........you being a whole bunch or fans on this blog who do know a hell of a lot more about this team than I do.
Travis Haney's postulation seems more like mental masturbation.........to me at least, but free speech is a wonderful thing.

What scares me is the house cleaning/attrition/starting over aspects of a coaching change. I think it's obvious we need change, but I am not prepared to suffer through beginning anew for 3rd time 7 or so years.

*3rd time IN 7 or so years.

There is absolutely no need to "start over" if they change coaches. They can find someone who wants to to run a similar offensive system. I doubt there is a coach alive who wouldn't want the defensive talent at Michigan, and unless they go to a 3-3-5, they can make it work for their system.

UM has plenty of talent. Whomever takes over will have a lot of talent to work with. You just nned a guy who can coach and is flexible. Both Rodriguez and Hoke. had serious failings in these areas.

I'm picking up what you're laying down, and intellectually I can agree with you. The pessimist in me that has watched this program tear itself down since 2007 is not as easily convinced. That pessimist sees a new OC, new DC, transfers and another lost recruiting class.

I think it's more painful to watch a team not progressing at all, and in fact moving backwards in some areas, after 4 years than it is to watch a team struggle in year 1 as it moves towards something better.

I think Hoke and Brandon were duped into believing what the fanbase wanted was to go back to "manball" or pro-style when all anyone really wants is winning! They somehow convinced themselves that the style of play had to be by a power running game. That is not what everyone was saying with the end of the RR years. Whether or not it is a spread or with pro-style it is about being good on both sides of the ball and winning football games.

To think I got railed for asking for starting the thread that asked if Utah was Hoke's biggest game yet. This is why I asked that question, because this loss has initiated the beginning of the end for him
September 21st, 2014 at 5:09 PM ^
the abuse you got was unwarranted at the time and you are fully vindicated in asking the question.

How about we get a coach that knows how to coach off/def/st? Is that too fucking hard?
September 21st, 2014 at 5:26 PM ^
For some reason, my posts are only visible to me so I'm going to entertain myself here...
"Self, how do you feel about Hoke these days?"
-Well, I have been a big supporter and I'm disappointed. Hard to defend the product on the field (at least the offensive side. oh, and special team...also hard to defend."
"Interesting. So, self, are you going to get the new iphone?"
-Don't know. Seems big and I don't really need it.

Excellent insight! +1 to you dahblue!
(still unsure about that iphone)

We need an entire reboot. It should go (figuratively) something like this:

What should asked is how the last successful HC search was conducted. That would be the one done by Don Canham and resulted in the hiring of Bo Schembechler. If I recall correctly, Canham's approach was pretty simple. He just asked the experts to ID the best coach. In 1968, if fans had been asked to identify the best coach to replace Bump Elliott, virtually none of them would have said 'Bo Schembechler'. Bo was A pretty good MAC coach, by the way.

Strategies from 1968 may be outdated. In this case, I think that they are definitely not optimal.

Could our new OC be the new coach? Maybe he was hired to take over. Would be interesting.
September 21st, 2014 at 6:35 PM ^
Hard to make a case for Nuss as the head coach after the offense has failed to make it into the red zone in its only two tests this year.
September 21st, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
"Outdated" - does that apply to Bo's 1968 coaching philosophy and values or is it limited to HC search methodolgies?

Mullen is an interesting choice. Not a bad one, but still a bit of a plan "B" to me. To be a plan "A" candidate, I would want him to have at least one big home run season. He is playing in a tough division and losing the overwhelming majority of those games. It's really hard to evaluate a guy like this. Most of his wins have come against utter garbage teams. Last year, for example, his 7 wins came against Alcorn State, Troy, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Rice. Ole Miss is the only team there that isn't shit. In 2012, his wins came against Jackson State, Auburn (who sucked badly), Troy, South Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State, and Arkansas. That year, they shit the bed completely against Northwestern in the bowl game in a manner reminiscent of some of Hoke's worst losses. It wouldn't be a terrible hire, but the guy is unproven to me.
I think that we have enough money and prestige to get a guy with a proven track record, such as Kyle Wittingham or Bronco Mendenhall -- two guys winning out west with outstanding track records.
