Each of Green's & Smith's runs...

Submitted by bamf16 on

These are the running plays for both Green and Smith.  Last night I replied that I'd let both guys get 14-18 carries as long as both were producing to keep them fresh, given their sizes and styles make each interchangeable with the other.  And I replied that my OL would be Cole-Mags-Glasgow-Kalis-Braden going into S. Bend.  Conclusions at end.

(Made it a separate thread b/c some people don't like lengthy posts like this!)

1. First and 10, draw to Green for gain of 1.  Cole and Miller do nothing but clog the middle as each gets pushed back by their man. Green could have bounced outside but DB was filling gap.  Hole not as bit as it seemed when watching live.

2. Green loses a yard on a stretch run from shotgun.  Joey B shits his pants, lunges at his man who sidesteps him and drops Green for a loss.

3. Green again runs left from shotgun formation, forced outside when AJ Williams gets pushed into backfield.  Rest of OL does its job.  Gain of 3 or so.

4. Smith for 15 running out of the I.  Cole and Mags flush their guys inside opening huge hole.

5. Smith out of I for 4.  Everyone hits their assignment, Miller correctly leaves double team to attack MLB but whiffs.

6. Smith from pistol, Mags gets pushed back throwing off play.  Smith still gets 4 but again, one guy out of five not doing his job.

7. 3rd and 1, Smith from I, power run gains 3 off RG.  Miller and Joey B get no push.

8. Green single back, gains a yard off RT, Kalis in game and pancakes his guy on first play in, RT Braden and TE Williams double team defender, then both abandon doubleteam and that guy makes tackle.

9. Green from shotgun gains 19, shows good burst once in the hole.  Williams and Chesson key to the run as both sealed the outside.

10. Green again from shotgun gains 6, should have been more but Mags a bit slow pulling from LG.  Backside pursuit b/c Williams doesn't hold block long enough and b/c Kalis appears to step on someone's foot and faceplants before even touching anyone.  (Next play is the sack Cole gives up and one after that is draw play on 3rd and 12 with Kalis getting beat inside.  Didn't realize until rewatching game now how big that gain of only 6 was when play should have gone for much more.)

11. Green still in (3rd drive for him, Smith only had 1), running from I, Miller gets pushed back in middle, Kerridge has no idea where to go, Green follows him and loses 3.  Play had no chance once middle of OL gets pushed back.  Drive ends a couple plays later with midded FG

12. Green in again for 4th drive out of 5, single back set, Williams serves as lead blocker, Miller gets inside his guy nicely on zone block, sealing it for Mags then Miller moves to second level, sealing off the LB.  Braden, Kalis, Williams open up right side and Norfleet blocking downfield.  Miller was incredible on this play.  Beautifully done.  Green for 62 and if he looks to his left as DB is pursuing, a stiff arm may have allowed him to get into the end zone for 82 yard TD.  But can't say enough about Miller on that play, and I'm most certainly not his biggest fan.

13. Smith from shotgun formation (his second drive of game comes with 2:17 to go in 1st half), runs stretch play to left.  Braden seals backside, Kalis pulls nicely, Williams forces his guy insde, two guys coming at Smith, Kalis blocks inside guy, Smith follows him (great vision), Mags is 8 yards downfield blocking, Chesson mauling the DB, Smith gets 61.  Great pull by Kalis, seal by Mags, and downfield blocking by Chesson.  Wish Smith had more of a burst when that hole opened up.

14. Smith from shotgun, 12 yard TD run (2 play drive), Braden and Cole get great push allowing both guards to attack second level of defense, Kalis and Mags destroy LB and DB, Kalis and his man get into end zone with Smith.  End of 1st half

15. Green single back from pistol, Miller, Kalis, and Mags upen up huge hole for Green who isn't touched until he's 8 yards downfield.  He gets 9 but is standing way too upright when DB cuts out his legs.

16. Green single back on 2nd and 1 against 5 man front on 2nd and short, Braden and Kalis seal, Miller's guy pushes him into hole and Green runs right into Kalis' man for no gain.

17. 3rd and 1 from I formation, Kalis and Braden push their guys inside, Heitzmann seals it nicely, Kerridge picks up blitz from outside, Green good acceleration into the hole, sees cutback lane and hits it, Miller running downfield blocking with him.  Ball snapped at 34 yard line, Green not touched until the 10 and he really does lack that breakaway speed.

