...was the Aneurysm of Leadership, our first victory at Breslin in the 21st century, and the turning point of John Beilein's tenure at Michigan.

I was 22 and a WMU student back then. No school and no work for several days, but my roommates and I borrowed a sled and walked a mile through the blizzard to the nearest party store for essentials. They had already sold out their kegs before we got there but we made good with other "refreshments".

Snowmobiles, x-country skis, and toboggans were also essential.

My Goddaughter/niece just turned 44 today. My sister was 3 weeks early when the sudden steep drop in barometric pressure caused her to go into labor, my brother-in-law was 15 miles away working 3rd shift and couldn't even get out of the parking lot because of the intensity of the blizzard.  Worse yet, their home was in the middle of nowhere midway between GR and Middleville.

911 sent a snowplow, an ambulance, and for the last few miles, a snowmobile to pick her up and get her back to the hospital---thankfully safely on time---to deliver their healthy baby girl.  Her daddy didn't get to see her until about 36 hours later.

Yes, that was 1/26. I was in the 9th grade. I stayed up all night walking around the house and measuring snow drifts, since I knew school was going to be closed. The surface and 850mb low deepened so much that warmer air wrapped around the low and Detroit and the suburbs had sleet and freezing rain keeping snow amounts down to around 10" A bit farther west there was 20 or more inches of snow.

Also, 1/28/77 we had the great ground blizzard across southern Michigan. My school closed at noon that day and my bus got stuck in a snow drift. I had to walk 2 miles home in a blizzard. Fun times, that when everyone was saying we were on a verge of an ice age.

I do remember watching this game, and thinking that suddenly - in ways not yet defined at that time - that Michigan basketball had finally had this epiphany of sorts, and that it could only get better and better after that. That really was almost worthy of an episode of James Burke's "The Day The World Changed", if he had ever bothered to do a sports version of it.

While at the Final Four in San Antonio in 2018, I approached Zack Novak in a restaurant and told him he was a big reason why we were in Texas. He was with a boisterous table of friends and really didn’t know what to say but he did smile. I referenced the game at Breslin on 1/27/11 and he said Thanks.

Very cool moment.

I imagine a Chris Farley/Paul McCartney type interaction here.

"Uh remember that one time... you uh... got real mad and stuff and kinda freaked out?"

Novak - "yeah"

"That was pretty cool huh? Never mind that was a stupid question. IDIOT.. Dumb stupid.. damn it"

Just bustin balls my man that is very cool and I would be right there with you yammering on about what a great moment that was. Only slightly less great was my quote above from Darius Morris telling the Spartans to get the fuck off his court. That was when shit got real!

Hate State week!  LFG!  Let's do it again Saturday.

Was just looking some things up about this rivalry.  Some interesting facts:

  • There have only been 18 games in which both teams were ranked in the AP top 25.  Twelve (!!) of them have been in the last 11 years since this game.  MSU is 11-7 in such games after winning the last four.
  • Michigan has won just twice more in EL since this game 11 years ago (2014 and 2018).
  • Michigan State has won three times in Ann Arbor since this game 11 years ago (2015, 2016 and 2019)
  • Michigan has the longest winning streak at 12 games from 1921 to 1927.  They lead the series 95-86.