18. 1st and Goal from 5, broken I, Cole misses on cut block, his guy makes tackle from backside pursuit.  Right side of line good, not great push, Green gets 1

19. Smith single back, run to left side, Miller seals VERY nicely and moves to second level, great push by Mags and Cole who doubleteam same guy and leave one man untouched, that guy hits Smith at 4 but he plows down to goaline and is ruled just short.

20. Green from broken I in for TD. Kalis flops on his cutblock, two guys end up in the gap, Green plows through them both for TD.

21. Smith from pistol, runs left, Joey B back in game, adequate seal on backside, Cole great push, Mags and Braden do their job, Smith makes guy miss, shows great vision, runs behind Cole for 13 yard TD.

22. Morris in game, Green from pistol, Kalis back in at RG, entire OL bunches up in middle, Khalid Hill seals from left, Green shows nice vision and cuts back left behind Hill, outruns outside rush, 6 yards downfield shows good  burst, hit at 48 yard line and falls forward for 5 more yards.  Spoiler alert: This is the play that convinces me of the RB situation.

23. Green single back, runs right for no gain (looked tired after previous physical run), Miller and Mags stand up their guys, Green misses obvious cutback lane and gets stuffed when 8-10 yards were there.  Gets up, and frustrated, pushes defender (has to be b/c he realized he ran the wrong way - which happens in a zone blocking scheme)

Conclusions:

1. The WRs blocked REALLY well.  Incredibly well.

2. Kalis is ahead of Joey B.  No question.  No doubt.  He wasn't perfect yesterday, but was CLEARLY the superior guard.

3. I responded to the starting OL question with Cole-Mags-Glasgow-Kalis-Braden.  But after watching Miller more closely, two undeniable observations.  1) When Miller has to powerblock or iso block on the guy lined up over him, he struggles mightily; just doesn't have the size and strength.  2) When Miller checks or chucks the guy over him and moves down the line laterally, he seals VERY well, SHOCKINGLY well.  I am stunned right now by this observation!  The problem will be for coaches to find ways to get Miller away from DLs who will try to beat his ass b/c if they attack him straight up, it's not tough for them to do.

4. Cole is very technically sound, but he HAS to get bigger/stronger.  Noticeably undersized.  If I'm going to change the OL when Glasgow comes back, I'm thinking Glasgow at LG and Mags at LT.  Miller played better than Cole yesterday.

5. And finally, Derrick Green is my feature back.  His vision isn't as good as Smith's, but it's passable, and he's just better with the ball.  If there's a game where the OL reverts to last year's form, Smith gets more carries because he'll find seams and get a couple yards here and there, or if a special circumstance necessitates Smith, he's good enough to help the team, but I go into the coming weeks anticipating that Green gets 20-25 carries with Smith getting 8-12.

Green is superior to Smith....but he leaves a lot of yards on the field at the end of longer runs. He easily left ten yds in that long run at 5 min left of the second, due to unawareness of the pursuer to his left. And Damien harris and his lifelong fandom might be feeling chummy right now...his skills are ideal for this O. Good choice Weber!!!

I like this writeup.  You saw a lot more than I did, and explained it very clearly.  Your conclusions seem very evidence-based; that's rare in college analysis.  Thanks for doing this.

Excellent post. I believe we have a nice 1-2 punch at running back. I think both Green and Smith have their faults, but both compliment each other well.

Im hoping the line improves each game, which I think it will. I also agree that Miller just doesnt have it. The coaches rave about him, which makes me think Glasgow might not take over the center duties against ND. I believe Kalis performed well yesterday, and will keep that RG spot. The question for me is, where will Glasgow end up?

It's interesting you say Miller doesn't have it based on this OP. The OP did state he is not Miller's biggest fan but did praise him for some outstanding plays throughout the game. Maybe there's a way to scheme around his shortcomings of strength and size. Ideally you want somebody strong and smart at center but personally I might take smart over strong if the difference isn't very large. I guess last year Miller looked like an adequate option at first but after four games his strength became an issue so maybe this year after the Utah game we'll know more. If we make necessary changes once after the non-conference season and then keep the lineup largely unchanged barring injury throughout the Big Ten season maybe we'll be fine? Thanks for doing this as it was detailed and really let me see where each OLineman did well and where they could have played better.

Nice write up.....agree with Miller, any type of power blocking for him could be a problem. Glasgow is interesting to where they put him. According to reports Cole has been the main guy at LT getting the reps and has done well.

At this point do you change up before ND or do you go into it with the same starting OL and see where you put Glasgow is someone struggles?

I just cant imagine they go into the ND game and have their best OL sitting for that game in Glasgow. They gotta put him somewhere.

I like Glasgow at RG, but continue to be convinced that we are better THIS year with Mags at LT. It's not a question of skill, it's all about physics. Cole doesn't have the mass to handle the better lines this year.

Next year, when he's put on 20 lbs of muscle is a whole different story...

I kind of like the idea of having Glasgow and Kalis at LG/RG. Two big, physical guards to help the run game. I'm just worried that Cole and Mags won't have the strength to effectively run on the left side of the line. Teams might start loading up on the right side. I think we'd be more balanced with two big guards, and I assume Mags is a bit stronger than Cole. Regarding the center, I think Miller will do well enough. Also, we were in shotgun/pistol a lot yesterday, and Miller is better at shotgun snaps.

Thanks for taking the time to do this - very interesting.  I can't wait for the UFR this week, also.

Note to Michigan staff:  can we make centers wear 50-59, guards wear 60-69, and tackles wear 70-79, please?  I was thrown off completely by seeing a 52 out wide LOL

Here's the question, does Isaac have that breakaway speed that Green/Smith are lacking? If so, he could very well be our most complete back next season and take the starting spot. It's crazy to me how much frickin' talent we have at RB.

Great post, kudos to you sir. I'm loving this two headed monster rushing attack. Just imagine how fearsome this becomes next year with Ty, THREE HEADED RUNNING BACK MONSTER!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I loved what I saw from both Green and Smith but both seemed to lack that extra gear needed to break it big.  They reach that top end speed fairly quickly which is great going through the 2nd level but they both ran out of gas on a couple of their big runs.  They both also looked eerily similar when they flashed the stat lines mid 3rd quarter, thought I was too drunk but my drinking buddies said the same thing.

If you don't have that level of speed then you can make up for it with technique and I am confident that both Green and Smith are quick studies. If we end up having problems with the run game this year it won't be due to these guys.

It's so hard to predict what to do with Glasgow because none of us really know what is talent level is compared to Miller right now, since by all accounts Glasgow lost the position battle to him fair and square before the start of the season.

That being said, I rewatched the first half of the game last night, paying specific attention to Cole and Magnuson. Mags was great and did exactly what he needed to the entire time although I didn't think he looked comfortable pulling. Cole also was more than adequate in both the run and pass game, but did lack the strength you'd like to see. That is to be expected. The few times I watched Braden he looked great.

In conclusion, start Cole-Mags-Miller-Kalis-Braden. If Cole struggles to run block or looks like he's getting exposed by ND in the passing game, put Glasgow in for Mags and shift Mags to LT. If Miller struggles, just plug Glasgow in and you have your line for the rest of the year.

thread and an offseason thread. Great analysis. Kalis looks like his back no longer bothers him, the wide receivers really like to get physical and block the hell out of people and Braden is a really large man.

I think Mags goes back to LT with Glasgow coming back. As great as Hoke has talked about Cole, I believe he was starting because he was the best option once Glasgow was suspended for the opening game. Had Mags not gotten hurt in spring ball and Glasgow not been suspended, the starters would have been Mags, Glasgow, Miller, Kalis and Braden. Cole would have been on the two deep tho I believe.

I'm liking Smith better than Green. Better vision. Breaks more arm tackles. Both aren't outrunning the defense and that is fine. But zone running needs good to great vision. Green seems to back behind in that department right now.

I agree about Smith over Green, for now.  That one run when Green was trucking down the field, I thought he could've gotten more yards if he'd stiff-armed that guy coming from his left.  (But then again, he was getting attacked on the right too).

When Smith had his first big run, I could literally see his helmet moving from side to side trying to ID anyone becoming a threat.

Top-end speed needs to increase on both of these guys, but I'll take massive chunky runs all day, every day, because the root cause of them is awesome assignment blocking.

One other point I'd like to make based on your analysis: if the receivers truly are mountain goat blockers incarnate then we should really avoid two+ tight end formations. I'm a little concerned that Funchess was the only one catching TDs but it's not like he was the only one catching passes. If they truly bring that blocking dimension that our offense desperately needs they need to see the field even if their hands are slabs of concrete, which I don't think is correct just trying to demonstrate the need for blocking guys. I did see some positive mentions of AJ Williams and it will be interesting to see if he has improved, at least he is a willing blocker and I give him full marks for that attitude. If he hasn't improved that much then get a slot on the field to spread it out a little and make it easier for our big guys.

What do you think of the following formation (excluding OL)? Two wide receivers (Funchess and Darboh), one running back (I think at this point both starters are good fits and are similar so insert your preference), one slot receiver (I know the MgoFavorite is Fleetwood but whoever is better between him and Canteen should play), and one tight end (ideally Butt). Wouldn't this be one of the better formations and shouldn't it be run like 50 percent of the time? As we proved last year running out 80 different formations doesn't do squat if there is one play run out of each formation. Anyway I'm just spitballing and appreciate your response and your, Space Cayote, and other very knowledgebe football posters' insights.

I don't pay enough attention, nor would I know what I'm looking for in terms of specifically how the O-Line looked, but it looked like it got better as the game went on. I thought Cole performed pretty well as a true freshman at LT, but have to keep in mind the level of competition. He'll get a real test against what should be at least a decent Irish defense on the road next week.

I really don't know how much changing things up I'd do even with Glasgow coming back. He might be a better option than Miller, since I know Miller is undersized, but I'm just hoping Nuss doesn't want to change things up too much unless it's clearly the better option. Still, I have faith in Nuss. He really seems like he's got the ability to make the right adjustments to put us in a position to win.

I thought both Green and a Smith looked good, but both seem to lack the real top-end speed to be a true home run threat. Green seemed to get caught from behind several times, and Smith doesn't look like he has the world's greatest stride. Keeps his legs really close together. Still, both looked very good yesterday, and as long as the O-Line continues to improve week to week, they should continue to do well together. And then, of course, we've got Isaac waiting in the wings next year. Its eerie to think how much talent we've got in the backfield right now.

If the plan is to put Glasgow at LG why would they put Mags there to begin with? I would think they would start him at LT and Cole/Bosch at LG, and Glasgow replaces them. I think the left side is set.

I agree on Miller - if he has help on a scoop block on down lineman, he can seal that man well or move off to the LB.  Head-up drive blocking, he's still getting overpowered.  It's possible that he's better at the line calls than Glasgow though, b/c hat-on-a-hat was much better this game.

Disagree on Cole.  Sure he needs to get stronger, but he's not getting shoved around.  I like leaving him there and letting him get better.

I rewatched the game in slo mo late last night and saw a lot of what you did. I think Miller did a little better than you described. I only saw one or two plays where he got straight up beat, mostly it was that he stalemated the NT and didn't get push when asked to do it alone. He was quite adept at passing the NT off and moving to the next level. He had this uppercut technique that was very effective at sealing the guy off as he ran by him so his guard combo buddy could swoop in and take over. It'd be hard to pull him for Glasgow from just this game performance I think, Glasgow will have to clearly beat him in practice.

Kalis played fewer snaps than I thought. Really just the 2nd quarter. Joey B started and then came back in for much of the second half. I'm guessing Kalis is still either not 100% or they're just being really careful with him. Glasgow probably goes here until Kalis gets totally healthy. Kalis was probably our best run blocker, so it's a shame to pull him, but probably the right decision long term if it means having him healthy the rest of the season.

I think Cole sticks where he is. I was a little overwhelmed on run plays but did ok. The other side of the coin is pass protection and he did pretty well there, the one sack excepted. All the noise from the coaches seem to point to him being the long term solution there.

It looked like a lot of 6-man fronts to me (do they play a 4-2-5 base D?), with safeties walking up to be a seventh man.  Undersized at several positions though, so sometimes hard to tell LB from safety.

This may be the wonderful world of Funchess we're living in though, b/c every time I saw a 6-man front and wondered WTF, I saw the clear double team of Funchess outside.

The OL was able to get in front of the defenders, which is a great start.  Hat-on-a-hat.  But better/bigger defenders are going to knock some of those pulling lineman back into the hole (or knock them down), rather than absorb the block or be walled off.  On too many plays our guys are playing with straight backs and not enough bend.

But lots to be encouraged about, obviously.  As everyone is saying, if you put more in the box, Nuss will take the bubble or other free yards in the air.

that Michigan was able to break some runs, but App State is quite possibly the worst and most undersized team we play this year.  I really need to see a lot more against better teams.

On big plays I tend to watch the other teams LB's and safeties and many cases App State's safety was nowhere to be found and often enough an LB was sucked in the wrong direction.  Either Michigan gave great movement to get players out of position or App State's safety and LB play was just awful.  It was nice to see Michigan take advantage of that with some really excellent, powerful running.

I did like that the oline blocking schemes seemed to be an actual plan and not the helter skelter crap we saw last year.

Encouraging but we have a long way to go to say we've fixed anything.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. These 5 at least deserve another shot to prove that this week was not a fluke, 300+ rushing yards and keeping Gardner upright gets them the start at ND.
